MegaMarch in Oaxaca. Solidarity March and Rally in San Diego
,

Oaxaca (right: John Gibler) and San Diego (left: Miguel) Marches On Sunday, a mega-march organized by the Popular Assembly of the Peoples of Oaxaca (APPO), with an estimated hundreds of thousands to a half million to one million participants, filled the streets of Oaxaca City, reportedly at one point extending as long as 12 kilometers (7 miles). The march was said to be the people's response to the Mexican Federal Preventative Forces' (PFP) failed invasion of the University Autotonima Benito Juarez, which houses APPO's Radio Universidad, and the continuing attacks, arrests and repression. Early on Sunday, a university student guarding the radio station was shot in the chest and remains in critical condition.

Also on Sunday, a Oaxaca solidarity march leaving from the San Diego Oaxaca Solidarity Camp at the Mexican Consulate in Little Italy (at peak ~ 70 participants) took the streets and progressed through downtown and the gaslamp with banners and chants expressing solidarity with the Oaxacan People and their demands: the corrupt governor Ulises Ruiz must go; the federal PFP troops must leave Oaxaca and the political prisoners and disappeared must be returned in good health.

The march was preceded by an open mic rally where speakers discussed the situation in Oaxaca, Oaxaqueños in California, and demands upon the Mexican government and the San Diego Mexican Consul. As the Mexican Consulate was approached at the conclusion of the march, unassociated passersby dragged hay bales, which had been placed on the corner to give Little Italy a fake harvest ambience, into the street, according to an eyewitness who did not wish to be identified. The hay bale blockade at the corner of India and Cedar was the site of a post-march open mic rally further discussing the situation in Oaxaca and the demand for the end to police violence in both Oaxaca and San Diego.

Throughout the march and rally, the sdpd continued harassing and intimidating protesters in an attempt to curtail their rights to speak and be heard, and their rights to occupy public space. Early in the march, one copcar loudspeaker declared that the marchers were participating in a riot and would be arrested if they did not move to the sidewalk. As the march continued in the street, cops threatened the peaceful protesters with violence by dangerously accelerating their cars toward them in the back of and on either side of the march. Late in the march, a cop car struck a protester's wheelchair, fortunately not resulting in injuries.

At the hay bale blockade rally, the sdpd's frustration with nonhierarchical, self-organized resistance movements was evident, as they searched unsuccessfully for a leader to threaten and arrest. Cop photographers and videographers attempted to intimidate the protesters. One sdpd photographer moved into the crowd, apparently thinking that an armed thug amongst peaceful demonstrators would not be noticed. Protesters held signs up to block his view every time he attempted to take a photograph, eventually chasing him back to the sidelines.

Many protesters commented that they were energized by their ability to get out the message about Oaxaca despite the attempts at repression. Music and poetry after the rally produced a festive and hopeful atmosphere.

The San Diego Oaxaca Solidarity Camp continues at the Mexican Consulate, 1549 India Street in Little Italy. The protesters request your continuing help and support.

Manifestantes de La Otra Campaña Usan Arte y Realidad en Apoyo al Pueblo de Oaxaca
repost from e-mail by Jorge,

Oaxaca Update
sdimc volunteer,

danielsan / santa cruz imc The Mexican Federal Preventative Police (PFP) continues to occupy parts of Oaxaca City following an invasion on Sunday, which Vincente Fox has claimed was triggered by the need to restore order following PRI paramilitary killings on Friday. Despite calls from federal legislators, including those of his own PRI, Ulises Ruiz Ortiz has refused to resign. The People of Oaxaca continue to resist, retaining barriers at some locations in the city and attempting to displace the PFP nonviolently.

The Zapatistas have called for solidarity blockades today, November 1, and a general strike on November 20 (espanol, english). Protests have taken place at over 20 Mexican embassies and consulates in the US.

The Oaxaca Solidarity Camp has continuously occupied the sidewalk outside the Mexican Consulate in Little Italy since Sunday evening, and the shifting camp population, drawn from autonomous collectives and groups in the region, has vowed to remain until the occupying forces are withdrawn from Oaxaca.

Over the past several years, Little Italy has been swept clear of real people through a combination of gentrification, cops and private security forces. It now provides a lifeless, sterile concrete, steel and glass environment for its largely atomized, over-consuming zombie inhabitants.

The Camp has brought to this barren a feeling of warmth and community, with singing, chanting, pot banging, signs, candles and a Dia de los Muertos altar. The Consul has been visibly disturbed by the Camp's display of power from below. The sdpd has detained three protesters apparently for having the gall to occupy three-dimensional space, as no legal reason could be discerned by videotaping observers.

The Oaxaca Solidarity Camp continues, as does the electronic blockade of Mexican Consulates and Embassies in North America.

La Otra Campaña Tijuana: Revolution on Our Doorstep
rocky neptun,

from http://enlacezapatista.ezln.org.mx Marcos came to Tijuana, last Wednesday and Thursday, October 18th and 19th, within the shadow of our wall of shame, to bring Zapatismo to Mexico’s fourth largest city through the “La Otra Campaña” tour. A series of forums held over the last year in 31 Mexican states which says that there is a better way to do politics than stolen elections, bribed congress persons, corrupt, violent governors, and corporate thievery. Politics from the bottom up, not top down; where all the stakeholders in civil society; workers, peasants, students, women, gays, indigenous groups have the power to control the economic, social and political processes that influence their lives.

Here, amid the ruins of the former world of the Tijuana rich, young people commit themselves to authentic lives and autonomous communities free of greed. They do not fear the loss of material comforts or jail. A new culture of resistance begins to take shape as Mexico rediscovers its continuing revolution. There is, indeed, hope.

FROM SDIMC: Further stories, photos, audio and video on the EZLN's Sixth Commission visit to Tijuana are forthcoming...

No to Angelides and Schwarzenegger!
Steven Argue ,

Chicano Park demonstration Angelides criticized Schwarzenegger for his praise for the racist anti-immigrant vigilantes called the “Minutemen” while in the same breath calling for a "guest worker" program that would create a new class of super-exploited worker with no political rights. Under the same type of program in the past U.S. bosses often failed to even pay Mexican workers for their hard labor. The fact that Angelides and the Democrat Party are now calling for this kind of legalization of indentured servitude place them firmly in the same racist camp as Schwarzenegger.
