San Diego Opens New Fronts in War on Homeless
Rocky Neptun,
The City of San Diego continues to expand its human rights assults against the homeless as 3 politicians join the war wagon. City Council members and the City Attorney are escalating San Diego's War on the Homeless.
Two new fronts were recently opened on the city's ongoing persecution of the homeless. San Diego police officers from the Eastern Division, with shock troops from the downtown precincts, joined city bureaucrats, probably armed with box cutters, who invaded the San Diego riverbed area, south of Mission Valley to hunt down poor human beings like wild animals.

Breaking News from The Student Walk Out
Djette y Lotus,
About 350 students held a rally at City College on April 20th to protest the proposed budget cuts being put forth by the Governor. After the rally, they held a spirited, loud march wiht drums, noisemakers and booming music through downtown to the State Department building where the Governor's office is. After rallying at the State Department building, the group began to march back. Present were supportive faculty members, organizers, college students and high school students from SDSU, UCSD, City College, Miramar College, Southwestern College, SD High and more. A breakaway march of about 50-75 people split off from the main group, outside of the lines of motorcycle cops and horse cops in riot gear. After an intense confrontation where the police pushed people, hit them with their motorcycles and bicycles, threatened them with batons and brought out a visciously barking police dog, the breakaway still refused to return to the main group. Although they tried to move their march to the sidewalk, the police still refused to let them go and tried to negotiate the route. After the students refused negotiations, the police finally gave up and let the march continue on the sidewalk back to city college. Numerous attempts were made to retake the streets, but the police used their horses to push people back onto the street. Fighting for Free Radio in Mexico City
Onto and Kev - imc reporters in Mexico City,
Radio Zapote, a free radio transmitting from the National School of Anthropology and History (ENAH) in Mexico City, received word from a school official that they were to be evicted in two weeks. The news came as a surprise to members of the radio's collective, who, in constant dialogue with the school, were only incidentally informed of the intention of eviction. Tuesday, Thomas Stanford, a professor at the ENAH who has been harassing Radio Zapote for years, arrived in the radio's space with an engineer to take measurements for his furniture, as if the radio was on the way out.

Lost Film Festival in SD Sunday!
sd indymedia,
San Diego Indymedia and Voz Alta will be hosting the Lost Film Festival on Sunday.
This is a last minute announcement for an awesome event. Tell your friends! Its gonna rock!
Sunday, April 17th, 6pm
Voz Alta, 1544 Broadway
LOST FILM FEST is a laugh-a-riot event with equal emphasis on both "laugh" and "riot." Focusing on pranks vs. corporations and government institutions. If George W. Bush makes you puke and you dig pie fights with cops, riot footage, and culture jamming, you'll love the punk rock urgency of the Lost Film Fest and its celebration of media archaeology and illegal art.
Lost Film Fest from West Philadelphia is a traveling multimedia spectacle incorporating live performance and video. It's a truly independent, anti-authoritarian, anti-corporate grassroots DIY media extravaganza hosted by Festival Director Scott Beibin (Bloodlink Records, Evil Twin Booking.) Beibin travels the globe telling stories and spinning movies like a DJ using a video projector, dvd player, and backpack filled with goodies. The roadshow incorporates a sexy, smash-it-up, radical anti-capitalist anti-globalization perspective. Truly "Too Hot for TV" since 1999, the LFF has featured scathing and hilarious social commentary in the form of narrative shorts, documented pranks, hot amateur protest footage, and video re-mixes. Additionally there is an annual weeklong event held in Philly, and guerilla visits to Sundance, SXSW, and Cannes. This jam is about smashing the illusions cast by Hollywood, the Pentagon, and FOX

