The Anti-MinuteMen, No Border camp was set up in the desert scrub of Campo, just feet away from the Border Fence. From this base, anti-racists marched to the MinuteMan camps, only to find they had left to avoid the confrontation. From this spot activists intervened in press events the MinuteMen tried to have at the crest of the Pacific Crest Trail, just feet away from our campsite. People also made their presence felt to every MinuteMan car that entered the area, as our camp was just next to the main access road. Camp attendees posted their stories on San Diego Indymedia from the temporary Desert Media Center which was set up onsite.
On July 16th, the camp was joined by over 150 people from around the state and around the country. This larger group marched to the site of the planned MinuteMan meeting, only to find that it had been moved to an unknown location due to pressure. Later in the day, anti-racists and MinuteMen alike were forced out of their campsites by a brush fire. This gave the anti-racist organizers an opportunity to confront the MinuteMen at their regrouping point, the Veterans of Foreign Wars Building in Campo, for an intense face to face standoff that was only stopped by police intervention after the MinuteMen retreated into the building. Throughout the night disruption techniques were used to sabotage the MinuteMan patrols, which were met with threats that they would shoot. The camp continued until Monday and actions will continue day and night until the MinuteMen leave Campo. On Sunday night the corporate media reported that the MinuteMen had given up after only one day, but later corrected that statement.

I think using the term racist in the context of this coverage is not appropriate. Using this classification too often takes away from its importance. Using the term Nazi all the time has the same effect.
I doubt if all the undocumented border agents are racist. They are probably very concerned in their own mind about the open border. Efforts should be used to change existing rules for longer work visas, easier citizenship for persons who have proven themselves a good citizen, etc.
I think just getting mad at a few minutemen will not solve the problem, nor will the minutemen solve the illegal flow of immigration. I think it is good that both sides are bringing this issue to the forefront, maybe americans will finally admit that we rely heavily on non-citizens to work here. Under that premise they should also recognize the need for healthcare for those persons working here. Dealing with that problem would solve the whole "they cause all the hospitals to go bankrupt" situation.

Part of our job as organizers is to call this what it is: racist violence.
The coalition against the minutemen is very clear that they are opposing racist violence. We are reporting on the organizing efforts of this coalition.
Patrolling the border with guns, forcing any brown people found to lie on the floor at gunpoint, calling people "illegals", accusing them of "bringing disease" is racist violence.
The next time someone forces you to lie on the floor at gunpoint, as the minutemen did in AZ and vigilantes have done here in SD for a long time, you tell me if you think it's violent. But it won't happen to you, because you're not brown. So, it's racist.
There are numerous well documented cases of white supremacists flocking to the MinuteMen project, as well as ties between Jim Gilchrist and known hate groups. They are racist. We're not calling them nazis, as that would dilute the term. We're calling them what they are: racists.

The whole MinuteMen project is about fomenting racist ideology and hate. They claim to be simply enforcing the law, but the law is racist too, so they can easily make that claim. Everything done in Nazi germany was legal in germany too.
If you don't think the law is racist, ask yourself why 3,500 people have died crossing the border. Why doesn't anyone care about that number? Why isn't the law changed to stop the deaths? What if 3,500 white americans were killed trying to cross the fence? What then? Ask yourself why blacks and latinos are disproportionately jailed in this country. There are tons of examples of institutionalized racism.

i highly doubt that real "terrorists" are going to be using gaps in the wall to get into the united states. it's not practical, and they're probably a little too smart for that.

The word illegal means not legal. If you enter the country illegally, then you are an illegal. We didn't ask for them to come. Mexico's economy sent them here. We accomodate them with employers willing to look the other way. If the employers would stop, then most of the jobs that would be available would be picking in the fields.
When I was young, too far back for me, the lowly jobs were held by young people just looking for work, not a career.

Just because some yahoos have some ill perceived notion that standing around the border will solve the immigration problems does not make them racist. Is it possible that some of those involved are racist, of course. My point is if the racist term is always thrown around when we are technically discussing national issues degrades the argument. I understand the human compassion towards people in need, it sucks when people die because certain laws and rules need to be adjusted for current needs.(context- crossing the desert, not at gunpoint so do not go there)
The reality is we use non citizens for cheap labor. We cannot allow everybody to cross the border and become a citizen either. The solution sounds easy but it is not, can it be fixed?, yes.
Even if the racist accusations are true, using the racist accusation degrades the validity of the arguement primarily in the eyes of those whose opinion you are trying to sway.
Fight the injustice via legal means, take the moral high ground by changing policy in a realistic manner without using what most on the "right" will refer to as typical "leftist","socialist", "commie" tactics.

