San Diego Critical Mass - June Interviews
queer-j brad,

San Diego Critical Mass - June The last friday of every month, cyclists from over 400 cities worldwide participate in Critical Mass, a group bicycle ride. To many riders, Critical Mass is a leaderless celebration of cycling and other responsible forms of transportation. To others, it is a way to reclaim the streets for social interaction and fun, rather than being locked away and isolated in cars. To still others, Critical Mass is a way to feel safe as a cyclist on the streets by riding together in a group. And for some, Critical Mass is a protest against the car culture that is polluting the air, causing global warming and consuming natural resources that formed over millions of years in little more than a century.

The past few months of San Diego Critical Mass have seen disagreements about its goals and how to interact with drivers and pedestrians. As with almost any endeavor in our macho, competitive culture, only the loudest, most privileged voices tend to be heard. In an attempt to provide an outlet for a broader spectrum of opinion, I talked to 13 riders prior to June Critical Mass.

Green syndicalist response to CA water board
Sacramento Valley Earth First! ,

The usually deaf (hard of hearing) official characters of the CA water board are directly responsible for the increased militarization of labor and ecoactivists in the pesticide soaked central valley..

MESSAGE FROM SDIMC EDITORIAL COLLECTIVE: The San Diego Independent Media Center Editorial Collective regrets the offensive, ableist language used in this abstract by "Sacramento Valley Earth First!" and any offense it might have caused our readers. We strive to make this website a safe space for all and thank "somebody who cares" and "me" for calling out "SVEF!". Rather than hiding the post, we decided to leave it up and add this message in the hopes of illustrating how discriminatory language is embedded in everyday phrases used by well-meaning people. We welcome your continued comments on this decision and others regarding site content.

L.A. Urban Garden Eviction Update
Mark,

The backbreaking work and careful cultivation over 14 years of small plots sown with food and medicinal plants was destroyed by bulldozers in hours.

Remember your pre-school days, when you would carefully pile up a stack of blocks only to have some bully come along and gleefully knock them over? Those bullies have grown up and are now the CEOs of multinational corporations and big developers like Horowitz in L.A.

SOUTH CENTRAL FARMERS EVICTION HAPPENING NOW!
Natalie and sdimc volunteer,

from la.indymedia.org 5:20 a.m. The sherrifs (sqaudron of helicopters and squad cars) are at the farm. The eviction process is starting now. Farmers are calling all activists to converge to the farm for a massive protest (Alameda & 41st Street). The eviction might take up to 3 to 4 hours or longer.

Eviction of South Central Farmers and Supporters. Darryl Hannah and John Quigley still inside the property, other peaceful protestors conducting nonviolent civil disobedience.

From southcentralfarmers.com:
The South Central Farm is under siege. If you live in LA or anywhere near there please make your way to the farm to keep the protesters and farmers safe.

The immediate area around the Farm has been blocked off by the authorities limiting access to the site. Spontaneous rallies of support have sprouted on these perimeters with crowds increasing in size as the morning passes. Protesters still inside the Farm are being physically removed and arrested.

The easiest access is to come from the South side of the farm coming north on Alameda or to head east towards the Farm on 41st or any other streets that run east/west bound.

Once again, this is the Red Alert! The Sheriffs have begun and are carrying out the eviction! Mobilize as many people as you come to continue to protest this oppressive action

Arrests have already been made. It is still unconfirmed but there are also reports that a protester was carried out on a stretcher.

Bulldozer positioned nearby have began breaking through the fences.

Once again, please converge to the Farm.
41st Street and Long Beach Ave. Los Angeles, CA

SDIMC Film Nite/Critical Mass Ride VIDEO
queer-j brad,

mass on market The San Diego Independent Media Center sponsored a Cycling Film Nite, Critical Mass Discussion and Critical Mass Ride on Wednesday, May 24. About 40 people attended the films, and about 35 went on the ride afterwards. The films, Return of the Scorcher and We are Traffic, both by filmmaker Ted White, were inspiring, if a bit long, the discussion was productive, and the ride, although it was laid back, or maybe because it was laid back, was the best I have been on. The first field test of the sdimc helmet cam gave rise to a short, crudely edited video.

July 15th No G8 International Day of Action A
rising tide NA,

July 15th will be an International Day of Action Against Climate Change. As G8 energy ministers promise trillions in new subsidies to the industries destroying our planet and our future, we will take action to shut them down! This is a call for autonomous, decentralized actions appropriate for your town, city, or bioregion. Use this international day of action to support local struggles against oil refineries, gas pipelines, strip mines and coal-fired power plants. Disrupt the financial backers of the fossil fuel industry. Host teach-ins to spread sustainable post-petroleum living skills. Find a weak point in the infrastructure of resource exploitation and throw a literal or symbolic wrench in the works. Visit your local polluters and give 'em hell!

L.A. to repeat Atenco?
Mark,

Like Frank Zappa said, "It can't happen here." Or can it? Is Los Angeles about to use police to evict cooperative farmers in order to build a Wal-Mart? This farm has been struggling just to exist for a long time. The people are very apt to continue to resist eviction. Atenco is coming home.
