Pirate and FCC Activity in San Diego
repost from diymedia.net,
California: there's been lots happening in San Diego. 106.9FM has voluntary signed off after running out of funds to broadcast. According to the station blog it's hoped the hiatus is only temporary. Meanwhile Free Radio San Diego returned to the air over Halloween weekend, three months after it was raided and cleaned out by the FCC. The signal strength is reportedly much weaker. San Diego has also recently been the site of some serious FCC enforcement involving other forms of unlicensed operation. Specifically, the use of point-to-point microwave radio communications between corporations in the San Diego area and "sister companies" located over the U.S.-Mexico border in Tijuana. The FCC has issued 11 Notices of Apparent Liability against 10 companies, seeking to collect a total of $86,000. | Company | Proposed Fine | | Anderson Desk Company | $10,000 | | International Customs Brokers | $4,000 | | Kojo Worldwide Corporation | $10,000 | | Lamkin Corporation | $4,000 | | More Enterprises Communications Network | $10,000 | | Norman Krieger Incorporated | $4,000 | | Pacific Spanish Network, Incorporated | $10,000 | | Pacnet Incorporated | $10,000 / $10,000 | | Tocabi America Corporation | $4,000 | | Uniradio Corporation | $10,000 |
The range in size of proposed fines is primarily based on whether or not a company held a pre-existing license to the sort of radio system they were operating. Most of the dinged companies actually market stuff, like desks, cabinetry, fabrics, and golf grips. They most likely use radio links to communicate sales and order data from the U.S. to production factories in Mexico. Two are transport concerns, tasked to the haulage of stuff cross-border. However, More Enterprises and Uniradio actually operate radio stations, licensed in Mexico but controlled across the border via unauthorized studio-to-transmitter links. This adds to San Diego's unique history of unorthodox radio piracy.

106.9FM Temporary Shutdown, Need for Funds
the 106.9FM urban pirates,
Sadly, we at 106.9FM want to announce that we will be going off of the air temporarily, due to lack of funds. Remaining anonymous and raising funds has proven to be a very difficult task. We raised enough money at our last benefit to cover some of our operating costs, including utilities and internet access. We have also received a few generous donations which have helped us buy equipment for our new wattage upgrade. Unfortunately, we haven't gotten enough donations to continue our broadcast.

The minutemen were walled off from the protesters by CHP, horses and riot cops. About 350-500 protesters from San Francisco, San Diego and other cities were there to try to disrupt the event and provide a counterpoint to their racist messages. Less than half as many people, 150, were at the Minutemen rally.
While the Minutemen were making their speeches, numerous people tried to get past the lines to disrupt the activities. The Sacramento police used tazers numerous times. The sound of tazers clicking were "all over the place". One protester was held to the ground and tazered at the same time. There were 3 arrests, including one felony arrest with a 30,000 bail for a protester who was allegedly "resisting arrest". Demonstrators describd the police actions as "brutal", saying they were charging the crowd and "a lot of people were getting beat up".

October 22, 2005 - No More Police Brutality!
sdimc ,
From Police Shootings that result in death to grand jury investigations, San Diego's police state is out of control. Yesterday's Conference was attended by almost 100 people and addressed these tough issues. For nine days, Cherry Mason frantically looked for her daughter who was five months pregnant. Finally, she was notified her daughter had been shot and killed by a border agent who was participating illegally in a drug bust in a black neighborhood. She later discovered that her child; handcuffed, lying face down in the mud, had been shot in the back. [Complete Story: Angry Mothers Address CopWatch Conference]

Anti-Fascist Action Around the Country
repost from Chicago IMC, Columbus IMC by sd indymedia,
A plan by Neo-Nazis to march through a neighborhood in northen Toledo Saturday October 15, incited a riot. The ISO (international socialist organziaton), ARA (anti-racist action) and various members of the community came to counter-demonstrate against the Nazi's which were comprised of members from the NSM (national socialist movement) and National Alliance. When the protesters arrived there were only about 8 nazis including Bill White spokesperson of the NSM. When police tried to escort the nazis out in the neighborhood they were pelted by rocks and a crowd of up to 600 residents gathered in protest. Tear gas was used to push back people but the police were unable to control the crowd as they were hit by rocks when they would try to advance. SDSU Activists Protest Military Recruiters
Jocelyn Blake,
The Campus Anti-war Network at San Diego State protested military recruiters on October 13th and refused to back down in the face of police intimidation.
Military recruiters occupied San Diego State University for three days this week. They put on an extravagant display with hummers, war simulation games, a rock climbing wall, and even propelled off of buildings and parachuted out of aircrafts. All of this was an attempt to project an image of the military as a hub of adventure and excitement. Our protest showed up to expose the reality of life in the military: war, discrimination, sexual harassment and unfulfilled promises of opportunity. 10 activists from the Campus Anti-war Network (CAN) and the International Socialist Organization surrounded the recruiters during one of their propelling stunts and demanded that the military leave our campus.
