Public Hearing: Blackwater Training Facility in San Diego?
Lance/reposts,
Blackwater, a multi-million dollar mercenary company owned exclusively by a right-wing Christian billionaire, is trying to develop an 824-acre military training facility in the rural community of Potrero in southeast San Diego. All of the land is either within the Cleveland National Forest or an Agricultural Preserve.
The citizens of Potrero are trying to stop its construction but are having a hard time stopping the political power of Blackwater. --Read More--

There is no way in hell Blackwater USA, war profiteers, Inc. are going to invade our public lands... Not only should Blackwater be dismantled, their activities in Iraq should be revealed. They send mercenaries in to kill, maim, and injure, and then deny negligence when their people get killed and dragged through the streets...--Read More--
Connie: Just what we do not need is the crazy making of war here in Southern California. Why is it that money talks so loud, there is no benefit to the citizens of the area, it is not bringing new revenue or jobs to the area. The land is better used as farm land, we need food not weapons. The Potrero Planning Committee have been seduced into believing this is in their best interest. I am wondering how many of them were enticed with favors and money? The military already have a training facility in that area, they take up a huge portion of the land with their military training. The sound carries for miles, the chopper activity, etc is heard everywhere. --Read More--

Locals Visit Cucapá Community
sdimc volunteer,
Since approximately 9000 years ago the Cucapá have lived in the land adjacent to the Rio Colorado, dedicated fundamentally to fishing. Eighteen years ago the Mexican federal government began passing laws that made it nearly impossible for the indigenous Cucapá to live in these lands. The rivers near the Cucapá are drying out because of the dams that have been built on the US side of the Colorado River. Therefore, the current fishing grounds have become a last resort for their survival. In addition, in these waters, fishing of any type of marine species has been prohibited. With the implementation of this decree, the life of the Cucapá has been gravely affected; putting at risk the existence of the Cucapá as indigenous people in Baja California.*
*previously posted for full press release CLICK HERE
a san diego indymedia volunteer got an opportunity to interview Fernanda Rios (collective zapatista, california coalition against poverty) and Andrea Donez (collective zapatista) who have contributed time to organize support for the Cucapá camp and who recently traveled to the Cucapá community Q: How did you hear about the Cucapá situation?
F.R.: Sup came to the border and told us we should be supporting the indigenous communities nearby.
A.D.: After the commission visited the Cucapá, Delegate Zero said, “We have decided to send an urgent message to the Mexicans and Chicanos north of the Rio Grande to come here in order to maximize the number of people here, create a safe space, and protect the Cucapá and Kiliwa community during the fishing season.”

New Search Warrants in Migrant Camp Vandalism
Diane,
SAN DIEGO—Detectives from San Diego Police Department served two more search warrants this morning in connection with the vandalism of migrant camps in McGonigle Canyon. Vandals entered the camps on January 27, and slashed new clothing, tents, blankets, sleeping bags, and other personal property.
The search warrants were served at the homes of Jeff Schwilk, founder of the San Diego Minutemen, and Julie Adams, resident of Rancho Penasquitos and one of the organizers of the November 2006, McGonigle Canyon anti-migrant protests.

Mexican Native Speaks for American Nativists
Diane,
In the past year, Claudia Garcia Spencer has emerged as a new voice in the anti-immigration movement, which relies on Spencer’s Mexican heritage to add a patina of legitimacy to known nationalist organizations. Spencer, who says she speaks on behalf of the majority of American Hispanics and Latinos, claims that the American way of life is threatened by “hordes of shameless, ungrateful, illegal foreigners,” who are turning US cities into “third-world cesspool[s].”

Local support for the Cucapá Communities
Since approximately 9000 years ago the Cucapá have lived in the land
adjacent to the Rio Colorado, dedicated fundamentally to fishing. Eighteen years ago the Mexican federal government began passing laws that made it nearly impossible for the indigenous Cucapá to live in these lands. In effect in 1993 the zone was declared an ecological reserve, protected by the general law of ecological equilibrium...
Today there are only 304 Cucapá left. They face immanent extermination
and now they rely on the support of La Otra Campaña with the purpose of
continuing the only productive activity for self sustainability.
Therefore from February 28, to May 3, 2007, in the immediate surroundings of the communities of El Mayor and El Zanjón located in the area of “la Bocana or Delta del Rio Colorado”, the adherents of La Otra Campaña will install a camp of support for the Cucapá community.

Sonia Nazario Brings Enrique's Journey to Lif
Mark Gabrish Conlan/Zenger’s Newsmagazine,
Los Angeles Times reporter Sonia Nazario spoke at the San Diego Public Library February 12 to promote her book "Enrique's Journey," about a 17-year-old Honduran boy who successfully journeyed from his native country through Mexico to reach his mother, who had left him behind on her own journey to the U.S. 12 years earlier. Sonia later duplicated Enrique's dangerous journey through Mexico by stowing away on the tops of freight trains, and her book puts a human face on the controversial issue of undocumented immigratio. At the same time, she questions the conventional wisdom on both sides of the immigration debate and says the only long-term solution is to improve the economies and job opportunities in Central American countries so their citizens won't want to immigrate.

