The FTAA IMC video collective, San Diego Indymedia and Voz Alta present the premiere of:
THE MIAMI MODEL. The film will be screened on August 25th, 2004 at 7pm at Voz Alta on 1544 Broadway.
In November 2003, trade ministers from 34 countries met in Miami, Florida, to negotiate the Free Trade Area of the Americas (FTAA).
The FTAA is the expansion of the North American Free Trade Agreement (NAFTA) to every country in Central America, South America and the Caribbean, except Cuba. In the US, Canada, and Mexico, the "free trade" policies of NAFTA have led to greater pollution, greater unemployment, and greater poverty. The FTAA only promises to make this situation worse, threatening to extend NAFTA's free trade zone, while privatizing public services like health care, education, media, and water.
To show their opposition to the FTAA, thousands of union members, environmentalists, feminists, anarchists, students, farm workers, media activists, and human rights activists also gathered in Miami.
What happened there was a disturbing example of the state of free speech under a wartime president. Among protestors, it has inspired a new phrase to describe the ruthless crushing of protests - "The Miami Model." Protestors were attacked with rubber bullets, pepper spray, electric tazer guns, and shock batons, all coordinated by the new United States Department of Homeland Security, and paid for by an $8.5 million line item within the $87 billion appropriation for the Iraq war. Youths from poor Miami neighborhoods were told they could attack and rob protestors with impunity. A compliant local media embedded reporters with the riot police and played down images of police violence, even while the brutality spiraled out of control.
The ftaaaimc.org video collective shot over a hundred hours of video in Miami, and they have created an unflinching documentary that exposes what really happened there.
THE MIAMI MODEL also showcases the issues that drove the protestors to Miami, and the alternative models of grassroots resistance, creative action sustainable development, and solidarity that they came to promote.
THE MIAMI MODEL is available for screenings now, with dozens of screenings scheduled across the country. At press time, it will be available for purchase on DVD for individuals and institutions. To learn more, visit www.ftaaimc.org/miamimodel.

Please Don't Feed the Trolls
Wikipedia defines an Internet Troll as: "either a person who sends messages on the Internet hoping to entice other users into angry or fruitless responses, or a message sent by such a person." San Diego IMC strives to provide both a grassroots media resource as well as a forum for people to contribute to a meaningful discussion about local issues. Please, when posting comments, be respectful of others and ignore those trying to interrupt or discourage meaningful discourse. Thank you.
