Here is my letter to the Union-Tribune about their editorial:

Letter to the Editor:

Your Aug. 18, editorial "Honoring Wilson," was a
great stretch in your attempt to "brown-wash"
former Mayor Pete Wilson.

First, spending 5 paragraphs defending his riding
the unfair Proposition 187 (which was ruled illegal
for state sanctioned targeting of Latinos) to the
governorship; you conclude his position was "not
extreme" because "it was shared by 67 percent of the
electorate." Like the old, deep South, which voted in
almost every enabling ordinance of segregation
-extremism and racism is relative. Wilson's arm chair
ride on the gelding named discrimination, for me,
disqualifies him from a bronze tribute.

And second, your maligning of Enrique Morones, who
gave up a corporate career with the Padres, to
struggle for justice, was personally offensive. I
first met him 8 years ago, when I volunteered with his
group Border Angeles; going out in the desert and
saving lives by putting water containers under blue
flags.

However, your attempt at sarcasm but calling him "a
peripatetic local activist," was right on. Indeed, he
is a walkabout, itinerant, philosopher who traverses
the length of our common border with Mexico, seeking
justice, compassion and understanding. Much like Paul of
Tarsus, who roamed the Roman Empire, in his ancient quest
for fairness and tolerance.

The American Friends Service Committee; which won
the Nobel Peace Prize and as a recipient , can
nominate one person each year, takes recommendations
from its local Quaker organizations. A few of us
in San Diego will be suggesting Enrique Morones as our
entry for peace recognition.

In the meantime, let them put up the bronze statue
of Pete Wilson, if you must. The seagulls will know
what to do with it.
