M,

Activist San Diego Film Series Presents Surplus: Terrorized Into Being Consummers.
When: Sunday December 11th from 4:00-7:00 PM
Where: Activist House: 4246 Wightman St 1 block south of University Ave and 2 blocks west of Fairmont on corner of Van Dyke & Wightman in City Heights.

CONSUMERISM December 2005 -- Activist San Diego film series presents a collection of films for this holiday season. The film series theme for this month will cover several issues related to consumerism and the negative effects that it can have on people and society. We will be showing three films on this topic throughout the month of December. At a time when people are being heavily encouraged to equate the purchase of material goods with love and happiness, true love and happiness take a back seat to what has become a wasteful unquestioning way of life. After the attacks on the world trade center on 9/11, George Bush said that the most patriotic thing one could do was to go shopping…….. These films are an answer to his claims about what it means to be a free and patriotic citizen of the United States of America.

ASD Film Series for the month of December presents:

1. Surplus: Terrorized Into Being Consumers
2. Affluenza -- (To Be Announced)
3. Escape from Affluenza -- (To Be Announced)

All films will have The Media Foundation and AdBusters’s Culture Jamming Anti-commercials before their screening.

FBI Raids Target Environmental Activist in NYC, Across the U.S.
repost from bombs&shields and nyc imc,

UPDATE - Arraignment Update from Flagstaff | NYC activist denied bai; extradited to Eugene

U.S - The FBI and Homeland Security agents have stepped up their campaign against anarchists and animal rights and environmental activists. On Wednesday, in New York City, 31 year old Daniel Gerard McGowan was arrested while at work. His apartment was also raided and computer and personal affects seized. His arrest is in connection with a May 2001 Earth Liberation Front arson at Jefferson Poplar Farms near Portland Oregon. The arraignment will be at 11:00 am Thursday morning on the second floor of the Federal Court Building, which is located at at 225 Cadman Plaza East in Brooklyn.

Portland activists, Frank Winbigler and Shannon (Nonny) Urick were approached in a cafe by three FBI agents, one agent from Homeland Security, and an Oregon Sheriff. They were served with papers ordering them to be witnesses in a federal Grand Jury investigation, and were also advised that they are both targets of the same investigation. The Grand Jury is scheduled for March 16th of next year in Eugene, Oregon.

Later in the day more than a dozen FBI agents, along with Joint Terrorism Task Force and local police officers raided The Catalyst Infoshop in Prescott, Arizona. Environmental publications were seized and one of the groups founding members was arrested. The arraignment is scheduled for 10:00 am Thursday morning in Flagstaff where the federal courthouse is. Police in Arizona consider anarchists to be a terrorist threat.

Earlier in the week federal agents were asking around Boston for Daniel Andreas San Diego, who they allege is responsible for placing an explosive pipe bomb at Chiron Corp in Emeryville, California on August 28, 2003. The Chiron Corp, a biotechnology company, was a target of the animal rights campaign to shut down Huntingdon Life Sciences, a company that performs cruel experiments on animals.

This most recent attack on the earth and animal liberation movements was obviously well coordinated and planned far in advance. Activists across the country have been doing what they can to protect themselves by sharing information about how to avoid dealing with authorities and developing a better security culture.

Greenpeace using pirate radio in protest
Phlegm, repost by lotu5,

Toxic Technology Yesterday activists with Greenpeace launched a banner-deploying blimp at the international headquarters of Hewlett-Packard in Palo Alto, California. Supplementing this action was a microradio station broadcasting on 91.3 FM, which told nearby listeners to "contact HP CEO Mark Hurd" about the company's use of toxic chemicals in its products, when safer alternative raw materials abound. It's nice to see the onsite action-based broadcast model is alive and well.

Theresa Cruz elligible for parol
repost from CCWP,

Theresa Cruz was found suitable for parole - unofficial statement

Friends,

I am thrilled to report that Theresa Cruz was found suitable for parole at her Board hearing yesterday, November 30th. After 14 years in prison and eight parole hearings, the Board finally did the right thing by approving parole for Theresa. Many, many thanks to all who wrote letters of support to the Parole Board and to Theresa's attorney, Linda Buchalter! The next step is for the decision to be reviewed by the en banc group (the entire Parole Board) and assuming they agree the decision will then go to Schwarzenegger. We will be developing a sample letter which can be sent to the Governor to encourage him to approve her release. . .

Bush touring border, met with protest in AZ
lotu5 ,

A guest worker program is not enough. We demand equal rights as citizens for all people. Tying someone's human rights to their employment is the same as slavery. Remember the African guest worker program? It didn't work out so well...

