Diebold Voting Machines Jam in Vista
repost from e-mail,

Two Diebold voting machines in Vista experienced paper jams on the already controversial computerized format that has been challenged on local, regional and national levels.

"What happend today in Vista is an example of the continued erosion of our democracy," said Fredia Avalos, a communication lecturer at Cal State San
Marcos. Vista filmaker Mark Day commented "I ended up voting twice. Those machines make a lot of racket and sound like an old harvesting machine. The whole thing is very scary."

MegaMarch in Oaxaca. Solidarity March and Rally in San Diego
,

Oaxaca (right: John Gibler) and San Diego (left: Miguel) Marches On Sunday, a mega-march organized by the Popular Assembly of the Peoples of Oaxaca (APPO), with an estimated hundreds of thousands to a half million to one million participants, filled the streets of Oaxaca City, reportedly at one point extending as long as 12 kilometers (7 miles). The march was said to be the people's response to the Mexican Federal Preventative Forces' (PFP) failed invasion of the University Autotonima Benito Juarez, which houses APPO's Radio Universidad, and the continuing attacks, arrests and repression. Early on Sunday, a university student guarding the radio station was shot in the chest and remains in critical condition.

Also on Sunday, a Oaxaca solidarity march leaving from the San Diego Oaxaca Solidarity Camp at the Mexican Consulate in Little Italy (at peak ~ 70 participants) took the streets and progressed through downtown and the gaslamp with banners and chants expressing solidarity with the Oaxacan People and their demands: the corrupt governor Ulises Ruiz must go; the federal PFP troops must leave Oaxaca and the political prisoners and disappeared must be returned in good health.

The march was preceded by an open mic rally where speakers discussed the situation in Oaxaca, Oaxaqueños in California, and demands upon the Mexican government and the San Diego Mexican Consul. As the Mexican Consulate was approached at the conclusion of the march, unassociated passersby dragged hay bales, which had been placed on the corner to give Little Italy a fake harvest ambience, into the street, according to an eyewitness who did not wish to be identified. The hay bale blockade at the corner of India and Cedar was the site of a post-march open mic rally further discussing the situation in Oaxaca and the demand for the end to police violence in both Oaxaca and San Diego.

Throughout the march and rally, the sdpd continued harassing and intimidating protesters in an attempt to curtail their rights to speak and be heard, and their rights to occupy public space. Early in the march, one copcar loudspeaker declared that the marchers were participating in a riot and would be arrested if they did not move to the sidewalk. As the march continued in the street, cops threatened the peaceful protesters with violence by dangerously accelerating their cars toward them in the back of and on either side of the march. Late in the march, a cop car struck a protester's wheelchair, fortunately not resulting in injuries.

At the hay bale blockade rally, the sdpd's frustration with nonhierarchical, self-organized resistance movements was evident, as they searched unsuccessfully for a leader to threaten and arrest. Cop photographers and videographers attempted to intimidate the protesters. One sdpd photographer moved into the crowd, apparently thinking that an armed thug amongst peaceful demonstrators would not be noticed. Protesters held signs up to block his view every time he attempted to take a photograph, eventually chasing him back to the sidelines.

Many protesters commented that they were energized by their ability to get out the message about Oaxaca despite the attempts at repression. Music and poetry after the rally produced a festive and hopeful atmosphere.

The San Diego Oaxaca Solidarity Camp continues at the Mexican Consulate, 1549 India Street in Little Italy. The protesters request your continuing help and support.

San Diego Activist Janice Jordan Running for CA Governor
san diego indymedia volunteer,

San Diego activist Janice Jordan is running as the Peace and Freedom Candidate for governor of California with a $400 budget. Her campaign calls for an immediate moratorium on the death penalty, community policing, universal healthcare and free education, affordable housing, full equality for women, support for unions and immigrant rights.

Jordan was political prisoner Leonard Peltier's vice-presidential running mate in the 2004 election. She is active in the San Diego Sagon Penn Chapter of CopWatch, the California Coalition of Women Prisoners, and other local groups working for positive social change.

Arnold Schwartzenegger is estimated to have spent $40 million for his republican bid for governor; Phil Angelides $36 million for the democrats. Despite the 100,000 times funding advantage the corporate candidates have over Jordan, in a recent mock election amongst California students, Jordan came in third - within spitting distance of the leaders: Jordan, 15.7%; Camejo, 8.9%; Olivier, 4.8%,;Noonan, 3.5%; Angelides, 34.5%, Schwarzenegger, 32.7%.

I spoke with Jordan outside a CopWatch event on October 22, the National Day of Protest Against Police Brutality. Video: 8min 33sec.

