Anti-Torture Activist Speaks in San Diego
Mark Gabrish Conlan/Zenger’s Newsmagazine,

Jennifer Harbury, director of the First Unitarian-Universalist Church's Stop Torture Permanently [STOP] campaign and author of the book "Truth, Torture and the American Way," spoke at the First U-U Church in Hillcrest November 3. She argued that torture has been a consistent part of U.S. policy since 1947, when the CIA was founded and launched experiments in how to break detainees under torture that resulted in the techniques used in Viet Nam in the 1960's, Latin America in the 1970's through the 1990's and Afghanistan, Iraq and Guantánamo today. She also said that torture simply doesn't work; it doesn't yield good information and it antagonizes the populations it targets and thereby makes them more, not less, likely to resist occupation.

Anti-Union Union Tribune Backs Prop 75
j,

Following Bush's lead towards a more Orwellian society, Arnold's four propositions (74, 75, 76, and 77) all have names that are contrary to what the real outcomes of the props would be. Now Senator McCain has joined Arnold. I'd like to know how that deal was made!! Well as we all know just follow the money or look at the endorsers. Here is a quote from the Union Tribue a very Anti-Union newspaper supporting prop 75. Paycheck Protection - yeah right! More like Fascism A la Carte. Don't give Arnold Props - Vote No on 74-77.

Knowing the source of this piece makes it all the more disturbing. It is not every day that the editor of a respected national magazine publishes an essay claiming that America is not on the road to becoming, but ALREADY IS, a fascist state.... or words to that affect.

It's the Values, Stupid, Says George Lakoff
Mark Gabrish Conlan/Zenger's Newsmagazine,

George Lakoff, professor of cognitive linguistics at UC Berkeley and author of "Moral Politics: How Liberals and Conservatives Think." gave a lecture at UCSD October 17 in which he said the Right has won its current hegemony in American politics because they've had a better understanding of how Americans think. Whereas Democrats, liberals, progressives and Leftists have framed their ideas in terms of reasoned arguments, Republicans, conservatives and radical-Rightists have pitched their arguments in terms of moral values Americans hold dear. Lakoff analyzed liberals and conservatives as having different views of the family and God: conservatives see the need for a strict father imposing discipline through punishment while liberals are more likely to see father and mother as equal and both charged with nurturing their child and instilling responsibility from within instead of imposing it from without.

A Warning ?
Ben,

Where would we really find the principal danger to civil liberty in a republic? Not in the governors as governors, not in the governed as governed, but in the governed unequipped to function as governors. The chief enemies of republican freedom are mental sloth, conformity, bigotry, superstition, credulity, monopoly in the market of ideas, and utter, benighted ignorance. Footnote 1 to ADDERLEY v. FLORIDA, 385 U.S. 39 (1966), JUSTICE DOUGLAS, with whom THE CHIEF JUSTICE, MR. JUSTICE BRENNAN, and MR. JUSTICE FORTAS concur, dissenting.

Norman Solomon Speaks in San Diego
Mark Gabrish Conlan/Zenger's Newsmagazine,

Norman Solomon, columnist and head of the Institute for Public Accuracy (which attempts to get progressive voices featured in the mainstream media), spoke in San Diego September 29 at a benefit organized by Activist San Diego for the Guerrero Azteca Project of anti-war activist Fernando Suárez del Solár. Promoting and reading from his new book "War Made Easy," Solomon spoke mostly of the ease with which any determined President can build public support for a war he wants to wage, and how the corporate media help him through turning themselves into transmission belts for pro-war propaganda. The event raised $1,000 for Guerrero Azteca Project and its efforts to offer scholarships to young Latinos and other students of color to give them other ways to pay for college than by joining the military.

DeLay indicted, steps down
bruce,

Finally, one of the myriad corrupting influences has to take a seat. Delay is about as 'evil' as you can get when it comes to the Constitution and liberty. Not that Drier is much better; and note that Drier of one of Ahnold's closest 'advisors';with all that has come out, the new name is 'Republicorrupters' for those is Congress professing to be 'Republican'.

Over 1,000 Turn Out to San Diego Peace Events
Mark Gabrish Conlan/Zenger's Newsmagazine,

San Diego’s contribution to the international day of opposition to the U.S. war on Iraq on Saturday, September 24 was highly successful, with over 1,000 people participating in the afternoon rally at Sixth and Laurel in Balboa Park and the feeder marches that led to it. But the rally revealed some differences between members of the anti-war coalition that threaten its ability to hold together and reach out to the broader U.S. public, especially people who’ve decided that the war was a mistake in the first place but aren’t ready to support an immediate U.S. withdrawal from Iraq.

Prison Boom a Product of Racism, Matlin Says
Mark Gabrish Conlan/Zenger's Newsmagazine,

The United States, home to six percent of the world’s population, contains 25 percent of the world’s prisoners, David Matlin, literature professor at San Diego State University and former teacher in New York state prisons, told an audience of about 60 at the First Unitarian-Universalist Church in Hillcrest September 16. Drawing part of his talk from his book, "Prisons: Inside the New America," Matlin combined shocking statistics about the sheer reach of America’s burgeoning prison system with reflections about what the high rate of incarceration means to us as a society and to our values.

Dissolution of faith in governance
bruce,

"That is just what Fourth Generation opponents strive for, a systemic breakdown in their state adversary. The danger sign in America is not a hot national debate over the war in Iraq and its course, but precisely the absence of such a debate – which, as former Senator Gary Hart has pointed out, is largely due to a lack of courage on the part of the Democrats."
