Nationwide Press Release follows:

Nationwide Protests to Drive Out the Bush Regime-
OCTOBER 5-- In 152 Cities and Towns, and Growing…
No Work, No School-- MARCH

On Thursday, October 5, people will walk out of school, take off work, gather in town squares, and MARCH in cities across the country, declaring their intention to bring the Bush program to a halt.

In the past ten days, the number of cities and towns planning protests jumped from 50 to over 152. Meanwhile, the Bush administration is bolting into place an unprecedented new law which legalizes torture and severely restricts habeas corpus, the basic right to legal redress first established in England with the Magna Carta in 1215.

"Face it. The Bush regime is remaking the world, very quickly, in a fascist way and for generations to come. Denial won't help. And the Democrats aren't stopping them. But WE must. And we can. There are millions of us…" This message calling people out on October 5 is being heard nationally on Air America radio spots. Thousands also contributed to publish a full-page ad in USA Today on September 20, reading in part: "Endless wars. Torture. Katrina. Theocracy… This regime does not represent us and we will drive it out."

Thursday’s protests occur as Bush threatens a new war on Iran and the "Military Commissions Act of 2006" is approved in the Senate with bi-partisan support. Presented as a compromise, this "torture bill" legally enshrines the President's category of "enemy combatant," allows evidence obtained by torture to be admitted to trial by military tribunals, gives the President the right to interpret the Geneva Conventions, and eliminates the right of habeas corpus for those held by military commissions.

Debra Sweet, national coordinator of World Can't Wait said Tuesday, "We are at a defining moment for this country and its people. There are millions who don’t want to live in a theocratic new Rome – but we don’t have unlimited time to stop this regime. Whether we act – or fail to act – right now will impact the lives of millions all over the world for generations. We are putting this to everyone: When all other avenues of change are blocked, what do people do? Hit the streets. This is the chance we have on October 5."

The World Can’t Wait – Drive Out the Bush Regime CALL has been signed by tens of thousands of people, including SEAN PENN, GORE VIDAL, HARRY BELAFONTE, DANIEL ELLSBERG, EDWARD ASNER, MICHELLE PHILLIPS, JONATHAN KOZOL, FORMER SEN. JAMES ABOUREZK, ERICA JONG, U.S. REP. JOHN CONYERS, CRAIG MURRAY, RABBI MICHAEL LERNER, MARK CRISPIN MILLER, THOM HARTMANN, OLYMPIA DUKAKIS, JESSICA LANGE, KEVIN POWELL, MARGARET CHO, MICHAEL ERIC DYSON, CORNEL WEST, HOWARD ZINN, MARK RUFFALO, JANE FONDA, CINDY SHEEHAN, PAUL HAGGIS, and ALICE WALKER.

Check www.worldcantwait.org for continually expanding list of locations for October 5 protests. Interviews available with selected signers.

Redbaiting only helps the Right-Wing!

04.10.2006 04:39

The above sniping criticism is left in form, but right in essence and is more reminiscent of the Far Right's attacks on virtually all organized Leftist Demonstrations for the past Century than a dignified objection from a concerned leftist. In fact, this critic has put him/her-self in the same corner as Right-Wingers like David Horowitz and Bill O'Reilly who have also themselves redbaited World Cant Wait in their respective media.

The reality is that World Cant Wait is a great idea and is the only national medium and group pulling together a United Resistance to the right wing's agenda on Civil Liberties, Iraq, Womens Rights, the Environment, Science, etc...
If Communists are involved in building this resistance I say "So What!" as it is a great idea and kudos to them for helping make it happen. If the involvement of Communists in a Demonstration doesn't bother Sean Penn or Jane Fonda or Alice Walker or Daniel Ellsberg as well as thousands of other non-communists than why should it freak you out so much!

The thousands of people, including countless left-wing intellectuals and Hollywood Celebrities, who have signed on to Thursday's Demo and who have chipped in to buy $100,000 ads in papers like USA Today and the New York Times are serious about turning things around in this Country and as a result Demonstrations are going to happen in over 180 Cities and Towns around the USA and Canada on Thursday.
World Cant Wait has brought thousands of new people into motion in many small towns and areas that have not had a "Movement" in the past. (check out their WorldCantWait.org web site for the countless large and small actions that are being pulled together spontaneously around the country. There is even a couple who are going to organize a Protest on a Cruise Ship as it passes by San Diego on Thursday!! Yes, a Cruise Ship!.

For historical perspective, lots of social movements had socialists and communists in them, often coming up with great ideas as well as doing a lot of the tough day to day leg work. These movements included the fights for the 8 hour day, Unemployment Insurance, and Civil Rights Legislation.
During these historic struggles, Countless celebrities as well as millions of ordinary folks ignored the desparate Red-Baiting attempts of Right-Wingers to sabotage these forward-looking movements.
I was at the last World Cant Wait full day Action in Downtown San Diego and it was the most Democratic and open activity I have been at in a long time. There was an Open Mike set up in front of the Federal Courthouse building and everybody was encouraged to step forward to voice their opinions, Anarchists included.

October 5th should be a great day nationwide for freedom loving people everywhere and the above anarchist writer is strongly encouraged to put your scepticism aside for a few hours and to come out and find out for yourself how democratic this movement actually is as well as to be a part of history in the making!
I do hope to see you us at the Rally!

it's not red-baiting to point out the truth

04.10.2006 20:21

Anarchist's post simply points out the connection between the Revolutionary Communist Party of Bob Avakian and World Cant Wait, which is well-documented, and a link to some fairly noncontroversal criticisms of the rcp. To call this red-baiting is dishonest.

