Election 2006: Mixed Blessings
Mark Gabrish Conlan/Zenger’s Newsmagazine,
An analysis of the November 7 election results plus the ways in which the Democratic takeover of Congress has been reported in the corporate media since. The analysis suggests that the Democrats will have a hard time maintaining their Congressional majority if they don't take a strong stand on corruption and ethics issues; that conservative social issues in general and a Constitutional amendment to ban same-sex marriage may actually have an easier time of passing in the new Congress, since many of the recently elected Democrats assured their constituents in their campaigns that they were anti-abortion rights and anti-Gay marriage; and that the "outings" of Florida Congressmember Mark Foley and Reverend Ted Haggard towards the end of the campaign may be more complex issues than most progressives believe.

Okupa! Video about squats in Southern Europe
dj lotu5 and the platform,
This is an early, rough cut of this film. I'm not sure what direction I want to go with this and am looking for feedback.
Okupa investigates Deleuze's figure of the urban nomad, engaging in war with the state through the creation of smooth spaces. The video shows the activities and struggles of 4 occupied social centers or squats: Dezguace, Seco and Labo 03 all in Madrid and Casa de Iniciativas 1.5 in Málaga. The film shows the hacklabs, theater productions and workshops that are the daily activity of the social centers as well as the struggles against eviction.
The video is a rough cut, and as such has small editing glitches. Also, it is partially subtitled, but not contiguously subtited, so if you don't speak spanish and the subtitles stop, skip ahead to the next section of the film.
(can anyone help me translate this email into español?)

Animal and Earth Defenders Under Attack by Feds and Corporations
san diego indymedia volunteer/reposts,
Today the US House of Reps passed by voice vote the Animal Enterprise Terrorism Act (AETA), which was previously approved by the Senate. AETA labels as terrorism any action that would cause loss of profits by corporations that exploit animals, including whistleblowing or nonviolent civil disobedience. Herr Bush is expected to sign the bill gleefully. Read More
In Other Recent Green Scare News: From greenisthenewred.com and SupportRod.org: Rod Coronado, the government’s poster-child for “eco-terrorist” scare-mongering, is involved in multiple court cases right now, including charges under an obscure section of a law dealing with “Distribution of Information Relating to Explosives.” At a speech in San Diego, someone in the audience asked how Coronado committed an arson years ago in the name of animal rights and the environment. He grabbed a plastic juice bottle from a table and said he used a bottle like that one, filled with gasoline and attached to a timer, then went to the next question. For that he’s facing 20 years in prison under a rarely-used federal statute... Rod’s next court date is February 8, 2007. If his motion to strike down the statute is denied, the judge will set a date for a future motion hearing where Rod will bring additional challenges to the Indictment against him and the facts alleged by the government. If the case proceeds to trial, it is anticipated that the trial will occur in the summer of 2007. Read More
From ecoprisoners.org: Seven activists in Los Angeles had their homes raided in connection with a campaign against the POM Wonderful juice company, makers of POM pomegranate juice and Evian water. POM has funded $10 million in research into the health effects of its juice, including conducting numerous studies on animals which included inducing erectile disfunction and depriving newborn mice of oxygen to the brain. The raids are yet another transparent attempt by the government to stifle free speech at the request of large corporations (POM is based in Santa Monica, CA, the town whose police carried out the raids) Read More

Green Scare Defendents Plead Guilty but are Not Implicating Others
repost from portland indymedia, fbiwitchhunt,
The term "Green Scare" is widely used to refer to the U.S. government's current stepped-up program of harassment, intimidation and fear targeting the Earth and animal liberation movements. The government's campaign has been carefully crafted, with the help of Earth and animal-exploiting big business, in an effort to silence these growing political movements. The "Green Scare" has so far resulted in numerous grand juries, indictments and arrests.
The four remaining non-cooperating defendants in the Oregon "Green Scare" case today changed their pleas and agreed to drop their request for production of NSA surveillance materials and data. Recent negotiations between federal prosecutors and the defendants resulted in a global resolution non-cooperation plea agreement whereby the four defendants will agree to accept responsibility for their own roles in environmentally motivated crimes, but do not agree to provide information or testify against anyone now or in the future.
Despite the agreement however, federal prosecutors have asked the court to apply a "terrorism enhancement" at sentencing. Should Judge Aiken grant the government's request, the non-cooperating defendants could face up to 20 years in prison in addition to the terms of the plea agreement. The government is seeking the "terrorism enhancement" despite the fact that the crimes to which they have admitted responsibility only involve the destruction of private property; no government property was damaged in any of the incidents.

This, below is about just one angle that questions the whole "smoking" brouhaha. Question is..how to get folks that don't like "smokey bars" to put that personal thing aside and to prioritize the issue of unjust law and corrupted science, gov't, and media?
A vote against "tobacco" or "smoking" is a vote FOR Big Pesticides and chlorine and dioxin and the rest, including their insurers and investors. True. Why ELSE would mainstream commercial media promote the "smoke free" issue? For our health?

Local Volunteer Speaks on Katrina Cleanup
Mark Gabrish Conlan/Zenger’s Newsmagazine,
Encinitas roofing contractor and San Diego Veterans for Peace activist Jim Brown spoke at the First Unitarian-Universalist Church in Hillcrest October 24 and discussed his experiences joining the volunteer effort to clean up New Orleans following Hurricane Katrina. Professionally trained in mold removal — a major need following any sort of flood — Brown offered expertise and tools, told workers what protective equipment they needed, saw the effects of racism first-hand and said many of his fellow volunteers, most of whom were sent by churches, were being moved towards the Left poltically by seeing the havoc left by Katrina and the failure of government at all levels — federal, state and local — to deal with the aftermath.

