San Ysidro Says No to the Minutemen!
Jonathan,

Saturday protesters gathered in the streets of San Ysidro to raise their voices against the minutemen and groups like the minutemen. Protesters shouted in support of the rights of all people. These people came to the streets to let everyone - from bystanders, to Schwarzenegger - know that our state and county won't be taken over by a vigilante group.

Judge to Hear First Amendment Objections
Michael Cardenas,

Press Conference Today, myself, Danae and David Agranoff went into the Grand Jury room and refused to answer questions based on our First Amendment rights to free association and right to privacy.

We were then sent to see Judge Gonzalez at 4:15pm. The prosecution made the request that the hearings be sealed, so only one witness at a time spoke to the judge. In the courtroom were the two prosecutors, our lawyers, Danae, myself and David, and about 10 FBI agents. Myself, Danae and our lawyers were asked to leave while the judge heard Jeremy Warren's motions.

Equating Migrant People with Terrorists
lotu5,

The US, Canada and Mexico are putting the final touches on an executive agreement called the North American Alliance for Prosperity and Security which is a combined agreement on terrorism laws and economic laws, but it also contains sections dealing with immigration. Strangely, this is being kept very quiet in the United States despite the fact that Bush, Fox and Martin agreed in principle to the agreement in March and are continuing to have meetings to iron out the details.

San Diego Activists Subpoenaed for Grand Jury
Account by Michael Cardenas, story compiled by sdimc,

UPDATE: 6/20 - At least eight, possibly nine activists have received subpoenas at this point. In addition, the Acvitist San Diego house in City Heights was visited by 3 federal agents.

6/18 - At least 4 activists have now received subpoenas from the FBI, some being visited at work in an extra step of harassment. Those receiving the subponeas include David Agranoff, Colleen Dietzel and others. A community response will be announced soon.

The San Diego activist community has been the target of an intense campaign of harassment by federal law enforcement agencies, and that campaign went to a new level this morning. At a recent teach-in in San Francisco, a lawyer speaking about federal grand juries stated that they are often used in an attempt to "break the movement".

'This morning at 7:30AM, I was woken up by a knock on my door. The people knocking refused to identify themselves, simply saying they had "something for Michael Cardenas". When I opened my door, I found that it was two FBI agents. I wondered why I'm always at the door in my underwear when the FBI comes to my house. The agents were there to issue a subpoena to me for a federal grand jury to take place in San Diego on June 28th at 9:00AM.' - Michael Cardenas

The Grand Jury in San Diego continues the recent increase in government repression of political activity taking place all across the country, from New Jersey to San Francisco. Recently, 9 activists were subpoenaed in San Francisco. Last week an independent media activist Mark Conlan was visited and questioned by the FBI as well in connection with the La Jolla apartment complex fire set by the ELF in 2003.

In recent decades, the grand jury has been used increasingly to intimidate and harass activists who are pushing for social justice. Pressure on the animal rights, environmental justice, anti-war, and anarchist movements has been escalating. At a recent hearing before the Senate Committee on Environment and Public Works, John E. Lewis, Deputy Assistant Director of the Counterterrorism Division of the FBI, testified that, "Investigating and preventing animal rights extremism and eco-terrorism is one of the FBI's highest domestic terrorism priorities."

My Visit from the FBI and ATF
Mark Gabrish Conlan,

Rod Coronado On June 8, 2005 I was visited by agents of the FBI and ATF and questioned about the University Towne Centre fire of July 31, 2003 and the speech by animal-rights and environmental activist Rod Coronado in Hillcrest on August 1, 2003. That appearance has already led to early-morning raids on two other San Diego activists whose videotapes of the event were seized by the FBI, and Coronado's return to Southern California in May 2004 was met by even more intense repression. This time the FBI and ATF seemed interested mostly in obtaining photos of the audience at the Coronado event so they could scan them for "persons of interest" in the UTC arson investigation. 1,400 Janitors ON STRIKE!!

janitors vote to strike UPDATE: Photos from Friday's downtown protest for Justice for Janitors here
 http://sandiego.indymedia.org/en/2005/06/109255.shtml

1,800 janitors are in a grinding fight to gain health care in the suburbs, some of the most expensive real estate in the country. Many of these janitors are concentrated in La Jolla and Del Mar where they ironically clean pharmaceutical and biotech offices that make the medicines they can't even afford. The owners, and many times the tenants of these buildings are some of the richest national and multinational corporations on the planet such as Pfizer and Equity Real Estate.

Froilan Mercado (MUDP Rep),

On June 4, 2005 the minutemen entered the town of Fallbrook early in the morning. There had been no prior warning to their arrival as there was in the previous demonstrations. Their objective; to stop City Bank from allowing their Mexican patrons from using Mexican ID to cash checks or open accounts. They stood on the sidewalk on Main St. next to Denny’s with racist anti-Mexican signs. There were reports that they were intimidating and harassing a disabled Mexican man who was walking down the sidewalk.

Congress Recommends Sending Troops to Border
repost from washington post,

congress says this is our model... From the Washington Post: "The deployment of 36,000 National Guard troops or state militia on the U.S.-Mexico border would stop the illegal flow of foreigners into America, says a congressional report that credits the Minuteman Project with proving that additional manpower could "dramatically reduce if not virtually eliminate" illegal immigration."

Just what we need, more troops, this time operating within our own country. I wonder how far inland from the border these troops will operate? Who will they be attacking? Who benefits from all this? Who profits?

Call today to stop the MinnuteMen meeting in LA on Wed, May 25th:
