"Planet of Slums" Author Speaks in San Diego
Mark Gabrish Conlan/Zenger’s Newsmagazine,
Mike Davis, author of several best-selling books on urban corruption and apocalypse, spoke at the First Unitarian-Universalist Church Wednesday, September 13 and outlined the basic themes of his new book, "Planet of Slums." His argument was that one billion or more people worldwide now live in slum conditions, that they exist almost totally outside the organized world economy, and that the breakdown of any sense of community and the rise of the "Washington consensus" and the structural adjustment programs it imposed on the Third World have pretty much wiped out any chance for these people to work themselves up economically and better their lives.

Calif Props.: Billions For Special interest
Stewart A. Alexander,
When Governor Schwarzenegger ran for office in 2003 he promised to work for the people of California and not for the special interest, now in 2006 Arnold Schwarzenegger has become the champion of special interest groups. The 2006 bond and tax package, presented by the governor and the state legislature, is the worst package ever offered to California voters in the state’s history.

David Rovics Performs in San Diego Sept. 8
Mark Gabrish Conlan/Zenger’s Newsmagazine,
America’s political folksingers have been fanning the flames of discontent for at least 100 years, from the IWW’s Joe Hill (convicted on trumped-up charges and executed in 1915) to Woody Guthrie and Pete Seeger in the 1940’s, Bob Dylan and Phil Ochs in the 1960’s, Utah Phillips and Fred Small in the 1980’s, and now Roy Zimmerman, Dave Lippman, Charlie King, the Prince Myshkins — and David Rovics, who’ll be bringing his songs and stage raps to San Diego Friday, September 8, 7 p.m. at the Sherman Heights Community Center, 2258 Island Avenue.

The Pride Beatings
Mark Gabrish Conlan/Zenger’s Newsmagazine,
On the surface, the reaction of the city and the police to the assaults that took place outside the Lesbian/Gay/Bisexual/Transgender Pride Festival July 30 seem fine; mayor Jerry Sanders made appropriately supportive remarks and three suspects were in custody within days of the incident. But a closer look reveals both city officials and members of the Queer community more concerned about damage control and protecting the profits of Queer businesses and the estimated $21 million the city takes in from the Pride events than in actually protecting the lives and safety of Queers in San Diego.

“Creating Chaos” Teach-In Explores Middle East
Mark Gabrish Conlan/Zenger’s Newsmagazine,
A teach-in called "Creating Chaos" in Golden Hill August 25, sponsored by the Middle East Cultural and Information Center (MECIC), featured three Arab-American speakers who challenged the view of Middle Eastern politics, especially the Israel-Lebanon war and the U.S. occupation of Iraq, commonly presented in the mainstream U.S. media. The speakers said the chaos created in the wake of the U.S. conquest of Iraq was deliberate and denounced the American peace movement for refusing to support the armed struggles of Hezbollah in Lebanon, Hamas in occupied Palestine and the resistance in Iraq.

Queer Demos Prioritize Busby Race
Mark Gabrish Conlan/Zenger’s Newsmagazine,
Despite her disappointing five-point loss to Republican lobbyist Brian Bilbray in the June 6 special election to fill the Congressional seat left vacant by Randy "Duke" Cunningham's bribery conviction, Francine Busby got a heroine's welcome from the predominantly Queer San Diego Democratic Club August 24. The club voted to make hers a priority campaign, which means they will make special efforts to mobilize volunteers and donate money for her rematch against Bilbray this Movember.

Rigging Elections in the USA
Myron (Mike) Stagman, PhD,
The USA has seen the last two presidential elections decided by voting fraud, each time wrongfully placing the Bush-Republican Far Right in the White House to perpetrate 9/11, wars, attacks on civil liberties & the environment, etc. 2008 is certain to be rigged also -- UNLESS we educate the uninformed Public to demand&enforce a fair election. And we urge Hillary Clinton to fight for this.

Remember the Hunger Strikers: Continue the Fight for Freedom
Janice Jordan - Peace and Feedom Party Candidate for Governor,
I returned last week from an eight day trip to Belfast, Northern Ireland. Every year the month of August in Belfast is filled with street festivals in many of the city's communities. This year is especially active, because 2006 marks the 25th Anniversary of the Ten Irishmen who gave their lives in the name of Irish freedom! The history of Irish liberation is a part of every day life. Support for the people of Palestine and Lebanon was visible in the pubs, on the streets and in the music halls. Recognizing and acting on the struggles of occupied and oppressed people around the world is something the Irish do without effort.

Alexander Propose Cutting Calif. Prison Cost
Stewart A. Alexander,
Widespread spending abuse in California’s prison system has more than doubled since Governor Schwarzenegger was elected in 2003 and the governor has failed to address a growing prison crisis. However the governor has been more concerned with building more prisons to deal with the state’s growing prison population; now over 172,000 inmates in a system designed to accommodate less than 100,000. Stewart Alexander, Candidate for California Lieutenant Governor with the Peace and Freedom Party, wants to cut the fat by $20 billion.

Queer Pride Events in San Diego
Mark Gabrish Conlan/Zenger’s Newsmagazine,
San Diego held its 37th annual LGBT [Queer] Pride celebration July 28-30, and while most of the speeches, parade floats and festival booths were assimilationist, parts of the celebration did hearken back to the radical, liberationist roots of Queer pride. Rev. Troy Perry, founder of the Metropolitan Community Church, dominated the July 28 rally, though his sermon-like speech which opened the July 28 pride rally was nearly equaled by the heartfelt poem read by San Francisco-based Queer African-American rapper Juba Kalamba as a memorial to his friend, AIDS activist Rocky Williams, who committed suicide July 24 after he became homeless when he could no longer afford San Francisco's astronomical rents.

Israel's Racism
Mark Gabrish Conlan/Zenger’s Newsmagazine,
Historically Jews have been among the world's victims of racism, but since the establishment of the state of Israel in 1948 the Jews who run Israel and support it in the rest of the world have turned into the perpetrators of racism. Israel's current attacks in Lebanon and Gaza show the essentially racist nature of Zionism — particularly its regard for Jews as a sort of "master race" and its belief that one Jewish life is worth hundreds or even thousands of Arab or Palestinian lives — and the striking similarities between how Israel treats its neighbors and how Nazi Germany treated the Jews.