I wrote numerous articles about them months before their action as well did our local bi-lingual spanish/english news paper Dos Mundos in KC Missouri in an effort to raise awareness and subvert them before they got off the ground. I failed in the second respect. As I investigated I found a good portion of the recruits came from my state (hundreds) and the recrutment action started after the Aryan Nations attempted to move to our city and open and "infoshop" in the middle of our large latino community. They were quickly run out by a coalition of groups but they left their old national director John Juba behind as a free agent for facism. Shortly thereafter the National Socialist Party had their annual national meeting here and then a Happy Birthday Hittler party. Throughout their (NSP and AN) activity they had been recruiting heavily for this at local gun and knife shows, auto shows and through the right wing militia movement. The Arizona Tumbleweed news paper is directly affiliated with the Minutemen and their parent organization Civil Homeland Defense ( http://www.civilhomelanddefense.us/index.htm *web site now defunct)and had links to the Aryan Nations and other spin offs as well as shared membership. They are absolutely racist...and Fascist in the true sense of the words. Just becuase the membership has grown to encompass reactionary rightwingers not directly associated with any Nazi or Racist groups doesn't absolve them of it nor does it change the objective or motives of the leadership and directors. They are still Nazis and their goal is a Nazi one.

To be perfectly honest, I'm not just sick of Illegal Immigration. I'm sick of LEGAL immigration too! And not just the Mexicans and Canadians. I'm tired of people from Ohio, Iowa, Missouri and don’t get me started about immigrants from the southern states. In my home town, we’ve worked hard to bring our economy around and if it weren’t for all the outsiders who move in, we’d be living very nicely thank you. I can’t wait till I can expect border controls all around Illinois to keep you dirty people out. The last thing I need is for anyone from Arizona showing up in my mall working at the café or fast food joint when that job could be going to an honest Illinoisan.

Even if it can be proven that the sole purpose of the "minutemen" is a racist agenda do not go that route. Claiming Racism will not help, it will be used against you. You can get better results by ensuring public policy changes and that silly statements like 'they all come here to sell drugs' are ridiculous.
It does not matter how you feel about borders, current laws are in place and must be followed. Use the facts, Mexicans, Nicaraguans, El Salvadorans, etc. come here to work and also sustain economies, they are integral in that region as well as ours at least under current conditions.

In defense of the San Diego border group whatever they are called, the website made it clear not to detain anyone, they also make it clear they are not officially racist, take it as a grain of salt but that holds up in court. The photos showed vigilantes with assault rifles detaining "illegals", I think that is illegal, did they turn them over to the authorities? did they beat them up? I do not think they are the same guys that are in San Diego on this website. Nice photo website however.
I agree that while not racist in the literal sense, government policy and public understanding/sentiment lean towards racism/religious racism as a whole. When I see suicide and regular bombings occur daily in for example IRAQ and that gets little coverage and no concern from the general population I get perplexed why we should be so shocked when some bombings occur in London. Far fewer British citizens have been killed or maimed due to terrorists. We have embraced the IRAQI government as a mantlepiece to show the world how we promote democracy, therefore we should support and feel the same sorrow for those innocents that die daily in IRAQ as those in Britain or Spain.

