Our worst fears: Vote Tampering
By entering a 2-digit code in a hidden location, a second set of votes is created in the Diebold central tabulator, a program installed in 1,000 locations, which controls both paper ballots and touch-screens, each system handling up to a million votes at a time. After invoking the 2-digit trigger, this second set of votes can be changed so that it no longer matches the correct set of votes. The voting system will then read the totals from the bogus vote set. It takes only seconds to change the votes, and to date not a single location in the U.S. has implemented security measures to fully mitigate the risks. It was designed and tested over a series of a dozen version adjustments, and has been in place for four years.

The World Says No to War!
"Every two days we spend 1 billion dollars in Iraq... Imagine what that money could do for the causes we believe in.... What they are doing with our money is criminal." Bob Filner was one of several powerful speakers at Sunday's "The World Says No to War" Demonstration in Balboa Park. About 500 San Diegans took part in the demonstration organized in solidarity with the Anti-war March in New York. The march following the speeches was loud and invigorating. As we marched we reminded on lookers that the war is not over yet and there is still a lot of peace work to be done.

Calling on voters to remove George W. Bush from the White House on November 2nd, speakers from the San Diego chapter of Military Families Speak Out, Veterans for Peace, Iraq Veterans Against the War, American Friends Service Committee, and Project for Youth and Non-Military Opportunities (Project YANO) came together in Chicano Park Sunday, August 22. Approximately 100 people were on hand for the event, organized by the San Diego chapter of Military Families Speak Out.

Over 250 San Diegans turned out Thursday evening, August 12, for a rally and march at the Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transgender Community Center to protest that day’s ruling by the California Supreme Court invalidating over 4,000 marriages between same-sex couples in San Francisco. The court ruled unanimously that San Francisco Mayor Gavin Newsom had exceeded his authority by ordering city staff to issue marriage licenses to same-sex couples between February 12 and March 12 of this year.
A multi-agency task force shut down a NYC Indymedia video team benefit late Saturday night, sparking complaints that the action was politically motivated. "I don't think every single department showing up here was a coincidence," said Brandon Jourdan, a video team organizer. "But maybe it was or maybe it was not. People will have to decide for themselves."
The California Supreme Court has ruled against the City and County of San Francisco and anulled thousands of marriages. Today's (8/12/04) ruling only addresses the issue of whether San Francisco's Mayor Newsom went beyond his authority in issuing gender neutral marriage licenses.
