The Minutemen, the Citizens' Brigade, and other related groups are swarming day labor sites through out San Diego County, and they've become increasingly aggressive. They harass and abuse workers, both physically and verbally, chase away employers, harass customers who patronize businesses near the day labor sites, and threaten bystanders. Here are photos of 10 of the 20+ Minutemen and Minutewomen who frequent the day labor site near Home Depot on Fairmount Avenue (San Diego). Minutemen are at the site every Saturday and Sunday.

Please Don't Feed the Trolls

Wikipedia defines an Internet Troll as: "either a person who sends messages on the Internet hoping to entice other users into angry or fruitless responses, or a message sent by such a person." San Diego IMC strives to provide both a grassroots media resource as well as a forum for people to contribute to a meaningful discussion about local issues. Please, when posting comments, be respectful of others and ignore those trying to interrupt or discourage meaningful discourse. Thank you.

Good Question

06.08.2006 05:35

Very good question. Unfortunately, there isn't an easy answer. I take my camera to document improprieties--and there are plenty--but I'm not certain that large counter-demonstrations at the labor sites would benefit the workers. Employers already shy away from the ruckus, and larger crowds might or might not help. On the other hand, the Minutemen are increasingly aggressive because they believe they're unopposed. What might help the workers most (many of whom are here legally) is a well-organized information campaign. We need to show employers and the public who the Minutemen really are, and what they do when the mainstream media aren't looking. This is my start. Ideally, employers will line up at the labor sites on weekends, letting the Minutemen know they really have no power.

Powerful scenes!

Couldn't these be turned into a documentary --- like a real-life "Grapes of Wrath"? Look at the stunning improprieties Diane has documented with her ever-present camera:

1. A heavy-set woman gives Diane the finger!

2. A guy named Tony reveals his left armpit to Diane!!

3. Wilma points her camera at Diane's camera!!!

4. A guy looks ahead, holding an American flag against his right shoulder!!!!

5. A guy looks into Diane's camera!!!!!

...

6. Gabriel looks into Diane's camera!!!!!!

Yessir, even if the local U.S. attorney is too cowardly to pursue these painstakingly-documented cases, Emily Post would probably have a stroke over this concerted display of impropriety.