Bush is visiting Border states this week, with the exception of California. Along the way, he has already been met with protest:

Support the Frente Zapatista and Adbusters! In solidarity with human rights organizations and a growing anti-corporate, anti-consumer, anti-mindless-shopping movement chose not to spend one cent this weekend - and let shoppers and corporations know why! "Our aim is to cause people to consume in a slightly more conscious, ethical, thoughtful manner. That means buying at smaller businesses and not buying brand names, and not falling prey to advertising and brainwashing. Not to be part of the `culture of plenty,'" Inbal Kaplan, spokeswoman of the environmental organization Green Action, which took part in organizing Buy Nothing Day in Tel Aviv, November 2004

Report: World Summit On Information Society
Xavier Leonard / Jonathan,

presentation by $100 Laptop team The second part of the World Summit on the Information Society (WSIS) was held from November 16 to 18 in Tunis, Tunisia. The first part was held in 2003 in Geneva. Xavier Leonard of the non-profit Heads on Fire traveled to Tunis from San Diego to participate in this summit. This post contains a video that the SDIMC did some minor editing on and a report from Xavier's blog. I met with Xavier at a presentation he did prior to going to the summit. He stressed the importance of being involved with this process to insure that access to the internet and other communication is a right for the people of the world.

Update from global Indymedia: The second part of the World Summit on the Information Society (WSIS) is held from November 16 to 18 in Tunis, Tunisia. The first part of the UN sponsored event was held in Switzerland in December 2003, where people from all around the world gathered for meetings and actions during the official meeting in Geneva expressing protest under the slogan 'WSIS - we seize'.

The choice of place for the second part of WSIS - Tunis - is more than hypocritical for a summit on information society: While Tunisia is catching up economically with the capitalist North, it is far from any information society if you are talking about the freedom of information (report). Furthermore - and different to 2003 - it seems almost impossible to express protest against this summit. Nevertheless some initiatives and organisations called for alternative meetings. Some Human Rights Groups take part in the "Citizens Summit on the Information Society (CSIS)". Others try to bring in their ideas within the WSIS itself.

Free access to knowledge for everybody is not the goal of WSIS, and the summit organizers' plan is to concentrate on governmental and corporate use of information and communication technologies. This approach fits the choice of place. Yet, the summit does not only give legitimacy to a repressive regime, its focus also ignores the social and technological situation in the Magrebh region. The majority of people in this part of the world do not have access to communication tools and the authoritarian regimes in the region are reliable allies to the european governments in supressing freedom of movement.

Update 16 November:It is reported that Tunesia is blocking unofficial websites related to the WSIS. People said that they could not access Websites as wsisblogs.org or the CSIS Website from hotels or other places outside the official media centre. ( study on Tunesian internet filtering ). Furthermore there were reports of repressiv actions by Tunesian authorities against groups claiming freedom of speech in the days before the conference started.

Walmart: The High Cost of Low Price
sdimc,

The San Diego IMC is happy to host three screening of Robert Greenwald’s new film Walmart: the High Cost of Low Price. Friday, November 18 at 8pm and Sunday, November 20 at 4pm and 7pm at Voz Alta, 1544 Broadway, Downtown San Diego.

November 13th through 19th is "Higher Expectations Week," with events planned in over 1200 locations to hold Wal-Mart accountable for its negative impacts on communities. A major complaint that many people have is that Wal-Mart's growth has been thus far nearly unchecked. This past weekend, in hundreds of churches, mosques and synagogues across the country, congregations heard messages of economic justice, respect for community and fair labor practices. Robert Greenwald's new documentary "Walmart: The High Cost of Low Price" has been shown in thousands of homes and public places all over the US. Search for more screenings

A leaked internal document recently detailed the company's plans to open or expand 484 stores next year alone. The document lists 100 more expansion sites than Wal-Mart had previously disclosed. Another recently-leaked memo reveals the disregard with which Wal-Mart's executives view their more than 1.3 million employees in the U.S. It confirms facts that Wal-Mart has long denied, including that 46% of the children of Wal-Mart's U.S. employees are uninsured or on Medicaid. This memo lays out plans to remedy Wal-Mart's healthcare crisis, the memo lays out plans to cut spousal benefits, hire more part-time employees and encourage faster turnover, and discourage older and unhealthy people from working at Wal-Mart by requiring more jobs to require physically challenging tasks. Some are calling for Buy Nothing Day protests to target Wal-Mart on the day after Thanksgiving.

There are many good people in our community who spend many precious hours volunteering to help their fellow human beings. In soup kitchens, youth programs, clinics, the penal system, gender and sexual orientation crisis units, they work unselfishly to mitigate the individual tragedies of those floating helplessly in a world dominated by profit and success driven competition.
