The Voz Alta Project has been operating in downtown San Diego since 2002
as a space for "promoting community empowerment and social change
through cross-cultural and multi-disciplinary art forms.". It is
operated by a Chicana/o collective as a community space fostering
cultural awareness in San Diego. Our ongoing work with Voz Alta
demonstrates our commitment to working with the Chicano and Mexican
community in San Diego, who are so underrepresented and misrepresented
in the media here.
In addition, this new agreement places Indymedia squarely in the battle
for downtown San Diego. Many downtown spaces have already been
threatened with eminent domain and demolition in the gentrification
plan to remove people of color, low-income people and homeless people
from downtown. We are opposed to these plans to gentrify downtown San
Diego, turning it into a ballpark centered Disneyland where human rights
and affordable housing are not a concern, where human life is secondary
to property values.
To make this space a success, though, we need help from the community.
If you care about independent media, about having media that is not
owned and run by rich white men, about having media that doesn't hold
stories that the President doesn't like for a year, then we need your help.
In the coming weeks and months, we will need volunteers to help setup
the space and help maintain it. We are hoping to keep regular gallery
hours, for which we will also need volunteers. Lastly, we need donations
for media making equipment as well as supplies. We need both laptops,
computers and monitors, but also toilet paper, paper towels, chairs and
rolling computer carts.
If you can donate equipment, please email imc-sd [at] lists d-t

In taking on this commitment of securing a space for the production of
independent media in San Diego, we are now in need of finding and
securing long term financial support from the community. If any one has
ideas, suggestions, or resources to offer - please contact the SDIMC
immediately at imc-sd [at] lists d0t indymedia d0t org. Thank you for
It is our hope that by working together, forming links, relationships
and friendships, we can continue to change this city and this world into
one where people tell their own stories.
Please Don't Feed the Trolls|
Wikipedia defines an Internet Troll as: "either a person who sends messages on the Internet hoping to entice other users into angry or fruitless responses, or a message sent by such a person." San Diego IMC strives to provide both a grassroots media resource as well as a forum for people to contribute to a meaningful discussion about local issues. Please, when posting comments, be respectful of others and ignore those trying to interrupt or discourage meaningful discourse. Thank you.