Service, Technical Workers Strike at UCSD
lotus at indymedia d0t org,
AFSCME went on stike today at UCSD and at all UC Campuses Across the state. UPTE, UAW came out to the support rallies. UPTE's contract says that they are entitled to strike in support, so as to not cross the picket lines. Many UAW teaching assistants are not working today. Some professors have cancelled their classes today. Some UPTE workers did not go to work as well.
The UCSD administration sent out a threatening email saying that the strike is illegal and that UPTE can't strike. Some workers were intimidated by this email and they did go to work. The AFSCME strike is for a 24 hour period. The university tried to find scab worker replacements for the day, but they were having trouble getting people to do that.
Service workers are janitorial, bus drivers, and many others.
Campus spending hundreds of millions of dollars uc wide. but they refuse 5% raise.
About 1000 workers on strike at ucsd. about 300 people at 4pm solidarity rally. Students spoke about how they appreciate the work being done by the service workers and how they feel in solidarity with them. union reps spoke at the rally as well.
People are upbeat about the strike having an effect on the negotiations. They want to send a message to the administrators that they're going to do what it takes to get a living wage. People are marching down one of the major streets in UCSD. Energy level is high. There are about 300 people there.
Corporate media presence is very light. Up to 6 officers were seen at campus rally, close to attendees.

Today at about 8pm the city council voted 5 to 4, Brian Maienschein, Jim Madaffer, Scott Peters and Mayor Dick Murphy dissenting (no surprise there) to adopt a Living Wage Ordinance for the city of San Diego. Two thousand workers and their families will be lifted out of poverty with passing of Living Wage Ordinance.
Brief Report from Students for Economic Justice
Protesters gathered today and the San Diego Concourse at Civic Center Plaza to demand a living wage ordinance in this years City Budget. The motley Coalition was comprised of a variety of organizations: San Diego Organizing Project, San Diego Democratic Project, Old Women's Project, NAACP, Environmental Health Coalition, American Friends Service Committee, Service Employees International Union, Interfaith Community for Worker Justice, International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers, ACORN, International Painters and Allied Trades, American Federation of State and County Municipal workers, Nurses Unite, Justice for Janitors, and United Food and Commercial Workers to name a few. Interfaith Committee for Worker Justice c/o sd indymedia,

A Rising Movement Against The MinuteMen and the Border
lotus for sd indymedia,
UPDATE 4/5/2005 9:00AM - Press conference today and National Days of Action to stop REAL ID
What better place than Tombstone, Arizona, where gun-toting actors dressed like sheriffs and outlaws keep the nostalgia of the Wild West alive, to be the focal point of yet another vigilante convergence. The Minuteman Project, as it is called, is being organized by two of southern Arizona's most notorious and outspoken border vigilantes: Chris Simcox and Jim Gilchrist. Their plan is to place "observers" every quarter mile along a 20-mile stretch of border from Douglas to the San Pedro River during the month of April.
However, their actions will not go unopposed. Legal observers are being trained to watch over and document the Minutemen. Counter protests, vigils and other border activities are also planned to take place throughout April. ( April Unity Events ) In San Diego and Tijuana, on April 2nd, 2005, numerous organizations including the Border Angels, FIST ( Fight Imperialism, Stand Together), the Brown Berets, Code Pink, and the ORGANIC collective held a march and a rally at the US/Mexico border, the site of the construction of the Triple Border Fence. This rally was against HR 418, against the Triple Border Fence and against the Minutemen. Between 50 and 75 people were in attendance for the 1.5 mile march, followed by a rally on both sides of the fence. In addition, plans for borderHack 2.005 were announced for this summer.
As the MinuteMen project in Arizona takes the media spotlight, Congress is quietly trying to roll back 30 years of environmental regulations and create a buffer zone of martial law along the borders of the US. HR 418 recently passed in the House and is currently being fast tracked through the Senate. This law would completely exempt any project to build fences or roads in the region of the borders of the US from all environmental laws. This would include the border with Canada as well as the border with Mexico. Biotech Conferences in SD and Philly
sd indymedia,
| San Diego is such a huge hotbed of biotech, people really need to start a movement against it right here!
"San Diego biotechnology executives will gather Tuesday for the annual CalBio life science conference with R&D on their minds: regulators and dough." - a recent Union Tribune article |
From June 19 to 22, 2005, a powerful lobbying consortium, the Biotechnology Industry Organization (BIO), is holding its annual international convention in downtown Philadelphia. And while more than 10,000 biotech industry leaders gather to plan the expansion of their corporate control over life itself, grassroots activists will once again converge to confront them and expose the truth that the experimental science they call “innovation” really spells “Biodevastation” for human health, food security, local autonomy and biodiversity.