The caravan currently is a few days out of San Diego, with stops in San Antonio, New Mexico and Los Angeles planned before returning for the People's Immigration Hearing on Saturday, February 17, 11:30AM at Border Field State Park.
From Border Angels: McAllen to Brownsville (2/9): Hundreds gathered to say welcome and join the caravan !!! It was a beautiful sight as 30+ autos joined MARCHA MIGRANTE II and went from McAllen to Weslaco to Brownsville for presentations and to hear testimonials. Eagle Pass (2/10): We meet with the Institute of Mexican Abroad, Border Commission. We are again welcomed with wonderful kindness and support. We attend meetings and forums with locals, local authorities and discuss realities, policies and here stories of why we need the humane immigration reform NOW! Border Fence- The Cost is Far Too High
Stewart A. Alexander,
A study released last December by the non-partisan Congressional Research Service says a proposed 700 mile stretch of fence, along the 2,000 mile U.S. – Mexico border, could cost an estimated $49 billion. But what the report fails to say, U.S. –built walls on the border would cost both the U.S. and Mexico trillions of dollars in economic losses over the predicted 25-year lifespan of the fence, and non-monetary damage to political and cultural relations between the two countries would also last for decades.

Migrant March II Update
Border Angels (repost),
MARCHA MIGRANTE II is a caravan traversing the entire MEXICO/US border from San Diego (Feb 2) to Brownsville Texas (Feb 9) and back (Feb 17). The caravan will gather stories along the border journey and share these stories at the People's Immigration Hearing in San Diego on the 17th as well as take these stories directly to Washington DC. The goal is humane and comprehensive immigration reform.
Initial Reports: (via Enrique Morones, Border Angels) San Diego (2/2): We planted the first of 4400 crosses and honored Oscar Garcia Barrios killed at border May 18th, 2006 as a very emotional letter was read (by Micaela Saucedo) from his mother. We then said good bye to all and 25 autos joined the MARCHA MIGRANTE II as we headed to our first stop the Holtville cemetery. Holtville (2/2): We planted 440 crosses for the unidentified but not forgotten migrants buried there. Yuma (2/3) We were met by 100 local community members and we placed 100 crosses for those that have died in the region the last 2 years alone. Phoenix (2/3): In the evening 500 people met us as we camped out and joined Elias Bermudez and other Arizona locals on a "fast for justice" 464 more crosses on the fences surrounding the camp site. Tucson (2/4): Isabel Garcia shares two heartbreaking stories of the tragic deaths of two children. Father Carney, Kat Rodriguez, Alexis Mazon and all of us were moved to tears as 12 year old Mathew (the youngest of the caravan group, asked "why we killing all these people" as 200 crosses laid in the middle of our circle. Douglas (2/4): Deliver supplies to migrants and to remember the tragic murder of Francisco Javier Dominguez (killed in the region, last month).

Vandals Target San Diego Migrant Camps
Diane,
SAN DIEGO--More than a half dozen migrant camps in the Rancho Penasquitos area have been vandalized in the past week, leaving many of the camps’ residents without clothing, blankets, or shelter.
In all cases, intruders entered the camps while the migrants were away and used knives or scissors to slash tents, tarps, and bicycle tires, slit open sleeping bags, and cut up blankets, shoes, and clothing. Many of the damaged items were new, some with the tags still attached. The camps’ residents who were interviewed asked not to be identified, but one said that even his pencils had been broken in half. He said he “just can’t fathom the hearts and minds of people who would do something like this.”

A(nother) Weekend with the Minutemen
a(nother) anti-racist,
I wonder how many people know that there are a lot of organizers who spend almost every morning with the Minutemen and almost every weekend with them as well. Well, not a lot every morning at 7am, but on the weekends, we're all pretty busy.
This weekend with the Minutemen started on Saturday morning at 7am. First, the usuals went to the Home Depot on Fairmount in mission gorge. The Minutemen go there daily and harass day laborer and anti-racist organizers go there every morning since the Minutemen have been responsible for pepper spraying, assaulting and threatening people with physical and sexual violence on numerous occasions.
My Saturday began when we went to Gabriel Pollach's barbershop at noon. Gabriel is the Minuteman who pepper sprayed about 10 non-violent artists and activists in National City, with absolutely no response from the police. So, a bunch of us decided to visit him at his place of employment. We figure that since the Minutemen spend everyday stopping day laborers from geting work and feeding their families, we should do the same...

Is The Official San Diego Martin Luther King Jr Parade Too Official?
Repost- San Diego Peace and Justice Coalition,
This year the Peace Resource Center and San Diego Coalition for Peace & Justice have decided to not participate in the annual Martin Luther King, Jr. Parade.
Why not? Over the years we have participated in the parade to honor MLK's values and vision and as a counter to the militarization of the local parade, which includes the FBI, Border Patrol, Homeland Security contingents as well as many JROTC units. This militarization of the parade continues and has been increasing--discussions with parade organizers have fallen on deaf ears. The parade has been increasingly marginalized in the community, first moved to Harbor Drive, then to a route around the outside of Petco Park--with fewer and fewer people attending the parade. --Read More--
