Roots of Resistance Camp
repost from Project Steev/detritus on flickr/lotu5,
From Project Steev:"This past weekend I and 4 other Tucson activists drove to San Diego for the Roots of Resistance Summer Camp. The Organic Collective had organized it to get people, mostly border activists, to come and share skills and talk about plans. It was a really great time and really inspiring... I took a few photos, not only of the camp but our brief visit to the border wall on the beach - where there are gaps in the wall right now big enough that people can easily squeeze through, and do. Mexicans were casually slipping over and wandering the sand, but a border patrol truck on the hill was making sure no one went too far. We played soccer and talked with some of the Tijuanans for awhile. It was really cool. The whole weekend was just really really awesome.
From lotu5:"I spent this past weekend at the o.r.g.a.n.i.c. collective's Roots of Resistance Camp, rootcamp. It was an amazing experience, with people there from Arizona, Los Angeles, Orange County and lots of new and old faces from San Diego."

The Perma-Revolution: An Anarchist Perspective
Cecil,
The decline of the anti-globalization movement in the US and the amazing surge of support by anarchists after the devastation of hurricane Katrina suggests a new political and tactical alignment is possible in North America. We propose that anarchists need to work with the peak oil, permaculture and bioregional communities to better prepare ourselves for this new alignment.
Anarchists need to learn from our permaculturalist comrades the skills that will enable us to help people who most need aid during times when the state and capital refuse to offer it. We need to learn to create sustainable autonomous zones that can seriously challenge the power of the Government and the Capital.

David Rovics Performs in San Diego Sept. 8
Mark Gabrish Conlan/Zenger’s Newsmagazine,
America’s political folksingers have been fanning the flames of discontent for at least 100 years, from the IWW’s Joe Hill (convicted on trumped-up charges and executed in 1915) to Woody Guthrie and Pete Seeger in the 1940’s, Bob Dylan and Phil Ochs in the 1960’s, Utah Phillips and Fred Small in the 1980’s, and now Roy Zimmerman, Dave Lippman, Charlie King, the Prince Myshkins — and David Rovics, who’ll be bringing his songs and stage raps to San Diego Friday, September 8, 7 p.m. at the Sherman Heights Community Center, 2258 Island Avenue.

Oaxaca City SlideShow: Un Pueblo Unido Avanza Sin Partidos
~Bradley,
UPDATE: 9/1/06: Quinta MegaMarcha photos and SlideShow: Por un Oaxaca Mejor
Santa Cruz IMC reporter Bradley wrote on August 29th: "Oaxaca City is almost entirely closed today... I am the only tourist staying at my hostel today... I can't believe I was able to find an internet connection, this one is wireless, since almost every single door in the city is closed and locked. Since I got to Oaxaca City on August 26th, the Zocalo has been filled with people selling wares and showing videos of Oaxacan resistance, but today even the Zocalo is eerily quiet...

The Pride Beatings
Mark Gabrish Conlan/Zenger’s Newsmagazine,
On the surface, the reaction of the city and the police to the assaults that took place outside the Lesbian/Gay/Bisexual/Transgender Pride Festival July 30 seem fine; mayor Jerry Sanders made appropriately supportive remarks and three suspects were in custody within days of the incident. But a closer look reveals both city officials and members of the Queer community more concerned about damage control and protecting the profits of Queer businesses and the estimated $21 million the city takes in from the Pride events than in actually protecting the lives and safety of Queers in San Diego.

“Creating Chaos” Teach-In Explores Middle East
Mark Gabrish Conlan/Zenger’s Newsmagazine,
A teach-in called "Creating Chaos" in Golden Hill August 25, sponsored by the Middle East Cultural and Information Center (MECIC), featured three Arab-American speakers who challenged the view of Middle Eastern politics, especially the Israel-Lebanon war and the U.S. occupation of Iraq, commonly presented in the mainstream U.S. media. The speakers said the chaos created in the wake of the U.S. conquest of Iraq was deliberate and denounced the American peace movement for refusing to support the armed struggles of Hezbollah in Lebanon, Hamas in occupied Palestine and the resistance in Iraq.