Oaxaca Repels PFP Attack on University, Oaxaca Solidarity Camp Continues at the SD Mexican Consulate
san diego indymedia volunteer,

john gibler from nycimc UPDATE 11/4 9:00AM Two of IMC journalist Brad Will's murderers arrested, seven reporters hurt by PFP | Solidarity demonstrations continue across the globe

On Thursday the Oaxacan people, using rocks, custom-made fireworks launchers and limitless courage, repelled a fierce attack by the Mexican Federal Preventative Forces (PFP) employing chemical weapons on University City, which houses the University Autotonima Benito Juarez and the voice of the struggle, Radio Universidad. The University has become the central location for The Popular Assembly of the Peoples of Oaxaca (APPO) since the PFP occupied the zocalo on Sunday. Read more here: 1 2 3

On Friday, about 20 people got out of minivans and shot at Radio Universidad.

In San Diego, protesters with the Oaxaca Solidarity Camp continue to occupy the sidewalk in front of the Mexican Consulate in Little Italy, despite being hassled by SDPD and consulate personnel. On Wednesday, an energetic display of chanting, yelling and percussion rocked the consulate and Little Italy off their foundations. On Thursday, protesters showed films projected onto the Consulate garage door about the Oaxacan People's struggle, as well as the video Indymedia journalist Brad Will was shooting when he was assassinated in Oaxaca last Friday. As if on cue, the garage door opened and the Consul drove out during Will's video. On Friday, energetic chanting accompanied the presence of fox news. A surprisingly high fraction of the people passing by the consulate had some awareness of the situation in Oaxaca. The protesters request your continuing support and help maintaining the Camp.

Oaxaca Update
sdimc volunteer,

danielsan / santa cruz imc The Mexican Federal Preventative Police (PFP) continues to occupy parts of Oaxaca City following an invasion on Sunday, which Vincente Fox has claimed was triggered by the need to restore order following PRI paramilitary killings on Friday. Despite calls from federal legislators, including those of his own PRI, Ulises Ruiz Ortiz has refused to resign. The People of Oaxaca continue to resist, retaining barriers at some locations in the city and attempting to displace the PFP nonviolently.

The Zapatistas have called for solidarity blockades today, November 1, and a general strike on November 20 (espanol, english). Protests have taken place at over 20 Mexican embassies and consulates in the US.

The Oaxaca Solidarity Camp has continuously occupied the sidewalk outside the Mexican Consulate in Little Italy since Sunday evening, and the shifting camp population, drawn from autonomous collectives and groups in the region, has vowed to remain until the occupying forces are withdrawn from Oaxaca.

Over the past several years, Little Italy has been swept clear of real people through a combination of gentrification, cops and private security forces. It now provides a lifeless, sterile concrete, steel and glass environment for its largely atomized, over-consuming zombie inhabitants.

The Camp has brought to this barren a feeling of warmth and community, with singing, chanting, pot banging, signs, candles and a Dia de los Muertos altar. The Consul has been visibly disturbed by the Camp's display of power from below. The sdpd has detained three protesters apparently for having the gall to occupy three-dimensional space, as no legal reason could be discerned by videotaping observers.

The Oaxaca Solidarity Camp continues, as does the electronic blockade of Mexican Consulates and Embassies in North America.

Photos: Mexican Consul goes to Oaxaca Vigil
Miguel,

UPDATE: Additional Photos From the Sunday Protest Here
Call to Action Monday Nite and Beyond Here
Luis Cabrera, Mexican Consul in San Diego came to the vigil. His displeasure with the protestors in defense of the people of Oaxaca was apparent. He kept pacing around, talking on his cell phone and conferring with police. At one point he turned to a protestor who was doing nothing except standing there and said in Spanish: "Can you get the fuck out?" To which the anglo protestor answered in Spanish: "Can you get out of Oaxaca?"

The vigil in front of the Mexican Consulate in San Diego on India Street calls for an IMMEDIATE STOP to Mexico's State repression, violence and assasinations in Oaxaca.

¡OAXAQUEÑOS NO ESTAN SOLOS!

Mexican Federal Forces Attacking Demonstrators and Retaking Oaxaca City; Protests at the Mexican Consulate; Electronic Protest
sdimc volunteer,

On Friday, armed paramilitaries attacked a barricade of The Popular Assembly of the Peoples of Oaxaca (APPO), killing NYC Indymedia reporter Brad Will and injuring photographer Oswaldo Ramírez of the daily Milenio. Video footage from Will's camera was used to identify the attackers, Abel Santiago Zárate and Juan Carlos Soriano Velasco from the local police and PRI politicians Manuel Aguilar and Pedro Carmona (Will's assassin). In a separate incident later in the day, Oaxacan schoolteacher Emilio Alfonso Fabián and resident Esteban López Zurita were killed. In paramilitary attacks on friday, a total of four people were murdered, thirty wounded and several abducted.

