Steve McWilliams While San Diego's Medical Marijuana/Cannabis Task Force is meeting monthly, supposedly to work out guidelines for how the city can deal with medical cannabis users who assert their rights under Proposition 215, police are stepping up enforcement actions against medical marijuana users. In mid-May narcotics detectives raided a community garden and destroyed medicinal plants, and on Memorial Day a medical cannabis user was threatened with arrest and then told the threat was a "joke." Task Force member Steve McWilliams demanded that narcotics division head Lt. Cesar Solis give up his advisory role to the group.

4-21-02 Earth Day Montage

Although I was not there I can not help but imagine the first Earth Day some 32 years ago. Tie-dyes and long hair, people fed up with the idea that only consumption and consumerism had a right to exist. People came together to take a stand for the protection of the Earth.

For those of us who fight for Peace, Justice and the Earth every day it is hard to imagine people who don't identify with the first Earth Day. It is also easy to be cynical about what Earth Day has become.

It is paradoxical that San Diego, with rapid expanding urbanism and a strong military background, could be the home to the largest Earth Day event in the country. (Is this true?) But after talking to several earnestly interested people while working one of the booths I began to realize you can't fault people for wanting to get involved.

So GET INVOLVED!

Demo Against Police Shootings
,

Maria Jimenez, widow of police shooting victim Here are links to stories by IMC journalists on the recent demonstration against police violence. Activist Christian Ramirez says, "It goes without saying that there should not be any contradiction between policing and human rights. Unfortunately, in this city, when you pump 39 bullets in a man’s body, that’s a far cry from the basic protection of human rights. We are asking the authorities, the district attorney, to seriously look into this issue, the shooting of people who might have some mental problems; who might just be asking for help."

Raza Rights Activist Arrested at Trolley Stop
,

Benjamin Prado

Raza Rights Coalition coordinator Benjamin Prado was arrested February 25 at the San Diego City College trolley station while attempting to videotape U.S. Border Patrol agents in action. His camera was confiscated and destroyed. The Border Patrol has been sending its agents onto the trolleys and racially profiling Latinos, many of them U.S. citizens, with questions about their immigration status. Latino organizations like the Raza Rights Coalition, D.U.R.O. (Developing Unity through Resident Organizing) and the Save Our Centro Coalition joined with the American Friends Service Committee to stage a protest rally February 26, and shortly thereafter Prado was released and all charges against him were dropped.

Below are links to stories on environmental organizing in Logan Heights, and to both an English and a Spanish version of a story of the "Metales y Derivados" disaster.
