This is a brief photographic timeline before and after Sgt. Larmuur intentionally hit me with his police vehicle [near the end of the Oaxaca Solidarity March on Sunday]. If you zoom in on the pictures you can see his car with and without a scratch before and after he hit me. Please notice in the picture where he is either about to or actually hitting me how close his car is to the people next to me. This is a clear example of the tactics the police employed throughout the entire march where they would speed up their vehicle to intimidate protestors.

further context of the incident/situation

09.11.2006 23:48

I was not able to write much background or context when I posted the article because it was late and I needed sleep. It was one of the few opportunities I had to post the photos since all my "free" time has been spent at meetings or at the consulado. So now I can add more to the story...

The cops were extremely aggressive at the march as anyone there can tell you. The incident took place near the end of the march at the corner of India and Beech streets. Sgt. Larmuur was speeding up on the heals of S. and A. who were at the end of the march trying to protect the crowd from this exact same intimidation tactic and to document it. Fox news guy from interviewing M. who was just outside the picture and were also placed in danger by Sgt. Larmuur.

I decided that something needed to happen to stop the police officer from using this tactic. A wheelchair cannot move out of the way like people can. I am a good driver but my chair is nonetheless considerably less agile than a TAB (person whose body is temporarily able, about 90% of us will have acquired temporary or permanent disabilities during our lifetimes). Cops are aware of the limitations for a wheelchair to jump out of the way. This being the case I went behind S., A., F., and M. to make the police car stop it's dangerous encroachment on the march and on the participants' heels. After I placed myself in between the car and the others, Sgt. Larmuur came to a complete stop because I was in the way as the picture at the top of this article shows. Knowing I was still in the way the Sgt. pushed on the gas regardless of the danger he placed me in. Please note that I don't suggest here that he was going 15mph. He was clearly at a complete stop before he hit me with his car. This does not on the other hand make it acceptable for him to hit me with his car. His car pushed the front of my chair so that it turned in the same direction in which he was traveling while my brakes were on scratching the paint on my chair all the way through to the metal and scratching what I believe to be the plastic bumper on his vehicle.

If you were a witness to this event, noticed the intimidating tactics the police used to incite a riot, or were harrassed by and officer please file a police complaint form and include as many details as possible. Please note that anyone can file a complaint form and you can also file one based on how you witnessed cops treating people other than yourself.

Also I may need a list of witnesses to the incident. Volunteers from indymedia or sagon penn copwatch can forward your information to me.

Thanks

a question

Someone commented to me and asked some questions: Did you drive your chair in front of a moving vehicle in the street? I know that traditionally the law is in favor of the pedestrian having the right of way, but wouldn't intentionally placing yourself in front of a moving vehicle in the street make it far more likely that you would be in the wrong rather than him?

I'm not trying to be inflammatory or snide (the internet is not the best at conveying tone and such), and am actually curious as to the context.

My answer was: There was a march in progress. Technically we were all in front of moving cars that were not only following us but continuously speeding up in back of us as an intimidation tactic. The cop was increasing his closeness beyond intimidation to an unsafe distance behind the people in the picture. He came to a full stop for 5-10 seconds when I went behind them and them I stopped so he wouldn't hit them. Then he started moving while the front of my chair was still in the way. He was at a stop and started moving while I was still stationary.

The march was in the street. I wasn't crossing the street, I was in the march. The police cars were threatening to speed in the crowd. The cops also blew the emergency horns in our ears and played with the sirens. At one moment in the march a Latina police officer was seen doing this and laughing as she drove by.

What the cops were doing was intentional

it's me again
