We also offer community service hours to high schoolers and others, if you qualify through our partnership with some local school and community agencies. For adults, too, if you would like to reconnect to the South Bay communities, or help us in tutoring the youths, contact us.

Come protest Bush in San Diego!!!
Bruce,

They tried to keep it quiet but couldn't !!!!!!!

FLASH! Several members of the military have e-mailed a DOD internal release to Stacy Taylor on KLSD 1360 this morning that announces Bush's appearance next Tuesday, August 30 at a ceremony on North Island to mark the anniversay of Japan's surrender end of WWII. There are to be 10,000 "invited guests." Gates will open at 6:00 a.m. for "invited guests"; the ceremony will take place at 8:00 a.m. It will be a harborside event so that protestors would be kept far from this location. However, one individual suggested that many people have boats which would be one way to transport protestors and their signs closer to the ceremony. Also, they suggested that the road leading to North Island in Coronado could be a protest location. It is also recommended that protestors carpool as parking in Coronado is scarce and parking laws are enforced. Individual organizations could charter busses to drop them off and pick them back up after the protest.

PLEASE DISTRIBUTE THIS TO YOUR LISTS SO THAT WE CAN HAVE A SOLID TURNOUT TO "WELCOME" BUSH TO SAN DIEGO.

Nicole Fink Now In Solitary Confinement
s t a r r (url added by sdimc volunteer),

Nicole Fink refused to talk to the Grand Jury this morning and was subsequently locked up. Since she refused to be subjected to a TB test, she will be in solitary confinement for approximately one week.

While federal marshalls took her into custody, her lawyer chuckled with the federal prosecutors, as if to say, "you win, guys, I gave it my all. Hey, wanna get a bite to eat?" During the two-minute hearing, he requested home confinement or bail, but Judge Irma Gonzalez rejected after one of the prosecutors countered: "Your honor, home confinement is not appropriate. I mean, I don't even know if she has a job or what her living situation is." It was an obvious attempt to discredit Nicole. In formal logic, it is known as the fallacy, petitio principi.

Before remanding her into custody, Judge Gonzalez stated that Nicole has no First or Fifth Amendment rights under a Grand Jury.

The decisions against David and Danae by the 9th Circuit Court of Appeals were referenced several times to justify locking Nicole up.

In related news, it looks like the Grand Jury probe will be extended six months until next June (2006), although this is not yet official.

Activist to Reappear before Grand Jury
cari beltane,

UPDATE: Support rally for Nicole at 8:30 a.m. at the federal courthouse on Front St. and Broadway on August 23. Danae's husband's subpoena has been dropped.

Nicole Fink will reappear before federal grand jury on Tuesday, August 23 at 9 a.m. On August 17, she appeared in court for what she believed would be a contempt hearing for refusing to testify. She was surprised to find that there was no contempt hearing, and that the judge actually rescheduled her to appear before the grand jury. Again, she will refuse to testify. Cities and Towns Around the Country Hold August 17th Vigils with Cindy Sheehan
indymedia.us,

On August 17th over 1,620 vigils were held all over the US in solidarity with Cindy Sheehan, who is camping in Crawford, Texas as she waits for President Bush to agree to meet with her. Her son Casey was a soldier who was killed in Iraq last year. Her son Casey Sheehan was a soldier who was killed in Iraq last year. While TrueMajority, MoveOn.org, and Democracy For America helped to organize the vigils, corporate media coverage of the events has focused disportionately on the efforts of these organizations, rather than on the genuine outpouring of support from the tens of thousands of people who turned up all over North America to share in Cindy's anti-war message.

The list continues to grow as Indymedia reports have come back in from Binghamton, Houston, Richmond, New York City, Tulsa, and across Cascadia. Lots of sites also have photos of the vigils available: Photos from Camp Casey | Photos from San Francisco: Federal Building | 24th & Mission | Photos From Berkeley: Adeline and Ashby | Solano Ave | Acton Street | The French Hotel | Photos From Oakland | Photos From Sacramento | Photos from LA | Photos From All Over The US .

Local Camp Caseys have been opened all over the US, such as Camp Casey San Francisco. Military mothers are calling for the president to join them Friday to pray for the troops in Iraq.

Hundreds have joined Cindy Sheehan in Crawford, Texas, to demand that the president come out and talk with her. Sheehan will be moving her camp closer to Bush's ranch after she was offered the use of a piece of land by a supporter. The white crosses to honor dead soldiers that were set up at her current camp will not be moved when she relocates. They were vandalized Monday night, and people will stay at the camp to monitor them.

the o.r.g.a.n.i.c. collective,

No Border Encuentro Flyer (no)Border Encuentro, August 27-28th, San Diego

Hola todos. Crazy times we find ourselves in. Millions of people forced to live underground, more than 3200 dead and tens of thousands more incapacitated crossing the border. Communities and families split by the wall. As if the border and its myriad forms of violence were not enough, racist paramilitaries are openly organizing across the US and finding enthusiastic partners in politicians and corporate press outlets alike. And then there are the numerous Neo-nazi groups crawling out from beneath their rocks, thrilled with the “Trojan Horse” of growing anti-migrant sentiment. . .

Anti-Immigration Forum Protested – Riot Police Add Tension
sdimc volunteer,

On Thursday, August 11, 2005 protesters and anti-immigrant activists turned out to a forum. The big names (James Gilchrist and Rep. Tom Tancredo) and potential conflict brought out media and the riot police. Although the corporate media downplays events when no outright mayhem ensues, there is a lot that can be learned from this event.

This summer has seen increasingly bold shows at anti-immigrant demonstrations. The violence against immigrants has increased with gun carrying minutemen patrolling the border. Now the leaders of this anti-immigrant movement are bringing their message of hate into our communities to breed fear and distrust among naive conservatives.

If you think that this is just your everyday "freedom of speech" issue look at the police presence - 150 cops in riot gear!? When has anything in Carlsbad ever had riot police?

Pulitzer Prize Nominee, Medical Lawyer & Health Care Expert *Pete Nunez Former Assistant Secretary of the U.S. Treasury, U.S. Attorney * Roger Hedgecock, Emcee

Background on this Forum: Originally, it was called for by State Senator Bill Morrow as a safe, public space for republicans, neo-cons and community members to get out their fears of the 'other' by scapegoating migrants. But with all the bad press the Minutemen have been getting and the violence associated with them, the Carlsbad school chief canceled it. The neo-cons and closet racists got mad, pressuring Bill Morrow not to back down. So he sued the school superintendant!. And now, the klan meeting, err, I mean, Town Meeting is back on

God Bless Freedom. See you there

Minutemen Leave Early; Protesters Celebrate
jen lawnorne and onto, san diego IMC,

The Minutemen left California as a failure, drawing few people to their project while encountering strong resistance from a broad coalition of opposition. Down and out, unsuccessful and ultimately ineffective, the California Minutemen packed up on Friday from their base camp, leaving two days earlier than planned, rudely missing the “Good Riddance Going Away Party” that the Gente Unida coalition planned for Saturday.

Despite the MinuteKlan’s absence, the diverse, multi-ethnic group of human and immigrant rights activists from around the state still managed to give them a proper bon voyage with a march, vigil, party, video and a little night-time chase.
