Same-Sex Marriage: New Civil Rights Moment
Mark Gabrish Conlan/Zenger's Newsmagazine,
California will be THE political battleground over same-sex marriage rights in 2006, said Evan Wolfson, former staff attorney with Lambda Legal Defense and currently executive director of Freedom to Marry, in a speech at the Center April 21. A marriage equality bill is being pushed through the California legislature this year, while radical-Right activists are seeking to put on the ballot an initiative that will not only block same-sex marriage in California but repeal the state's pioneering domestic partner law as well and leave same-sex couples in this state with no legal recognition or protection whatsoever.

San Diego Passes Living Wage Law, 5-4
Mark Gabrish Conlan/Zenger's Newsmagazine,
After organizing for nearly three years, supporters of a Living Wage Ordinance (LWO) in San Diego finally got the City Council to go along by a 5-4 vote after a six-hour hearing April 12. The ordinance will require that private contractors pay workers on city contracts at least $10 per hour if they also provide health benefits, or $12 an hour if they don't. As a compromise, supporters agreed to phase in the implementation of the ordinance over the next three years to give the city a chance to recover from its current financial crises first — but that didn't satisfy either the Council opponents or the speakers against it, many of whom relied on Libertarian arguments about the sanctity of the "free market."

After Nearly 4 Years of Struggle, Living Wage Passes
djette aporetics,
Congratulations! After nearly four years of hard work by the Living Wage Coalition, we won! Today at about 8pm the city council voted 5 to 4, Brian Maienschein, Jim Madaffer, Scott Peters and Mayor Dick Murphy dissenting (no surprise there) to adopt a Living Wage Ordinance for the city of San Diego. Two thousand workers and their families will be lifted out of poverty with passing of Living Wage Ordinance.
Brief Report from Students for Economic Justice
Protesters gathered today and the San Diego Concourse at Civic Center Plaza to demand a living wage ordinance in this years City Budget. The motley Coalition was comprised of a variety of organizations: San Diego Organizing Project, San Diego Democratic Project, Old Women's Project, NAACP, Environmental Health Coalition, American Friends Service Committee, Service Employees International Union, Interfaith Community for Worker Justice, International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers, ACORN, International Painters and Allied Trades, American Federation of State and County Municipal workers, Nurses Unite, Justice for Janitors, and United Food and Commercial Workers to name a few. The Living Wage Ordinance includes a wage increase to $10 per hour plus health care or an additional $2 for the health care differential.

Nader: "Towering Similarities" of Reps, Dems
Mark Gabrish Conlan/Zenger's Newsmagazine,
Author, veteran activist and three-time Presidential candidate Ralph Nader came to San Diego April 4 and spoke twice in one day — once at the World Beat Center in North Park and once in North County — as part of a nationwide tour to pay off his debts from his 2004 Presidential campaign. Though he spent much of his time attacking President Bush for leading an illegal war in Iraq and running the government for the benefit of his rich friends in corporate America, he also alluded to the “towering similarities” between the Republican and Democratic parties and defended his decision to run in 2004 as an independent candidate.

Mark this date in red on your calendars: TUESDAY, APRIL 12. The San Diego City Council is FINALLY scheduled to hear the badly needed Living Wage Ordinance at 2 p.m. at their regular meeting at city hall, 202 "C" Street. A rally to show community support before the Council meeting will be held at 12:30 p.m. at the Community Concourse outside city hall. Kudos to Councilmembers Michael Zucchet, Toni Atkins, Anthony Young and Donna Frye for signing the discharge petition that forced anti-labor Mayor Dick Murphy to put the Living Wage ordinance on the Council agenda.

Differences Between Republicans and Democrats
Mark Gabrish Conlan/Zenger’s Newsmagazine,
State Senator Joe Dunn (D-Orange County) spoke to the predominantly Queer San Diego Democratic Club March 24 and gave an impassioned analysis and call to action centering around the differences between the Democratic and Republican parties. He argued that the Democrats have historically stood for justice and economic independence, while the Republicans have stood for individual liberty and corporate dominance. Dunn said a second American revolution — a struggle likely to take decades — is needed to reverse the current Republican dominance and win back for Americans their political, religious and economic independence.

Mark Gabrish Conlan/Zenger's Newsmagazine,
Bill Fletcher, radical activist, former union organizer and AFL-CIO educational director and co-author of a recent "Nation" article calling for a more locally focused, grass-roots revival of the Rainbow Coalition, spoke on "Rebuilding the Left" at the World Beat Center in Balboa Park March 22. In an event sponsored by San Diego's Socialist Unity Network, Fletcher discussed the crisis of the Left and how only a willingness to build truly mass organizations and challenge the "master narrative" of the Right can help us overcome it.

Bev Harris Fights Election Fraud/Incompetence
Mark Gabrish Conlan/Zenger's Newsmagazine,
Bev Harris, principal author of "Black Box Voting" and founder of the blackboxvoting.org Web site, came to San Diego February 26 to speak at the First Unitarian-Universalist Church in Hillcrest. Her message: the American voting system is fundamentally flawed, as much if not more from sheer incompetence as deliberate attempts to rig outcomes. She also argues that contracting with private corporations to run elections equipment, especially on proprietary computer software, is inappropriate and runs counter to the principle of transparency that should apply in elections.

93 Percent Favor Limits on Civil Liberties
posted by Mark Gabrish Conlan,
A poll currently being taken on the PBS Web site reveals that, even among viewers of the "NOW" program (one of the few oases of genuine progressive politics on the "public" airwaves), an overwhelming 93 percent favor limits on civil liberties in the wake of 9/11 and the "war on terror." 82 percent said "we must use whatever means necessary to fight terrorism," and another 11 percent said, "yes, I'm willing to give up some freedoms for safety." Only 4 percent said, "no, safeguarding [civil liberties] is more important than ever." BE VERY AFRAID.
