Human Rights Defenders Found Guilty
Corrie Ort,

Erik Olson, Kevin Nash, and David Rodriguez-Acevedo were found guilty of targeted residential picketing of the mayor’s house in San Diego. The three men are part of an organization called the Invest-In Project which works to call attention to, and eventually change, human rights abuses. They model their activism on the sit-ins of the Civil Rights Movement.

County Office of Education awards Pro-MinuteMen Film
lotus,

The San Diego county Office of Education conducts an annual award called the iVIE. The iVIE is intended to "increase student achievement through visual literacy". The San Diego county office of education includes the County Board of Education, the County Superintendent of Schools and more.

This year, the SD Coutny Office of Education decided to award a film called "Invasion", a pro minutemen film about why they must arm themselves to defend against migrant people. The student who won accepted his award at the red carpet event, where students of many different cultures and ethincities were in attendance, wore a shirt that said "proud to be a vigilante" and was met with a round of applause.

Why is the San Diego office of education doing so much to promote violence against migrant people?

"Why is it media reform? it should be media revolution!" Protest Tells CACI "You're Not Welcome in SF"
indybay.org,

Torturers out of San Francisco! On Monday, May 16th, a protest was held to launch a campaign to get CACI International to leave San Francisco. Campaign organizers say that CACI employees were involved in the Iraq torture scandals, and that the company provided many interrogators who worked at the Abu-Ghraib prison. CACI's vice president and other top executives were in San Francisco to make a presentation at an investors' conference at the Westin St. Francis Hotel in Union Square. Several people from the campaign to shut down CACI's San Francisco office attempted to meet with the CACI officials, but they were removed from the hotel.

Jumpstarting the San Diego Free Press
sd indymedia,

We are restarting the San Diego Free Press after a long vacation in which we were up to our necks in other mediums. There is a ton of news of critical importance happening here in San Diego on a daily basis, and we're going to try to take our media making efforts out of the ether and back into the physical realm. We also plan to have lots of content in the new Free Press en español, since we have been doing serious work on translation for our website. We see the Free Press newspaper as an opportunity to both outreach to people who aren't already involved with movements for social justice and also as a way to reach communities which don't have much access to the internet and computers.

To do this, we need your help with editing, layout, translation, story and art submissions, brain power, donations, moral support, vegan cookies and anything else you want to help with!

Please join us at our next meeting to work on putting this issue together! The meeting will be Tuesday, May 17th at 7:30pm.

Pablo Paredes Puts the War on Trial
lotu5 for sd indymedia,

. UPDATE: Pablo Sentenced to 2 months of confinement, 3 months of labor, a sentence so minor as to be without precedent for a court martial.

On May 11th, 2005, Pablo Paredes was found guilty of missing movement. The unauthorized absence charge was dismissed. Sentencing continues today, May 12th in the court martial.

BUT, DURING THE PRE-SENTENCING PHASE...Marjorie Cohn made ABSOLUTE MINCEMEAT OUT OF THE PROSECUTION!

So much so that the military judge in the court martial said, "I BELIEVE THE GOVERNMENT JUST PROVED THAT ANY SERVICEMEMBER HAS REASONABLE CAUSE TO BELIEVE THAT THE WARS IN YUGOSLAVIA, AFGHANISTAN AND IRAQ WERE ILLEGAL"

Read more from the court martial attendees

As his court martial took place, outside around 50 supporters performed act 1 of the 3 act play "Put the War on Trial", which Pablo wrote. Following that they marched through Logan Heights and received a warm reception. One person driving by said "Thank you for coming to our neighborhood! Gracias para venir a nuestra barrio!" The march ended at the gates of the 32nd naval base where supporters held banners over the bridge, rallied on the sidewalk and showed their support for Pablo and everyone with the courage to resist this illegal and immoral war all day, in the unrelentingly hot sun. Support events will continue today with act 2 of Put the War on Trial and a film night fundraiser.

Support Pablo, Kevin, GI Resisters & END THE WAR
David Solnit,

Pablo Paredes According to the Pentagon, 6,000 U.S. soldiers are currently listed as "deserters," having been AWOL for at least 30 days. People are supporting Kevin and Pablo and the thousands of other public and (mostly) private resisters because their courageous stand against the war--- actually upholding international law-- deserves our support. The other reason to support Kevin and Pablo is that GI resistance has the power to stop the war and occupation in Iraq, and check the reckless policies of empire behind it.

Come out for 3 days of events to support war resisters!

MinuteMen Wrap Up
SD Indymedia, AZ Indymedia,

claudia martinez cardeo - injured while crossing the border to get to her kids The rugged Arizona desert dominated the media spotlight throughout April when hundreds of Minuteman Project volunteers organized to close a 23-mile stretch of the border with Mexico with 24-hour monitoring and at times, aiding US Border Patrol by apprehending undocumented migrants. In response, the American Civil Liberties Union organized volunteer legal observers to monitor and document all interactions between the MMP "vigilantes" and immigrants. While the Minuteman Project was quick to declare the project a success, US Border Patrol believes that migration was just deterred to other parts of Arizona where migrants now face greater danger: a harsher terrain and more miles to walk under the inclement desert sun. Border activist and humanitarian groups chose to ignore the MMP and rather organized a month of unity events, celebrating the borderlands.

In May, California Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger said that the MinuteMen were doing a "terrific" job and proposed that California fund its own state border police unit. In response the MinuteMen Project announced plans to come to California in June. Also in May, the SWARM the MinuteMen project was announced. Meanwhile, the REAL ID act is set to pass the House and Senate and planning continues on borderHack 2.005.

Martial Law on the Border
Sean Mariano Garcia,

This Wednesday, we got final language from the House and Senate negotiators working on the Iraqi War Funding bill regarding their decisions on REAL ID. By and large, they adopted REAL ID in its
entirety.

REAL ID now provides the Secretary of Homeland Security with the Authority to waive any legal regulation that would impede the construction of border barriers, fences, or roads. This construction would only be contestable in the courts on constitutional grounds.

With this bill, we are not only seeing the steamrolling over 30 years of environmental regulations, but also the assurance that more people will die crossing the border thanks to the US's failed trade policies.

The Man Under the Abu Graib Hood
lotus,

Ali al-Shalal is a name you've never heard. But you know him: He's the man wearing the black hood and gown, standing on a box, with wires attached to his outstreched arms. And for the record, the wires were live. Now, he's working for justice, and the rights of other Iraqi prisoners of the U.S. military.

So far, he has taken 10 prisoners to Amman where they have met US lawyers who are pressing a class-action suit in a US federal court against [San Diego Based Corporations] Titan and CACI, with the US military named as a co-conspirator.

Arizona Dream
Rene Flores,

jesus - lost in the memories that flood back in with our questions A team of journalists from Radioactive San Diego and San Diego Indymedia are sent to the Arizona/Sonora border region, where a group of armed volunteers known as the Minutemen Project has decided to camp by the border to stop the flow of undocumented migrants. During their first night in Douglas, Arizona, the San Diego journalists get chased down by the Border Patrol. Crossing the border into Agua Prieta, Sonora, a former coyote relates to them his life story and concludes: “risks are big, but necessity is bigger.” At the border, they meet Jim Gilchrist, the first Minutemen, who reveals he opposes “powerful corporate enterprise,” considers Mexican migrants to be “economic refugees,” and that he babysits his Mexican grandchild every Sunday.
