241-Mile March for Peace to Go From Tijuana to San Francisco
indybay.org, reposted by sd imc ,

Fernando Suarez del Solar, Pablo Paredes, Camilo Mejia, and Aidan Delgado will lead a "coalition of the willing" on a 241-mile quest for peace. They will start in Tijuana, Mexico on March 12th, go through Marine Corps Depot Camp Pendleton to the Cesar Chavez burial site in La Paz, CA (on March 22nd), and end in the Mission district of San Francisco with a memorial ceremony and blood drive on March 26th-27th.

Organizers say, "Latinos represent nearly 15% of the US population and 11% of the US military, with many serving in combat or hazardous duty occupations. In addition, an estimated 20% of the fallen service members in the early months of the invasion were Latino. With the continued growth of the Latino population and its vital importance to the future of this country, it is time the Latino community become an active and vocal part of the 60%+ of US citizens that oppose this War. It is also time to show the Latino community that they have a voice and a right to fight for peace and stability. We make this call not only to the Latino population but to all those who agree with our message 'No more bloodshed in Iraq'."

The March will pass through cities such as San Diego, Escondido, Santa Ana, Los Angeles, Rosamond, Keene (La Paz), Fresno, and San Jose. Read more, including info about the march route and initiators. The march is in need of help such as funding, volunteers, media, organizers, and donations.

Riots Erupt in France and Italy
Delete The Border,

France: Student protests over 'Anglo-Saxon' job laws

THOUSANDS of students marched through Paris and blockaded universities across France as their revolt against the Government over a controversial new youth employment law intensified.

Prime Minister Dominique de Villepin has staked his reputation, and possibly his job, on a measure that aims to cut rampant youth unemployment with two-year contracts that enable employers to sidestep rigid French labour laws and fire young workers without reason.

From portland Indymedia: On march the 7th, 400.000 people demonstrated against a new law concerning workers, CPE. CPE "deregulates the job market. CPE means e.g. anyone who gets a new job can be fired within 2 years - at any day, without a cause... e.g. companies will now be allowed to let young employees work all night - if they are at least 15... and so on. CPE makes workers lose many of their rights...

All over France riots and Clashes with the police....some protesters heavily injured... In Toulouse protesters managed to occupy states´buildings... 300 pupils stopped a high speed train (TGV)... In Marseille 5000 pupils attacked police and police stations afters some arrests of demonstrators... schools are occupied by teachers and pupils, e.g. le college de france, or a school in Lannion and and and... in Lille states bulindings were occupied...

50 universities are on strike and/or occupied by students:

ITALY: massive riots in Milano

Italy, Milano. Massive riots started in the heart of the Italian financial capitol, Milano, when hundreds of antifascists attacked police because of their repressive behaviour. The police wanted to stop the antifascists from building barricades against a neofascists? march through Milano. Police lost control: Windows of Banks and Companies were broken, cars and buildings were set on fire, even a nail bomb exploded in a group of police men.... Many persons were injured, some heavily, 45 were arrested.

Si, se puede! - Chicago Witnesses Massive Protest for Immigrant Rights
cimc, global indymedia, + Fight Back news service - repost by pipard,

Federal Courthouse On Friday, March 10, 2006 Chicago’s downtown was paralyzed by an immigrant rights march estimated at more than 100,000 people. The march, organized by a citywide coalition of community, labor and immigrant rights groups, was called to protest the punitive enforcement provisions of the anti-immigrant Sensenbrenner Bill.

Protesters carried hand-lettered signs saying "No Human Being is Illegal", "We are America," "My Mexican immigrant son died in Iraq," "Don't deport my parents,""I'm a dishwasher - not a criminal," and "Si, se puede!" - "Yes We Can!" The crowd stretched two and half miles, from Union Park on the West Side to their rally destination in Federal Plaza.

The march was one of the largest street protests Chicago has ever seen — exceeding the historic May 1, 1886 march down Michigan Ave. by 80,000 largely immigrant workers demanding an eight-hour workday. Read more | Democracy Now! coverage

On Tuesday Feb 14th immigrants across Philadelphia and regionally staged a walkout to protest bill HR 4437 as part of A Day Without An Immigrant. The bill threatens to criminalize those assisting undocumented immigrants as "alien smugglers" and to turn undocumented status from a civil violation to a federal aggravated felony.o

Queer Democrats Discuss Military Issue
Mark Gabrish Conlan/Zenger's Newsmagazine,

Bridget Wilson The predomninantly Queer San Diego Democratic Club rated three Democratic challengers to incumbent Congressmember Duncan Hunter — who pushed through the triple border fence and wants to extend it across the entire U.S.-Mexico border — acceptable at their February 23 meeting. They also heard presentations from Tracy Jada O'Brien on Transgender issues and Bridget Wilson of the Servicemembers' Legal Defense Network on the rights of Queers in the military. Wilson said that even those opposed to the Iraq war and U.S. imperialism in general need to get behind the civil-rights issue of the right to serve in the military, especially since for many working-class Americans today military service is virtually the only way they have to go to college and work their way up in the world.

Saving Peoples' Lives: Border Angels at Work
Peace and Democracy Task Force-Tanja Winter,

Saving Peoples’ Lives: Border Angels At Work’, Special Guest: Enrique Moronoes.

Since the advent of Operation Gatekeeper and the installation of the steel wall at the Border in 1994, migrant persons have been forced to move through the perilous mountain and desert areas of Imperial Valley. After the shooting of 18 year old Guillermo Martinez at the Border, Enrique Morones led the Migrants’ March for Justice from San Diego to Washington, D.C.

"Why We Fight" Opens Today at Ken Cinema
Mark Gabrish Conlan/Zenger's Newsmagazine,

Eugene Jarecki's "Why We Fight," a powerful documentary on the imperialist agenda that has dominated U.S. foreign policy since the end of World War II, opens today (Friday, February 17) at the Ken Cinema in Kensington. Directed by Eugene Jarecki, the new film begins with former President Eisenhower's famous 1961 warning against "unwarranted influence, whether sought or unsought, by the military-industrial complex" and shows how that "complex" has become an integral and almost ineradicable part of American society. "Why We Fight" represents a major political advance over Jarecki's previous film, "The Trials of Henry Kissinger" — whereas "Kissinger" was a liberal film, "Why We Fight" is a radical one.

"Do It for the Children" - March for Migrants in Los Angeles
indio,

Dolores Huerta welcomes the Caravan for Migrants to Los Angeles, on its way to demanding humane immigration policies in Sacramento, Washington, and points in between.

Mother Cabrini, the patron saint of immigrants, was in the house tonight when 120 people gathered in front of La Placita Church on Olvera Street to commemorate the death of Guillermo Martínez Rodríguez and the 4000, or perhaps as many as 10,000, people who have died trying to circumvent the U.S. border wall since its construction in 1994. Prior to 1994, only a dozen or so people were killed annually by the heat or cold of the desert, or by the U.S. Border Patrol.

The Caravan for Migrants was organized by Enrique Morones of Border Angels and San Diego's gente unida to bring national focus to the deaths and to stop anti-immigrant legislation.
