Queer Democrats Endorse Filner for Congress
Mark Gabrish Conlan/Zenger‘s Newsmagazine,

The predominantly Queer San Diego Democratic Club gave progressive Democratic Congressmember Bob Filner an early endorsement against moderate state legislator Juan Vargas, who will run against him in the 2006 Democratic primary. Filner, who participated in direct action for civil rights long before he sought elective office, told club members at their January 27 meeting that only a combination of aggressive street activism and involvement in electoral politics will enable progressives to defeat the Bush agenda.

Decoding Da Dubya Code
duko,

Revolutionaries, reporters and film crews assembled on
Friday morning for a "Press Conference and Anti-Inaugural
Banquet." It was held near Howard University at Café
Manowaj, a cool and funky hang-out run by a crew of radical South
Africans. Steaming breakfast dishes (named for people’s
heroes and historical highpoints) soon appeared. Indymedia and RW
reporters tended to order Amandla eggs. The Fox-5 TV guy was all
over the Paris Commune French Toast. (His footage of our
red-flag-filled cowboy-hat stomping made the 5 o’clock news
that night.)

Sunsara Taylor: Are there any born-agains in the
house who are deep into biblical armageddon prophesies? No? In that
case, I first need to first walk you all through my ‘Armageddon
Crash Course for post-Enlightenment Thinkers’....

At this very moment millions of people are being seduced into
going for simple, good-versus-evil answers to the agonizing and
growing complexities of the world. They are consumed with the coming
Judgment Day, the return of Jesus, Armageddon, the Rapture.

The Crusade for God and Global Conquest
duko,

“America, in this young century, proclaims liberty
throughout all the world, and to all the inhabitants
thereof.”

—George W. Bush, second
inaugural speech

“You think you know...but you have no idea...just what
Bush has in store for...you...us...the world...our
future!”

—Opening lines of the
RCP’s statement
"The Battle for the Future Will Be Fought from Here
Forward!"

George W. Bush swaggered to the podium of his inauguration and
said he would put before "every ruler and every nation" a
choice over whether to embrace his vision of "freedom."
(Kinda like how the Godfather makes you an "offer you
can’t refuse.")

And he said he was proclaiming the "calling of our
times"—which means (quite literally!) that Bush believes
his god has spoken to him and has assigned the U.S. and its soldiers
a divine mission. It was a vision of a global American crusade.

Hold Gonzales accountable for torture
Katelyn Sabochik,

http://www.humanrightsfirst.org/us_law/etn/video/index.htm Now is a critical moment in the campaign to hold Attorney General Nominee Alberto Gonzales accountable for his role in the abuses that have taken place at Abu Ghraib and other U.S, detention facilities. The Senate Judiciary Committee and possibly the entire Senate is expected to vote on Mr. Gonzales’ nomination later this week. For only the second time in their 27 year history, Human Right First is formally opposing a Presidential nomination.

And the police were afraid!
Rocky,

And the police were afraid! For the first time in over three decades I saw fear in the face of police as they confronted demonstrators - and it smelled good. The anti-inaguaration activities of January 20th was the tale of two marches: one staid, predictable; the other; spontaneous, pulsating, youthful energy that shifted beyond the politics of protest.

Street Party in Downtown San Diego
Plant a Bush in Texas.,

Need a shirt say more? The "Remember the Dead! Fight for the Living! Reclaim the Streets" rally snaked its way through the streets of downtown San Diego. The crowd numbered several hundred and pulsed with vibrant energy. Police followed the Anti-Bush Protestors rather than telling them where to go. The protest moved from Horton Plaza down Fourth Street then turned west by the Ralph's Market and the wound around on Market towards Fifth Street.

“Kerry Won,” Palast Tells Church Audience
Mark Gabrish Conlan/Zenger’s Newsmagazine,

Greg Palast (file photo) “I just want to warn you that there are cranks, kooks and crazies on the Internet who say John Kerry won the election — I know, because I wrote the article, ‘Kerry Won,’” American-born, British-based journalist Greg Palast told a capacity crowd of 700 at the main chapel of the First Unitarian-Universalist Church in Hillcrest January 17. Palast’s general theme — that U.S. democracy is a shambles, held hostage by willful Republican election officials and a complacent media — remains the same as it was when he emerged with tales of voter fraud in Florida in 2000. But in his fourth San Diego appearance, and his first since November 2, 2004, he had plenty more ammunition with which to make his case.

Counter-Inaugural Action Coverage on Indymedia
San Diego Indymedia,

In the days to come, the United States is going to see the coronation of a President who was elected with so much fraud that both the Senate and the House of Representatives contested his election. Regardless of the illegitimacy of the vote, millions of people absolutely reject the Bush administration and its policies, and many people reject the policies of the Democratic party and the entire system of representative democracy and capitalism.

On January 19th, the night before the inauguration, San Diego Indymedia will be throwing a counter-inaugural film night with footage from the RNC protests in New York in 2004 and with a short film from the 2000 Inaugural protests in DC. More info here.

We ask you to become the media in the coming days. Indymedia is a place for community access to media, and we can't do it without you! Please submit your stories, photos, video and audio to our website by clicking on the "Publish" button in the upper right hand corner, or just go here.

As the massive demonstrations, marches, direct actions and acts of civil disobedience unfold, you can follow them on indymedia in a variety of ways.

Check us.indymedia.org for news of the DC actions to stop the inauguration.

Watch this site to see the latest breaking news about the many actions happening here.

Listen to radioActiveradio.org for up to the second live coverage from the streets.

“Oil Factor” Explores Motives in Terror War
Mark Gabrish Conlan/Zenger's Newsmagazine,

French-born documentary filmmaker Gerard Ungerman brought his latest documentary, The Oil Factor: Behind the War on Terror, to the Peace and Democracy Task Force of the First Unitarian-Universalist Church in Hillcrest January 11 for a rare pre-theatrical release screening. The film, the latest of five Ungerman and his wife, Audrey Brohy, have produced, is a follow-up to their 2002 film The Hidden Wars of Desert Storm, containing footage (much of it shot by Ungerman and Brohy themselves) of life in Iraq just after the occupation as well as historical scenes and interviews.

Queer Leaders Keep Pushing Marriage Issue
Mark Gabrish Conlan/Zenger’s Newsmagazine,

Despite the overwhelming passage of initiatives in 13 states in the 2004 elections to ban legal recognition of marriage between same-sex couples — and, in eight of those states, the leaders of Equality California (EQCA), the state’s Queer rights lobby, have made it clear that marriage remains their number one legislative priority in California. At a January 7 “community summit” meeting at the San Diego Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual and Transgender Center, EQCA executive director Molly McKay urged support for the group’s bill to legalize same-sex marriage in California and discussed the proposed state constitutional amendment to ban all legal recognition of same-sex relationships.

Senators should object to Ohio vote
Jesse Jackson,

This Thursday in Washington Rep. John Conyers (D-Mich.), the senior minority member of the House Judiciary Committee, will formally object to the counting of the Ohio electoral vote in the 2004 presidential election. If any senator joins him, the counting of the vote is suspended and the House and the Senate must convene separately to hear the objections filed, and to vote on whether to accept them. The grounds for the objections are clear: The irregularities in the Ohio vote and vote count are widespread and blatant. If the Ohio election were held in the Ukraine, it would not have been certified by the international community.
