June 27 - Demo Against Attacks on migrant ppl
repost from sdcpj,

Syliva Ramos's son was murdered by sheriffs in Vista last summer Tuesday, June 27 2006
4:30 PM to 6:00 PM
Vons Parking Lot - 92084
South Santa Fe Ave and Escondido Ave
Vista, CA 92084

The immigrant community in Vista has been struggling against repeated racist attacks by the powerful, starting with the murder of three latino men over a five day period last summer by sheriffs, the harrassment of day laborers by racist vigilantes, the recent border patrol sweeps through neighborhoods in Vista and other parts of San Diego County, and now the imminent passage of a secret, immigrant-bashing ordinance by the Vista City Council mandating registration and visible identification of employers of day laborers.

The North County Coalition for Peace, Justice and Dignity is organizing a project to document the activities of Border Patrol Agents and racist vigilantes in their communities. Join them in resisting the ordinance against day laborers by forming a human chain from the most contentious day laborer site to City Hall:

Anarchist Elected City Commissioner in FL
Mark,

anarchist Cara Jennings, an anarchist, has just been elected to the City Commission in Lake Worth, Florida.

Jennings was greatly outspent by big developers and sugar interests. Turns out people in Lake Worth don't like big developers and sugar interests.

Seems to me we could use a few good anarchists on our City Council and Board of Supervisors here in San Diego. Anybody feel like running for office?

"I and other anarchists believe that there should be no hierarchy, and that all decisions should be made on a community level by individuals on a voluntary basis."

"So it’s been difficult running for office and acknowledging that I’m putting myself in a perceived and sometimes real position of power over other people. The reason that people are excited to see me out there, like at an immigration rally, is because they know, whether I like it or not, that I have additional power that they don’t have. I don’t want to claim the assumed power that comes with winning an elected office, but at the same time, I’m in this position to leverage that power, and be outspoken about things that are wrong and receive attention for that. I don’t know really how you do that without falling into that trap of getting credit for a position of power that shouldn’t exist in the first place. It’s challenging."

"The practical reality is that in Lake Worth there’s not a large anarchist community, and there’s not even a large progressive community. So in order to make a better impact, I decided to run for office. I don’t think it was the most anarchist thing to do, but it was a responsible thing to do."

SOUTH CENTRAL FARMERS EVICTION HAPPENING NOW!
Natalie and sdimc volunteer,

from la.indymedia.org 5:20 a.m. The sherrifs (sqaudron of helicopters and squad cars) are at the farm. The eviction process is starting now. Farmers are calling all activists to converge to the farm for a massive protest (Alameda & 41st Street). The eviction might take up to 3 to 4 hours or longer.

Eviction of South Central Farmers and Supporters. Darryl Hannah and John Quigley still inside the property, other peaceful protestors conducting nonviolent civil disobedience.

From southcentralfarmers.com:
The South Central Farm is under siege. If you live in LA or anywhere near there please make your way to the farm to keep the protesters and farmers safe.

The immediate area around the Farm has been blocked off by the authorities limiting access to the site. Spontaneous rallies of support have sprouted on these perimeters with crowds increasing in size as the morning passes. Protesters still inside the Farm are being physically removed and arrested.

The easiest access is to come from the South side of the farm coming north on Alameda or to head east towards the Farm on 41st or any other streets that run east/west bound.

Once again, this is the Red Alert! The Sheriffs have begun and are carrying out the eviction! Mobilize as many people as you come to continue to protest this oppressive action

Arrests have already been made. It is still unconfirmed but there are also reports that a protester was carried out on a stretcher.

Bulldozer positioned nearby have began breaking through the fences.

Once again, please converge to the Farm.
41st Street and Long Beach Ave. Los Angeles, CA

Support Arrested Immigrants Rights Activist!!
Support Josh,

. Support and Witnesses Needed for Arrested Immigrants Rights Activist!

