Just two days before Christmas, the USDA admitted to the American public that the first case of a cow slaughtered with mad cow disease had surfaced in Washington. The USDA acted more like a beef PR firm than an agency meant to protect American consumers, moving quickly to assure the public that beef was safe. Dr. Michael Greger of the Organic Consumers Union knew better. Dr. Greger will be speaking here in San Diego as part of local Great American Meatout events. Read 
Keep the pressure on the City Council. Those fat-cats, and their bosses on the Chamber of Commerce, think low wages are great. Working families deserve a living wage.
The San Diego Latino Film Festival was established ten years ago as a student film festival focusing on works by Latinos and/or about the Latino Experience. Since that time, The San Diego Latino Film Festival has developed into one of the larger and well-respected Latino film festivals in the country. Over 50,000 people have attended during the past seven years and 450 films/videos from across Latin America and the United States have been screened.
Come by the San Diego Indymedia office at 2552 K St. on Friday from 4-6pm for our open house. A few members of the indymedia collective will be in the office, working on the Free Press, and you're welcome to come by! We'll have refreshments available. Also, you can check out our lending library and our video library and take home some radical independent media with you!

Tomorrow Californians vote on the Presidential Primary, a $15 billion bond, and several other primary elections. Locally San Diegans vote on Prop. A, an initiative to limit sprawl, the Mayoral Primary, and many other races.

The California Coastal Commission is meeting on Wedensday, February 18th at 12 noon at the Lodge at Torrey Pines in La Jolla to decide whether or not to allow the construction of the Triple Border Fence on the US/Mexico Border. You can attend the hearing and show your opposition!

Media Arts Center San Diego is proud to announce that our organization has recently been awarded a three-year capacity-building grant by Hispanics in Philanthropy.
MADRE, an international women's human rights organization, opposes the imposition of Islamic law on the people of Iraq by the US-appointed Interim Governing Council (IGC). Resolution 137 could give self-appointed religious clerics the authority to inflict grave human rights violations on Iraqi women, including denial of the rights to education, employment, freedom of movement and travel, property inheritance and custody of their children. Forced early marriage, polygamy, compulsory religious dress, wife beating, female genital mutilation, execution by stoning as punishment for female adultery and public flogging of women for disobeying religious rules could all be sanctioned if the Resolution is upheld.
Steven-Elliot Altman, whose book "Deprivers" recently made the L.A. Times best-sellers list, will be speaking in San Diego Tuesday, February 3, 7 p.m. at the War Memorial Building in Balboa Park. Intended as a metaphor for the AIDS epidemic, "Deprivers" is set in a near-future world where certain individuals have acquired the power to deprive others of certain senses by touching them.
The United States Court of Appeals for the Ninth Circuit ruled today that a San Diego police officer who was fired for selling pornographic videotapes, showing himself wearing a police uniform and masturbating, may sue the Police Department and City for basing its decision to fire him on expressive activity.