Take a step back, guys. First of all, (wait for yours, steve) just because their "agenda" may or may not be primarily racist, or their general statement such, does not mean that there are not racial issues involved. This is a perfect cover for them because (this is for you steve)there are laws in place that are being broken and people out there who have completely non-racial objections to it. So there is unfortunately a problem with running around screaming "Racist!" as alot of groups are so inclined to do IF they would hope to "sway the public", or whathaveyou. Now if they're just making the usual statement "hey we're here and we're pissed and we're not leaving until we disrupt something" then fine. But it's only a disruption. No one is more enlightened for it. Dig up the dirt and inform the public of these underlying issues and ties, but do it an educated and informative manner instead of throwing around meaningless terms that the public has heard enough of to know how to ignore by now.
I believe in the anti-racist cause in action here, but I also believe those who said that calling them out as racists like this is harming their cause more than helping it. Try to appear mature and informed and people will consider your stance. I know it takes all of the fun out of it, but this isn't for fun, is it? I am a Mexican American and I agree that the U.S. Mexican border should be closed completely.
Mexico is the United State's largest importer which in 2004 represented approximately $110,775,285,000 dollars (per foreign trade statistics by the U.S. Census Bureau) in U.S. exports. (Can borderwatchers even count that high?) These statistics do not include Mexican Small business imports where a U.S. Customs broker is not required (Small business is the majority of business in Mexico.)
Per the United States Internal Revenue Service in a report published on April 22, 2003, 80% of “Illegal immigrants” as white americans complain, work with fraudulent social security cards. So they are paying Federal and State taxes, and social security into a system that they will never receive a tax refund or obtain disability or retirement benefits from, pouring BILLIONS of dollars into the federal and state coffers, (PURE PROFIT !!!) and another estimated $300 million alone paid by immigrants who apply for Individual Taxpayer Identification Numbers (ITIN).
“Illegal Immigrants” pay high rents, (which I assume their "AMERICAN" landlord is paying the property taxes), buy food, gas, alcohol, cigarettes which are high state tax items. “illegal Immigrants nationally represent 9% of the nation’s economy, pouring more than $1.3 trillion dollars annually into the nation’s economy in purchases. Mexican Nationals who cross the border as tourists for shopping purposes spend approximately another $ 100 Billion (According to the San Diego – Tijuana Economic Review Board, $12 billion alone in the San Diego Area)
I also agree that every Mexican immigrant should be sent back to Mexico and let the “American” people pick their own food, clean up their own house, cook for themselves, cut and clean their own yard, wash their own cars, build their own houses and do every other job that for the last 250 years they have been too lazy to do. The average “American” feels they are above that and throughout history have always used slave and low cost labor to do these tedious labors for them.
The median age of the white American is 45 years old while the median age for the Mexican is 19 years old. the average white American will be retiring in ten to fifteen years. Who will do the work in 20 years? If Mexicans are not received and trained within the next fifteen years the entire economy may collapse. Why do you think that so many American companies send their work to be done in Mexico? One; because of the outrageous cost of labor, two; lack of capable, qualified and willing workers. Americans are pricing themselves out of the competitive market.
So, yes I agree that the "illegal immigrants" should leave back to Mexico and the border should be completely closed! If any single one of the aforementioned actions were to occur, the American economy would be devastated within two weeks and collapse within months!!! Then maybe these racist "Americans" will open their eyes when they are paying $8 a pound for tomatoes because no “American” will pick the crops for under $17 an hour, much less in California where a person cannot even live on $17 an hour. The only way to regain prosperity will be to import from Mexico and Latin America thereby increasing OUR prosperity as we laugh all the way to “Banamex.”

As a "libertarian socialist, George Orwell was an anarchist sympathizer, just like many of the global justice demonstrators protesting the minutemen racist nationalists. Libertarian socialists and anarchists are against left-wing and right-wing police states. If you did not pick that up in 1984, read "A Homage to Catalonia" about Orwell joining the anarchists in fighting against the Fascists in Spain. He became disillusioned with the state socialists, but remained committed to a "libertarian socialism" that fits along side such great thinkers as Noam Chomsky and Howard Zinn - between the philosophies of anarchism and social democracy.
Another racist on the "Save Our State" website quotes Mark Twain, "In the beginning of a change, the Patriot is a scarce man, Brave, Hated and Scorned. When his cause succeeds however, the TIMID join him, for then it costs NOTHING to be a Patriot."
I doubt this racist realises the context of that Mark Twain quote. Mark Twain also said, "Patriotism is supporting your country all the time, and your government when it deserves it." and "The citizen who sees his society's democratic clothes being worn out and does not cry out is not a patriot but a traitor."
Mark Twain was pasionately anti-war, "The loud little handful will shout for war. However, what is more tragic about the "patriot" quoting Mark Twain is that Twain, the real Samuel Clemens, led the Anti-Imperialist League as its vice president from 1901 to 1910. Even more tragic is that many of these folk are Republicans. During the Mexican-American War, Abraham Lincoln, then a young Congressman, and Ulysses S. Grant, the future victorious Civil War commander and US President, believed that the invasion of Mexico was not justified.
It was at this time that Henry David Thoreau refused to pay his taxes to support this unjust invasion of Mexico while Abraham Lincoln stood in opposition to President Polk's scheme in Congress.

1. The land on which we all stand is Indian land. Period. There is no treaty with some Indigenous nations, and the rest were forced into signing a treaty at gun point. This is historical FACT that can and is documented.