On June 3rd, Immigrant Rights Activists held a rally in San Ysidro, CA to protest the militarization of the U.S.-Mexico border and the oppressive, racist Hagel-Martinez bill. A small group of racist vigilantes from the Minutemen Project were confronted in a vocal, but very peaceful manner. During this confrontation the police assaulted and arrested Josh, a pro-immigrant rights activist, claiming that he had thrown a punch at an officer.

Josh is no longer in custody but is facing legal charges. The charge that a punch was thrown at an officer is an outright fabrication. We are calling on all who were present at the event and witnessed the arrest or any other incidents of police brutality to contact the support committee at  standuptopower@yahoo.com

Independent Journalists Visit, Report on Iraq
Mark Gabrish Conlan/Zenger’s Newsmagazine,

Dahr Jamail Independent journalists and filmmakers Mark Manning and Dahr Jamail spoke at the Thomas Jefferson College of Law June 2 and showed a short film, "Caught in the Crossfire," documenting the utter destruction U.S. forces in Iraq leveled against the city of Falloujah in November 2004. Jamail talked about how the U.S. military actions in Iraq have consistently violated international law and how the corporate media helped build support for the war — itself, he argued, a war crime — while Manning said the U.S. people are ultimately responsible for stopping the war in Iraq and bringing their country back to the norms of legal behavior.

Disability community takes the streets again
Bob Alba,

The disability community has been barraged with attacks on the ADA, targeted with housing cuts, loss of SSI benefits, and other necessary services. Accessibility housing is in high demand and getting worse with the building of new condos with no ground floor accessible housing throughout the city and condo conversions county-wide.

On June 1 the Disability Action Coalition organized a march and rally. About 30 people marched from the Federal Building up Broadway and then to the Civic Center for a a rally, where the numbers swelled to 60. The marchers carried noise makers and signs, including "Access means equality 4 everyone," "We are not a budget cut," and ""I have a dream low income housing." Chants included "Hey, hey what do we say, we want access right away" and "Serve the needy, not the greedy." The disability community is "fired up" they "won't take it no more" until things change and barriers to access are torn down.

SDIMC Film Nite/Critical Mass Ride VIDEO
queer-j brad,

mass on market The San Diego Independent Media Center sponsored a Cycling Film Nite, Critical Mass Discussion and Critical Mass Ride on Wednesday, May 24. About 40 people attended the films, and about 35 went on the ride afterwards. The films, Return of the Scorcher and We are Traffic, both by filmmaker Ted White, were inspiring, if a bit long, the discussion was productive, and the ride, although it was laid back, or maybe because it was laid back, was the best I have been on. The first field test of the sdimc helmet cam gave rise to a short, crudely edited video.

Mike Davis on Slums
queer-j brad,

Mike Davis On May 11 in International House's Great Hall at UCSD, urbanist, author and Professor of History at UC Irvine Mike Davis spoke to an audience of about 200 people about slums. Citing the UN-Habitat report, "The Challenge of Slums," Davis outlined the tragic facts about slums, including 1 billion current slum dwellers, an overlapping 1 billion people with no formal connection to their national or the global economy, and 2-3 billion people over the next half century most likely destined for slums. Summarizing his recent book, "Planet of Slums," Davis argued that slum expansion has reached a limit - an absence of free squatable land and the declining ability of slum dwellers to occupy survival niches has given rise to sectarian violence, child abandonment and other rational responses to desperate circumstances. He concluded with the hopeful picture of slums as incubators for burgeoning resistance movements.

Includes audio and partial transcript.

Solidarity Statement by U.S. Prisoners
Mark,

U.S. prisoner organizations have issued a statement of solidarity with those fighting for the rights of workers in France and the U.S.

"As those struggling for freedom in the context of the anti-prison movement, we as affiliates of the Allied Resistance Network send our strongest wishes of solidarity to the re-emerging workers' and migrants' movements spreading across the globe. We fight the same fight, whether it is in the streets, our workplaces, or the prison yard.

The movements for freedom do not exist separately from each other. Here in the United States, where over 2 million of the poorest populations are locked away in cages, we know firsthand the hardships and horrors of a society based on exploitation and authoritarian power structures that give the few the control over the many.
