Teamsters Strike at Coca-Cola, Intl Day of Action against Coke
PR Newswire and FSRN c/o lotus,

Teamsters in San Diego, California, who produce and distribute Coca-Cola products for Coca-Cola Enterprises went on strike today to protest the company's demand to dramatically increase workers' health care costs."Coke's greed has put nearly 500 San Diego families in jeopardy," said Jack Cipriani, International Vice President and Director of the Teamsters Brewery & Soft Drink Workers' Conference. "It is unconscionable that Coke would turn on the very people who work so hard to make the company the number one selling soft drink brand in the United States. Paying for those health benefits would have cost CCE less than what the company earned in 17 minutes last year."

The World Social Forum declared tomorrow, the 22nd of July, as an International Day of Action against Coca Cola. Organizers are encouraging schools and organizations to stop stocking coke machines and are asking individuals to refrain from buying Coca Cola products. In the US the campaign to boycott ‘Killer Coke’ is spreading across college campuses and communities around the country. The boycott was launched last year by the Colombian food and beverage workers’ union, SINALTRAINAL, to bring attention to the murders of Coca-Cola trade unionists there that they believe were executed by company-hired death squads in a country often described as the world’s most dangerous place for labor activists.

Greenpeace Continues its Resistance to Old-Growth Logging
lotus,

Umpqua National Forest, Ore - Greenpeace continued to spotlight destructive logging practices on U.S. public lands today, this time in Oregon's Umpqua National Forest, administered by the U.S. Forest Service. Four activists attached themselves to a three-ton cargo container placed in the middle of active logging operations at the site of the "Peanuts" timber sale, where felling and hauling of old-growth trees is underway by the D.R. Johnson company. Surrounded by stumps, the bright yellow container, which reads "Bush's Forest Destruction Stops Here" is the latest staging ground for Greenpeace's campaign calling for a moratorium on commercial logging of ancient forest on public lands.

Stop Israeli Offensive in Gaza
ADC c/o lotus,

electronicintifada.net UPDATE :: emergency demonstrations - Friday 5/21 and Saturday 5/22

Washington, DC, May 18 -- The American-Arab Anti-Discrimination Committee (ADC) is urging its members and supporters to ask the United States government to intervene to end the assault on Rafah refugee camp and other areas in the occupied Gaza Strip by the Israeli government of Prime Minister Ariel Sharon.

According to press accounts, at least 15 Palestinians were killed by Israeli occupation forces this morning, including three children, among them a 13-year-old boy and his 16-year-old sister. On Friday, Israeli military bulldozers destroyed about 200 homes in Rafah, bringing the total number of Rafah homes destroyed in the past three years to 1,200.

Several groups are having an emergency meeting tonight at the IAC center to plan an emergency protest either later this week or this weekend. Stay tuned for more information.

Feds harass SD activists again!

UPDATE: Solidarity Action at Friday, 6:30PM, on 6th and Laurel
 http://sandiego.indymedia.org/en/2004/05/104242.shtml

This is a important call to action. If you can or will help with friday let us know.

This last Weekend in LA I helped to co-organize a conference called Liberation weekend. The message of the conference could easily be boiled down into the need for serious movement aimed at revolutionary change. I am very surprised that the very idea is so frightening to the agents of the state I have come to learn that it is. Several of the organizers and attendees have been arrested since the conference started on Saturday. Several attendees of the conference have been “tailed”.

US Torture Exposed, The People Respond
lotus,

In response to a report of prisoner torture and murder inside prisons across Iraq, which was leaked to the media recently, people are standing up across the globe to decry the US and UK's use of torture. The graphic images have been shown on media outlets across the country, but some are still claiming that they're being censored.

As the evidence of torture grows, many are calling for Donald Rumsfeld's resignation. In a senate hearing where Rumsfeld was questioned today, a group of concerned people stood up and chanted "Fire Rumsfeld" while holding a banner saying the same.

Independent contractors have been implicated in the toture as well, creating a growing discussion fo the private war going on in Iraq. A demonstration of around 100 people was held in front of one of the contractor's, Titan Corporation's, headquarters, as well as a press conference. More demonstrations are planned.

Amid all this, there is still very little discussion in the media about the fact that this type of behaviour is taught, expected, and awarded in the military; and that this kind of torture has been going on in Guantanamo Bay for years. As in Guantanamo, a recent Democracy Now show discussed how in Iraqi prisions "there was no process for determining who was innocent".