From what Ive read about the Minuteman project, their main task is not to stop illegal immagration all by themselves, its to show that it can be done and to get the Bush administration to get off its ass and do something about the problem. Violent racists, Im sure there are some sprinkled in there, unfortunately, and it should be the Minuteman Projects coordinators that filter these bastards out.
Illegal immigration is a problem and its something the current administration needs to look at. They wont, however, because big business relies on illegals to keep their prices down and their "bonus packages" up. Bush is all about big business and the economy and it will take a considerable uproar to get him to even blink at it. Whenever possible we should not let our discourse be enslaved to the legal versus illegal framework of liberalism. Hiding behind laws is convenient for some, but laws are not the issue here.
If people have a genuine concern for migrant peoples' discontent and plight then they should fight against the neoliberal economic policies that have ravished both the Mexican and American economies, and significantly increased the need for Mexican migration. The widespread unquestioned assumption that migration is a problem is the wrong place to begin a conversation and usually betrays some ignorant and shitty beliefs about migration and migrant peoples.
steve is kind of right that reducing the issue to only race oversimplifies the issue. Having talked to these idiots (in Campo) it is clear that most of them are born again christians fighting the war on terrorism, a war and a politics based on the "clash of civilizations" thesis of Samuel Huntington. Stand up to the Minutemen, Do what you feel is right. I support that action 100 percent. But heres the but,, throwing terms like "racist" and "nazi" just make you look silly and sound stupid. Like them or not, the Minutemen are not racist, they come in all colors and stand up for national borders just as we stand up for not having borders. The real solution in this is to creat diologue with the Minutemen and try to find common ground. Anything else , such as calling them names is useless and counter productive. Tho, I know there are many on BOTH sides filled with hate, we still nedd to reach out.

Acording to CIA/FBI intel, Al Qaeda member have ALREADY crossed the border coming in through Mexico, and at least two suitcase size, man-portable nuclear weapons are in the US in their hands.
How exactly is it impractical? All they have to do is drive up to the border and step across. The best place to do this is in AZ where there is little to no fence at all for most of the line.
You think we changed our story about what we were trying to stop? We were trying to stop all of the above. Drug smuggling, illegal crossings, whatever illegally crosses our borders, we try to do our best to help the Border Patrol stop it.
Whether they be Mexican, French, African, Chinese, Canadian, whatever, we'll do our best to first of all deterr them from crossing, and secondly to assist the Border Patrol in apprehending them after they've made an illegal crossing.
This is not about race.
The Berlin wall was in the middle of a city, this border is in the middle of the desert. Instead of fleeing Mexico to work in America and insist that we accomodate their language & specific needs, perhaps those who cross illegally should go back to Mexico and take back their own home country for themselves and their families, because it belongs to them, it does not belong to Vincente Fox and his thugs.
America takes anyone in through it's legal immigration process, there is no descrimination. If you feel the legal immigration process is too slow or expensive, lobby your lawmakers, change the process through democracy.
The government should be afraid of the people, not the people afraid of the government.

I don't believe the minutemen to be a racist organization. although certain racist people or groups may support the project doesn't make their motives racist. I'm sure many racists support a non-controversial cause or two that you may belive in, does sharing that common belief make you a racist also? There is also the assumption that all these "poor" people are trying to do is come to America to make a better life for themselves. This may be true in many cases, but you ignore the strain they put on communities thru all of the aid and support they require i.e welfare and schools. What about those illegals who do nothing more that drain the system? Perhaps you haven't heard the statistics of 30% of federal inmates being deportable illegal aliens. I'm not aginst immigration, I'm asking that if you want to come to America do it legally. I don't think its to much to ask an immigrant to sign the guest book on the way in to our country.

If you go back to your history just a few generations you will find that the flood of immigrants that came from eastern Europe were NOT called Illegal immigrants. WHY NOT? You'll find that instead of being confronted by border patrol and "minute men" they were simply screened for disease and then simply processed thru the gates of Ellis Island, a small immigration station that served from 1892 to 1954. Where it allowed over 22 million people from Europe to come to this country for the same reasons the immigrants of today cross our southern border, a better life. Yet why don't these immigrants of today have an "Ellis Island" of their own? SIMPLE RACISM! THAT'S WHY! As much as many people will deny it and use the excuse TERRORISM to HIDE it, deep inside them, it's what drives them to use these immigrants as scapegoats and blame them for our nations ills. Even BEFORE 9/11 they've been pushing to militarize the border! Don't let them fool you and tell you it's for "National Security." It seems like the darker and less assimilable the new immigrants get the more AMERICA PANICS!!
It frustrates me to see how the media is orchestrating their scare tactics against the American public and how we're just chewing it all up, believing that these simple, economic immigrants are terrorist! Ridiculous! Don't you see, if the federal gov't really believed that terrorist were coming thru the border they would BE AT THE BORDER and NOT IN IRAQ! But our ever-so opportunistic gov't only allows immigrants to come here because AMERICA NEEDS CHEAP LABOR!! WAKE UP!!