Bike Ride for Climate Justice
queer-j brad,
On Friday evening, five members of San Diego Cyclists for Justice distributed over 250 flyers on global warming and resistance to corporate climate change while riding through the streets of Hillcrest and North Park. This Bike Ride for Climate Justice was an action in solidarity with activists in Mexico protesting the G8+5 meeting in Monterrey Oct 3-4, where governments of the eight richest countries and five developing nations rubber-stamped a plan to invest trillions in propping up the fossil fuel economy and to shift the burden of ameliorating the effects of resource overconsumption to the Global South through carbon trading.
Flyer distribution began at the haunted house in Balboa Park, where riders pointed out to those in line that climate change is way scarier than ghosts. Shouts of Climate Justice Now, Resist Corporate Climate Change and Stop the G8 echoed off buildings as flyers were handed to pedestrians, coffee drinkers, workers, dog walkers and some drivers along University Ave. The ride ended at the Rubber Rose Sexuality Shop, where a plan was hatched for a Climate Change is Scary Ride - details forthcoming.

Climate/Oaxaca: Virtual Sit-In and Bike Ride
sdimc volunteer,
UPDATE From Rising Tide North America: "The exact location of the G8+5 Climate Summit in Mexico was unknown ... Early sources said Mexico City, but this proved impossible to confirm. We now know that the G8+5 climate meeting is happening in Monterrery, hundreds of miles away from the Alternative Climate Justice Dialogue and Convergence that we initiated and organized in Mexico City. We suspect that the G8+5 meeting was moved away from Mexico's capitol to avoid the sting of popular dissent, not just from us climate activists but more critically from the massive movements for democracy and justice that have convulsed Mexico in recent months and converged in Mexico City. Red Alert Virtual Strike against the G8+5 and Mexican government websites: click here"
The elite of the richest countries are reaping huge profits from dangerous climate change while placing the burden on the most economically disadvantaged, rolling the dice with our life support systems in pursuit of higher profits. The eight richest countries in the world, the G8, plus five developing countries are meeting in Mexico City this week to agree to invest trillions to prop up the fossil fuel economy and to promote carbon trading, which we already know doesn’t work and will just shift the burden further to the Global South. Local activist groups with international participation are poised to resist the G8+5 meeting.
At the same time, President of Mexico Vincente Fox is preparing to send his stormtroopers to attack the Popular Assemblies of the Peoples of Oaxaca (APPO), who have been occupying parts of Oaxaca City for over four months to demand the ouster of governor Ulises Ruiz Ortiz - a corrupt frontman for corporate globalization - and the release of political prisoners.
Corporate-driven, neoliberal climate change. Corporate-driven, neoliberal suppression of resistance movements for democracy and local control. Different problem. Same enemy.

“HIV/AIDS” Another Government Lie, Says Davis
Mark Gabrish Conlan/Zenger’s Newsmagazine,
John F. Kennedy wasn't killed by a lone assassin, the "Gulf of Tonkin" incident used as a pretext to escalate the Viet Nam war never happened, there were no weapons of mass destruction in Iraq — and HIV can't possibly be the cause of AIDS. The first three government lies in that list have already been exposed, and author, former state senator and former physician's assistant Stephen Davis is committing himself to exposing the last one. His book, "Wrongful Death: The AIDS Trial," presents the case against HIV as the cause of AIDS in the context of a courtroom-thriller novel, with 71 pages of references to document his scientific sources.

Resistance to Corporate Climate Change
rising tide north america, uk-imc and sdimc,
San Diego Indymedia will be sponsoring a Climate Justice/Resistance film screening and discussion in advance of the G8+5 Climate Change Talks in Mexico City: Wed Sept 27 7PM at Voz Alta, 1544 Broadway, 1 blk from City College Downtown San Diego. Details soon...
From UK Climate Camp: The Climate Camp was about squaring up to climate criminals. Hundreds of people converged to take action on Drax - from a colourful kids demo blocking the main gates, to small teams of people locking themselves to machinery inside the fence, the intent was clear. Drax must shut now! It is time to push aside the big money makers of the world – and make space for a future where the needs of people and the planet come first.
From UK Indymedia: Actions against Drax Power Station started early on August 31 and continued all day, with the Drax perimeter being breached several times. Up to 600 campaigners against climate change participated in the Reclaim Power mass action. Four main blocs gathered at the centre of the Climate Camp before splitting off into different groups, with some heading towards Drax across fields to avoid police road blocks.
Just after 4.30am seven activists occupied a Drax lighting tower. Later nearby roads were blocked by different affinity groups and another Drax lighting tower was also occupied with a banner reading "No Future For You". More perimeter penetrations occured as more groups arrived at the fence to be met with police in riot gear, horses and dogs.
From Rising Tide North America: The idea battle that UK activists face is more against rampant greenwashing and the notion that green capitalism, carbon trading and other market-based carbon-offset schemes will save us. Micro-reductions are not only insignificant when you consider that the numerous feedback loops (trapped methane in the Siberian permafrost, the shrinking arctic, the Greenland ice sheet, and the amazon, to name a few) are causing climate change to occur much faster than expected; such incremental reforms are actually quite damaging, in that they reassure the public that everything is under control when we all need to be making drastic lifestyle changes.
We must make it clear that the system that created this shit is not going to fix it - the struggle for social justice, for sustainability, for equality, must necessarily be a struggle against capitalism. Those of us living in the US have more opportunities than anyone else in the world to hit the Earth-destroying machine where it's most vulnerable - from inside the brain of the monster.