Some questions that come to mind: Why isnt World Cant Wait being upfront about its connection to RCP? Is the RCP using World Cant Wait as a covert recruitment and fundraising tool?

If the rcp wasn't so sneaky and dishonest, it's actions and projects would likely receive more support from the left.

let's be honest

On Your Own Terms: Open Letter to Activists

05.10.2006 08:22

School walkouts and protest are scheduled Oct. 5 in over a hundred cities, NYC starts 12 noon at the U.N. – March 1:30 – Union Square 4 pm

Tired of stewing in anger while "long war" and torture are normalized, working on campaigns that don't touch the highest powers and an activist culture where we tear each other down instead of pushing forward? Me too. That's why I'm getting involved in this fight and taking it to my neighbors, friends and the street on October 5. This is not a one-day fight. It's nobody's dog-and-pony show.

This letter is a personal appeal for your active involvement with World Can't Wait, on your own terms, starting now.

Momentum is building for the Oct. 5 protests, but many activists have yet to step up -- or even investigate for themselves the scope of this effort. The lull in the protest movement since the start of the war, exactly as the population has turned against this disaster is more confusing than it should be and, I'd argue, related to a passive orientation towards the elections........

Maybe you will vote, some will work on the mid-term campaigns. Some of you are active, some are rarely, a few of you have yet to volunteer in any capacity. We all have a way to engage this whole assault. World Can't Wait wants and expects participation on your own terms, with your own politics and culture, in agreement with the initiating call. Period. Anyone who says otherwise would rather you stayed home than took up this fight. We've seen where this kind of cynical passivity leads: to more to the same and worse.

Participation has spread far beyond the initiating group, and this is as they want it to be. I can say this, but coming to the forum tonight at Cooper Union is the best way to see who is actually involved, not the rumors and half-baked shit-talking that passes for debate too often. We can't let a fear of our movements' most radical (and honest) participants justify apathy, despair and disengagement. You can't let it.

Again, the genuine breadth of this movement is near unprecedented.

Cindy Sheehan, Jonathan Kozol, Suheir Hammad, Michael Eric Dyson, Alice Walker, Howard Zinn. From inside the system, Democratic lightning rods like Al Sharpton, congressional representatives such as Cynthia McKinney, John Conyers, and Major Owens have joined radicals like Mumia Abu-Jamal, Ward Churchill and Sunsara Taylor. Ralph Nader is urging people to come out. Rabbi Michael Lerner of Tikkun Magazine and the Network of Spiritual Progressives, and Medea Benjamin of CodePink have urged everyone to get involved, and to make this their own. The very army general who ran Abu Ghraib prison in Iraq has joined, as did the first State Department official to resign over Iraq and career CIA man Ray McGovern helped disrupt a Rumsfeld presentation on national TV alongside WCW activists.

Prominent signatories are one thing. The infrastructure of a successful movement is another.

Speaking directly, the range of signatories to the World Can't Wait call is broad, diverse and speaks to the unfolding moment we are in. Specifically among activists, including many receiving this email, there is considerable skepticism regarding communist involvement.

The role of the Revolutionary Communist Party is not a secret -- but despite claims to the contrary, World Can't Wait is not a "front group." This kind of accusation is not "telling uncomfortable truths" -- it is a distortion. This crude, dishonest and unprincipled red-baiting aims to convince honest activists (read: you) that they will be "secretly" controlled by some shadowy group. Nothing could be further from the truth. This kind of argument-by-slur aims to hinder participation without principled discussion by using fear instead of engagement. It's time to retire these vapid Karl Rove-style attacks within the left. Reject it, or at least don't accept it as the end of the discussion.

In my experience, those who urge "caution" or rely on crude political stereotypes to end discussion are arguing for passivity in the face of open horror. If you are not engaged in this fight to stop Bush's agenda in an ongoing, explicit way -- what are you waiting for?

Investigate World Can't Wait for yourself and make informed choices about involvement. If you are in NYC or SF, come to tonight's rallies and the Oct. 5 protests. See with your own eyes who is really involved -- and make your choices for the coming week (and months) accordingly. No one is trying to control anyone in this movement. It is about putting some new facts on the ground, refusing to accept the "new normal" and kicking Bush when he is down through the power of the people.

REGARDLESS, we must be in the streets -- and you must find a way not to just "get behind" the WCW banner, but to take up this campaign on your own terms.

Specifically: You have the space to operate as direct action activists, anti-authoritarians and community/labor-based organizers. This is a straight-up political pitch. It is not about signing up for any man behind the curtain. What you see really is what you get.

Seize the day, friend. Make history, and put that little cynic in the back of your head out of its misery.

In struggle,

Jed Brandt

Same old red fascism

05.10.2006 18:22

Every left and anarchist critic of groups like the RCP, ISO, and WWP have been accused of red-baiting and worse. This is just a pathetic attempt to avoid open criticism, which is anathema to authoritarian groups. Nice try, Vinnie, but people can see that you are trying to close off debate.

We've been listening to people (mainly anarchists) whining about the role Commies play in the anti-war movement for well over three years now. So tell me, if you folks are honestly THAT up in arms about it, why have you been unable to get off your asses and create an organization doing similar types of work? Say what you will about the Commies, at least they're doing this type of work. Which is more than I can say for most of the people who sit on the sidelines condemning them.

Makhno

what has the rcp accomplished?

09.10.2006 21:28

what wars have been prevented?

which occupations have ended?

where has the capitalist war machine been pushed back?

as a result of revolutionary communist party actions?

if these actions were effective, then who could complain, but they are not effective.

so it is reasonable to ask questions about why they are not working and why orgs like the rcp keep doing things that are not working.

just asking
