Multiple Marches Converge Against War
from the South Bay,

From National City to Oceanside, from Chicano Park to Balboa Park, a diverse group of San Diegans marched through their own communities on March 19th to say, once more, no to war and no to occupation. The Resistencia Estudiantil march started at 7am at Southwestern, going through National City, Barrio Logan, Chicano Park, Sherman Heights, City College, and eventually, Balboa Park. The Code Pink March came from Oceanside, starting three days in advance and keeping it strong the whole way. At 2pm they all converged at the San Diego Coalition for Peace and Justice's massive Anti-War rally.

Farmworkers Take Down Taco Bell
austin imc,

"The consumer boycott is the only open door in the dark corridor of nothingness down which farmworkers have had to walk for many years. It is a gate of hope through which they expect to find the sunlight of a better life for themselves and their families" (Cesar Chavez)

On March 8, after nearly four years of struggle and amidst the momentum of the 2005 Taco Bell Truth Tour, farmworkers from the Coalition of Immokalee Workers (CIW scored a decisive victory in their national boycott of Taco Bell. Caving under the weight of an intense grassroots campaign, the fast-food giant has agreed to work with the Florida-based farmworker organization to improve the wages and working conditions of farmworkers in the Florida tomato industry by paying a penny-per-pound surcharge demanded by the workers. The farmworkers' sub-poverty wages have been stagnant and declining in real terms since 1978.

"This is an important victory for farmworkers, one that establishes a new standard of social responsibility for the fast-food industry and makes an immediate material change in the lives of workers. This sends a clear challenge to other industry leaders," said Lucas Benitez, a member of the Coalition of Immokalee Workers. The CIW's precedent-setting victory is also an important step forward for student/youth, global justice, and poor peoples' movements throughout the U.S. who have worked in solidarity with the farmworkers, forcing the world's largest restaurant corporation (Yum! Brands, Taco Bell's parent company) to accept responsibility for conditions in its supply chain.

As planned, farmworkers and their allies will gather in Louisville, KY on March 11th and 12th to celebrate the victory and chart the next steps in the movement to end sweatshops in the fields. The battle is won; the war continues.

International Women's Day in San Diego, March 8th
imcista,

The International Women's Day, or International Woman's Day, is on 8 March every year. It is a major day of global celebration for the economic, political and social achievements of women. Amongst other relevant historic events, it commemorates the Triangle Factory Fire (New York, 1911), where over 140 women lost their lives.

The idea of having an international women's day was first put forward at the turn of the 20th century amid rapid world industrialization and economic expansion that led to protests over working conditions. Women from clothing and textile factories staged one such protest on March 8th, 1857 in New York City. The garment workers were protesting what they saw as very poor working conditions and low wages. The protesters were attacked and dispersed by police. These women established their first labour union in the same month two years later. More protests followed on March 8th in subsequent years, most notably in 1908 when 15,000 women marched through New York City demanding shorter hours, better pay and voting rights. Even so, the first International Women's Day was observed on 28 February 1909 in the United States following a declaration by the Socialist Party of America. In 1910 the first international women's conference was held in Copenhagen by the Socialist International and an 'International Women's Day' was established. The following year, IWD was marked by over a million people in Austria, Denmark, Germany and Switzerland. However, just six days later, the Triangle Factory Fire in New York City killed over 140 garment workers. A lack of safety measures was blamed for the high death toll. Furthermore, on the eve of World War I, women across Europe held peace rallies on March 8, 1913.

Demonstrations marking International Women's Day in Russia proved to be the first stage of the Russian Revolution. Following the October Revolution, the Bolshevik feminist Alexandra Kollontai persuaded Lenin to make it an official holiday, and during the Soviet period it continued to celebrate "the heroic woman worker". The day remains an official holiday in Russia, and is observed by men congratulating women (any woman) and giving them gifts. In the West, International Women's Day was commemorated during the 1910s and 1920s, but dwindled. It was revived by the rise of feminism in the 1960s. In 1975, the United Nations began sponsoring International Women's Day.

Now is the Time to Stop the Border Fence!
stop the triple fence,

Here is some of the list traffic from  http://groups.yahoo.com/group/borderfencesolution/ and other emails today. It is unfortunate that everyone is so snowed about the need for a triple fence to stop terrorists. We have to get the Senate to say no to the bill that would exempt this fence from environmental laws.

Border Fence in the News - Stop the Fence!
no borders,

This morning on NPR was I happy to hear another story about the Border Fence. The recent House passage of a bill to exempt the construction of the Border Fence from environmental laws is ridiculous and deserves national attention. Hopefully as people across the country realize the implications of putting fear above environmental preservation they will try to get this bill stopped in the Senate.

Fighting for Autonomy: Tijuana, Sonora, Buenos Aires
js,

Protest and Fundraisers
In support of Zapatista Villages in Sonora and Tijuana

In Mexico many have been the attempts to restore the belongings of land and freedom for the indigenous people. One of the accomplishments of the Mexican Revolution of 1910, was the Agrarian Reform Law, which was established in the Constitution of 1917. This law provided the right for the peasant and indigenous population to owe communal land called “ejidos” As of 1994, the government of Mexico has taken land away from the people to sell to large corporations for the construction of Maquiladoras, where cheap labor and no effective environmental laws only beneficiate the capitalist.
Many “ejidos” have chosen the route of resistance. They resist to be treated as items in a supermarket. They resist seeing their land turned into a jails of robots.

Unfortunatelly the resistance has left many people living in fear, others have been arrested, many have been threatened and abused. We have to unite our voice to theirs, our struggle to theirs because their liberation is our liberation.

Towards a Critical Analysis of Media EmergenC
sd indymedia, prometheus radio project, rAsD,

From October 6th-9th, as the National Association of Broadcasters was
holding their annual Radio Road Show in San Diego, a group of media
activists converged to try to illuminate what is wrong with the corporate
media and to strengthen independent, community autonomous media. This
convergence was called the Media emergenC, highlighting the two themes of
emergency and emergence. With 4 days of talks, film screenings, marches,
panels, forums and independent media making, the media activists, mostly
composed of members of San Diego Indymedia and radioActive sanDiego, but
including media makers from as far away as New York and Philadelphia,
tried to confront the NAB as had been done in many other cities, but also
to challenge the independent media movement and push it forward.

We've written this self-critical document in the hope of creating more
critical dialogue within the Indymedia community and the independent media
movement. It is our hope that people will read this, give us feedback and
make more documents like this critiquing their own events and actions and
circulate those for discussion as well. We hope that this can be read and
discussed at the upcoming Indyconference in Texas this month
( http://www.indyconference.org/).
