Rep. Duncan Hunter portrays the border region as a lawless area that could be breeched by terrorists daily. When he talks about the existing fence you would think it was little more than strands of barbed wire. The fence used to be barbed wire and in the 1960s Pat Nixon asked guards to clip the barbwire during the dedication of the Friendship Park at the western edge of the border so that she could walk and talk with the Mexicans.
Hunter tried to get the triple fence built in the 1990s as a way to stop immigration into the U.S. After 9-11 the focus of the fence became terrorism.
Last year the California Coastal Commission unanimously rejected the western three miles of the Border Fence due to the negative impacts it would have on the environment. The fence also has huge social impacts. What would U.S. citizens think if Canada began to build a barrier to keep people from the U.S. out? It’s embarrassing that people in this country are so afraid that they need to build a security fence around the country.
Hopefully the national prominence of this issue will bring the facts out in the open about this fence. There is no documentation that this fence is needed or that the current design will accomplish the stated goals anyway. What are people doing to stop this project?

You people should get your values right side up. Don't sacricfice the safety of America in the name of "Environment". It's a false god.
Every nation that we respect controls who goes in and out of it through its borders. Why should the United States be more foolish than that?

didn't the commies build the iron curtain to trap their own people? are we trying to keep others out or keep u.s.? citizens from escaping a government of hate-mongers? i remember being taught that we didn't do certain things because we were a free people. only the nazi's and commie's did them, is bush the grandson of hitler?

The fence has nothing to do with security and everything to do with creating the fear through the illusion of the "other" in order to foment nationalism, circumvent logic and create dependence. watch the film "the village" to get an understanding of the mythology that supports border politics.

genest et. al. we are less safe than before the "homeland security" started. the radical muslems do NOT hate our "freedoms" they hate what our government has been doing to other countrys for a hundred years. about the only proper thing "we've" done was wwII. "we've" overthrown or sponsered coups on dozens of elected governments all over the world. what wmd's in iraq? wern't any! the terror alerts? poorly run, mostly set up for political points! etc. etc.

WAKE UP...The Border has NOTHING to do with providing safety...it is merely a tool of globalization used to "trap" a cheap work force in the towns that line the Southern side of the border, where u.s. owned factories thrive! It is IMPERIALIST nations that want to bar the free movement of labor while demanding the free movement of capital! Its about increasing profits!
