New Features on San Diego Indymedia!
san diego indymedia,

We've done a ton of work in the last few weeks to make San Diego Indymedia more usable and more accessible, as well as to make it easier for people to get involved with us.

The main feature we've added is translations. Now, in the left column, there is a language selection box. When choosing Español, you'll be presented with our site en Español, including all buttons and forms. If you find an error in our translation, please email it to us. Also, we added the "Add A Translation" feature so that every story has an "Add A Translation" button. This way, people can easily add translations to stories so that when a user goes to the spanish section of the site, the articles are en Español also.

What does this mean? We need translators! Are you bilingual? Are you interested in helping us tear down the borders that separate our community? Are you dedicated to challenging racism by building understanding? If so, email the new San Diego Indymedia Translation group at imc-sd-translation at lists.indymedia.org .

Boxer “Seriously Considers” Election Challenge
Mark Gabrish Conlan,

U.S. Senator Barbara Boxer is “seriously considering” joining a challenge by several members of the House of Representatives to the results of the 2004 Presidential election, her press secretary, David Sandretti, said Wednesday morning, January 5. Local activists in San Diego held sit-ins at Boxer’s office Monday and Tuesday, January 3 and 4, to persuade her to join the challenge.

Over 200 turn out to Demand that San Diego Count Every Vote
lotus at indymedia dot org,

An energetic, diverse crowd of over 200 people turned out Sunday to demand that every vote be counted, in the Mayoral and Presidential elections. One speaker mentioned how he had volunteered for the recount and for ballots containing only an X or a check for Dick Murphy, the votes were counted and filled in by vote counters, while for the 5,547 votes containing the name "Donna Frye" and no bubble, the votes were not counted. Dick Murphy's victory was with a margin of 2,108 votes.

The speakers also talked about how the bubble law is a state law that's being used to override local law, and how the city council has the ability to "become a judge" and count every vote. Also, a petition was passed around for the local election and also to demand that Barbara Boxer be the one Senator to contest the electoral college vote which is to be certified on January 6th. A number of members of the House of Representatives have agreed to help contest the vote, but no Senator has come forward, just as in 2000.

More info at Indybay.org | Contest The Vote.org | VOTERR.org

UPDATE: 1/3 5:36pm - A sit-in took place at Barbara Boxer's office to demand that she block the certification of the Electoral College votes. This action will continue tomorrow. More here

At The Peace Rally
Drew Searing,

A guy at the Peace Rally who didn’t even know I was a writer handed me a four-by-five-inch leaflet and said,

“Write about your experience today and post it on our website. I encourage all writers who have lost their creativity, to begin writing.”

How did he know that my creativity hadn’t been challenged for sometime now?

How did he know that I have not felt the urge to write about anything since the experience in New York left me as empty as the giant hole left by the events of 9/11? With a president not elected by the majority, having destroyed what little faith I had left in this country; with a nation full of couch clones eager to believe the stupidest of lies from an obviously corrupt administration; upon seeing my home state of California – having been the last bastion of democracy in the U.S. – sabotaged by a right-wing-funded, bad acting, Nazi superhero, it has been difficult to muster any creativity to write, compose music, or enjoy any other artistic endeavor I normally peacefully pursue.

CCDC stops homeless feeedings for holidays
lotus,

The Centre City Development Corp., San Diego's downtown redevelopment agency, had notified the Salvation Army this month that it needed a conditional-use permit to continue serving meals.

In response to the agency, and to concerns about loitering and littering outside its offices on E Street, the charity decided to drop the religious services where breakfast and dinner were offered Monday through Thursday. The last services were Dec. 14. That suspension prompted yesterday's vigil.

Votergate is in full effect, nationally and at home
lotus,

RALLY FOR COUNTING ALL THE VOTES
Thursday Dec. 23, 2004 2:00PM
202 'C' Street San Diego Downtown Civic Center Plaza.
Come out and support the 5,000+ voters that have been disinfranchised by a bubble. More than 5,000 voters can't be ignored!
From the Voters for Donna Frye and the Supporters of Democracy

From Twin Cities IMC:Stolen Election-Lost Democracy: Report From Ohio

The evidence is mounting that this election, just as the last one, had been stolen. What makes this one even more stunning is the brazen nature in which it had been stolen. Add to this the nature of how it had been stolen, with the possible use of manipulated machines as well as the silence from the media and the leadership of the Democratic Party. Many observers have noted the common feeling that the democratic process is slipping away right in front of us.

A Re-Invitation to the San Diego Community
San Diego Indymedia,

The San Diego Independent Media Center (SDIMC) is a grassroots organization committed to using media production and distribution as a tool for promoting social and economic justice in San Diego County. It is our goal to give voice to those people under-represented in the mainstream media. We intend to illuminate and analyze local and global issues that are affected by the increasing corporate domination of American society and the subsequent erosion of democracy. We seek to generate alternatives to the current biases in the corporate media and to contribute to the development of an equitable and sustainable society.

We fully recognize that to achieve these goals, it is essential to work closely with the San Diego activist community. Because the corporate media operates under a veneer of objectivity, subjects and persons, if covered at all, are actually presented in an "as told by the media" manner. We will work with and within movements for social justice in San Diego to support them in the telling of their own stories, which will further the goals of those movements.

Further, we fully recognize that the goal of representing people who are under-represented can only be accomplished in a just way by having members of under-represented communities in our organization, creating media and participating in our decision making process.

Several of the protests signs added a international perspective by referring to the voter activism expressed in the Ukraine.
