Mark Gabrish Conlan/Zenger’s Newsmagazine,
The Peace and Democracy Action Group of the First Unitarian-Universalist Church in Hillcrest held a program April 26 commemorating the 20th anniversary of the nuclear disaster at Chernobyl. Rochelle Becker talked about why there's no way to make nuclear power plants safe, and Angelina Galiteva, head of the World Council for Renewable Energy (WCRE), talked about the economic incentives that can help bring about the transition to renewable energy sources — as well as the so-called "portfolio" plan, a "market-based" solution being tried in the U.S. which she says will only delay the transition to renewables.

Macho Men and State Capitalism ...
Hanna Dahlstrom,
* Latin America is boiling with revolutionary potential these days that could redefine economics, politics and social relations. But sometimos things aren't always as they seem. Venezuelan President Hugo Chavez is widely seen to be at the center of Latin America's transformation by building a regional trade bloc through the creation of ALBA and Venezuela's membership in Mercosur to oppose U.S. dominance and its constant push for free trade agreements with Latin American governments.

Support Indigenous Rights: Sign the Free Gras
Rainforest Action Network,
In Ontario, Canada, an indigenous community called the Grassy Narrows First Nation are being subjected to human rights abuses. Logging companies, Weyerhaeuser and Abitibi are clear-cut logging their land without the community’s consent. This exploitation is poisoning their waters with toxins, robbing the community of economic opportunities, and destroying their way of life.

Environmental activist Rod Coronado arrested for "teaching and demonstrating" at a 2003 San Diego lecture
arizona indymedia, reposted by sd indymedia volunteer,
Tucson environmental activist Rod Coronado was arrested Wednesday afternoon at his workplace by agents with the FBI and the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms & Explosives (ATF). The arrest is in connection with a Grand Jury indictment in San Diego charging Coronado with "teaching and demonstrating" to others how to commit arson at a lecture he gave August 1, 2003 in San Diego . According to the FBI press release, Coronado "taught and demonstrated the making and use of a destructive device, with the intent that the device be used to commit arson" at a public gathering in San Diego's Hillcrest neighborhood. Three animal rights activists in San Diego were jailed for contempt of court in 2005 for refusing to testify in the secret Grand Jury investigation. Coronado is not charged with setting a fire 15 hours before his lecture that caused $50 million in damages and destroyed a large apartment complex under construction in the University Towne Center area of San Diego. Neighbors observed that ATF agents searched his home in the Dunbar Spring neighborhood for several hours. Coronado’s arrest is the latest in the string of arrests across the country related to environmental and animal rights related actions. John Francis/The Man Who Wouldn't Talk
Mark Gabrish Conlan/Zenger's Newsmagazine,
John Francis was a 24-year-old African-American hippie living in Marin County in 1971, when an accident between two oil tankers in San Francisco Bay changed his life. For the next 19 years he embarked on a worldwide odyssey, refusing to use ANY motorized transportation to take responsibility for the world's use of fossil fuels, and spending 17 years without speaking so he would be forced to listen to the world and the people around him. While maintaining his commitment to remain silent and not use motor vehicles, he nonetheless went to three universities and got a Ph.D. in environmental studies, which he later used as an environmental ambassador for the United Nations and an advisor to the U.S. Coast Guard on what to do about oil spills.