Critical Mass Katrina Survivor Solidarity Ride
repost from Rising Tide North America,
Critical Mass is a celebration of bike culture, a meaningful alternative to car culture and greenhouse gas generating fossil fuels.
A strong scientific consensus agrees that the 2005 hurricane season was fueled by global warming -- and the crimes of the oil industry in the Gulf go beyond global warming.
August 25th marks the day Katrina reached hurricane strength and slammed into the coast of Florida. It's also the last Friday of the month, widely observed by Critical Mass rides around the country.
At least 28 cities around the country will be participating in a solidarity ride with Katrina survivors with goals to remind folks that the racist tragedy in the Gulf continues, to demand that it never be repeated, and to raise awareness about the role of the oil industry and global warming in environmental injustice.
San Diego's Critical Mass starts at 7pm on Friday from the big fountain next to the science center in Balboa Park.

Get Free Shit from Anti-Queer Group Focus on the Family
Noel Black, The Stranger repost,
When I'm feeling despondent over the state of gay rights in America - or the concurrent assaults on reproductive freedom, science, and rational thought there's just one thing that helps me overcome my feelings of despair: getting free shit from Focus on the Family!
Few people know that Focus on the Family, the powerful evangelical Christian para-church based in Colorado Springs, will give you, absolutely free of charge, books, CDs, and DVDs. Usually people pay for these products, and the millions of dollars raised helps Focus on the Family produce yet more books and CDs featuring Dr. James Dobson and other Focus "experts."
Not only does ordering free stuff from Focus on the Family, sent to myself or people I don't like, satisfy a deeply juvenile impulse, it has the added benefit of taking money directly out of homo-hater Dobson's pocket.
UPDATE: The SDIMC Editorial Collective regrets to inform our readers that the Focus on the Family web site appears to be "temporarily unavailable," for reasons unknown. However, if you simply must have 5 copies of "Mommy, Why Are They Holding Hands?" or 10 "Question Homosexuality" bumper stickers, you can call FOTF's TOLL FREE emergency number (800) A-FAMILY (232-6459).

Starbucks Adds Rats in the Cupboards to Rats in the Boardroom
nobux,
(with apologies to rats for comparing them to corporate monsters)
The primary role of Starbucks in society seems to be to destroy local businesses and exploit workers in this country and others in the pursuit of obscene profits.
Starbucks serves milk containing genetically engineered recombinant bovine growth hormone, a danger to dairy cow and human health, and only a tiny percentage of their coffee, 3,7%, is fair trade.
Starbucks is strongly anti-union, squashing workers' rights by intimidating and firing union organizers for the nascent Industrial Workers of the World Starbucks Workers Union, including the recent termination of IWW barista Daniel Gross. The IWW filed a complaint with OSHA over unsafe working conditions associated with rats and roaches at 44 NYC Sbux outlets.
Starbucks attacks local businesses with buy-outs, "cluster bombing" tactics, and market cannibalization. Starbucks outlets recently opened across from popular local businesses in two central San Diego locations: Urban Grind in Hillcrest and Claire de Lune in North Park. The Ocean Beach Grassroots Organization has been fighting Starbucks and other chain stores for years.
The Starbucks website lists over 200 stores in San Diego County.
I think you know what to do.

San Diegans Say No to US/Israeli Aggression
queer-j brad,
About 300 protesters met in San Diego's Balboa Park on Saturday for a combined march and rally to express opposition to the criminal US/Israeli aggression occupation in Lebanon, Palestine and Iraq. The mood of the demonstrators and speakers spanned outrage at the continuing atrocities and human rights violations, celebration of the effective resistance of Hezbollah, and contemplation of what will be required to right the wrongs. The overly long rally sapped energy from the crowd, but this was compensated somewhat by the sprinkling of gems throughout the speeches, especially the reading of the poem "Intifada" by Professor of Languages and Humanities at Southwestern College, Steve Kowit. A handful of counter-protesters parroted the elite/right-wing pundit/corporate media line. A 16-1/2 min video captures some of the highlights of the protest, as i experienced them.
Here is a larger frame version of the video

Remember the Hunger Strikers: Continue the Fight for Freedom
Janice Jordan - Peace and Feedom Party Candidate for Governor,
I returned last week from an eight day trip to Belfast, Northern Ireland. Every year the month of August in Belfast is filled with street festivals in many of the city's communities. This year is especially active, because 2006 marks the 25th Anniversary of the Ten Irishmen who gave their lives in the name of Irish freedom! The history of Irish liberation is a part of every day life. Support for the people of Palestine and Lebanon was visible in the pubs, on the streets and in the music halls. Recognizing and acting on the struggles of occupied and oppressed people around the world is something the Irish do without effort.