Vincente Fox, President of Mexico, has used the paramilitary attacks organized by his PRI partners as a pretext for sending the Federal Preventative Police (PFP) to Oaxaca to suppress the five month APPO resistance movement, which has occupied sections of the central city and government buildings, demanding the resignation of the corrupt PRI governor Ulises Ruiz Ortiz, the release of political prisoners and the end of repression in Oaxaca.

Radio APPO (english translation) and Narco News are reporting that the PFP has advanced through Oaxaca City into the city center, removing barricades and reoccupying government buildings, including city hall. APPO has requested nonviolent resistance only. Violent attacks on government forces by provocateurs have been reported.

La Otra Campaña Tijuana: Revolution on Our Doorstep
rocky neptun,

from http://enlacezapatista.ezln.org.mx Marcos came to Tijuana, last Wednesday and Thursday, October 18th and 19th, within the shadow of our wall of shame, to bring Zapatismo to Mexico’s fourth largest city through the “La Otra Campaña” tour. A series of forums held over the last year in 31 Mexican states which says that there is a better way to do politics than stolen elections, bribed congress persons, corrupt, violent governors, and corporate thievery. Politics from the bottom up, not top down; where all the stakeholders in civil society; workers, peasants, students, women, gays, indigenous groups have the power to control the economic, social and political processes that influence their lives.

Here, amid the ruins of the former world of the Tijuana rich, young people commit themselves to authentic lives and autonomous communities free of greed. They do not fear the loss of material comforts or jail. A new culture of resistance begins to take shape as Mexico rediscovers its continuing revolution. There is, indeed, hope.

FROM SDIMC: Further stories, photos, audio and video on the EZLN's Sixth Commission visit to Tijuana are forthcoming...

Resisting Police Brutality in San Diego
sdimc volunteer,

In many San Diego communities, mostly communities of color, police brutality is a fact of life, much like the sun rising in the east or traffic jams on the freeways.

This brutality takes many forms, from harassment of youth, to profiling, to la migra, to the too common brutal beatings and murders, to the criminal injustice system and the inhumanity of prison. The resulting loss, sadness, fear and outrage rarely break through the protective bubble the corporate media have maintained around the "general public," who remain largely blissfully ignorant of the pervasive oppression and cruelty these communities are experiencing.

In 1996, a coalition of groups came together to declare a national day, October 22, to protest, resist and draw attention to the then (and continuing) epidemic of police violence.

In San Diego, two groups who have been working to combat state sanctioned violence, the Sagon Penn Chapter of CopWatch, and the San Diego Chapter of the Peace and Freedom Party, are organizing events for the weekend of the 22nd. On Friday, October 20, a fundraiser benefiting both groups and teach-in will be held at the Arts and Entertainment Center in North Park, featuring talks by candidate for governor Janice Jordan, candidate for the board of equalization Mary Lou Finley and member of CopWatch Ayesha Newell, as well as bands Unified Division, Dropjoy and Ya Basta! On Sunday, October 22, Sagon Penn CopWatch is planning an afternoon and evening of resistance, starting with a protest at the home of DA Bonnie Dumanis, over her continuing refusal to prosecute out of control cops, and continuing with police complaint form instruction, a screening of Urban Warrior and a performance by the Radical F'N Cheerleaders at Voz Alta.

Bike Ride for Climate Justice
queer-j brad,

On Friday evening, five members of San Diego Cyclists for Justice distributed over 250 flyers on global warming and resistance to corporate climate change while riding through the streets of Hillcrest and North Park. This Bike Ride for Climate Justice was an action in solidarity with activists in Mexico protesting the G8+5 meeting in Monterrey Oct 3-4, where governments of the eight richest countries and five developing nations rubber-stamped a plan to invest trillions in propping up the fossil fuel economy and to shift the burden of ameliorating the effects of resource overconsumption to the Global South through carbon trading.

Flyer distribution began at the haunted house in Balboa Park, where riders pointed out to those in line that climate change is way scarier than ghosts. Shouts of Climate Justice Now, Resist Corporate Climate Change and Stop the G8 echoed off buildings as flyers were handed to pedestrians, coffee drinkers, workers, dog walkers and some drivers along University Ave. The ride ended at the Rubber Rose Sexuality Shop, where a plan was hatched for a Climate Change is Scary Ride - details forthcoming.
