People Seize the Streets as Resistance to War Continues
,

pic Over 300 committed peace activists marched from 30th and University in North Park to Fifth and University in Hillcrest — and back — Friday evening, March 28. Sponsored by People Acting Against War (PAAW), this march faced an assault from police who kept trying to force the line of march back from the street to the sidewalk. According to marchers, police on horseback charged the crowd while other officers riding bicycles ran them over the toes of marchers and tried their best to slow the march down. But the people stayed united and, rallying under the chant, "Whose streets? OUR STREETS!," were able to stay together and take back the street from the cops. 70-year-old protester Roland Diom was hit on the head by a cop with a nightstick and later arrested.

If you participated in this march and were a witness to any police brutality, click here and get in touch with the march organizers. They need to hear from you!

Images of war the corporate media don't want you to see
,

look at her eyes During the Viet Nam war, some of the most powerful recruiting tools for the anti-war movement were the powerful images broadcast and published in the corporate media graphically showing the horrors our napalm attacks, indiscriminate shelling of civilian villagers, and in some cases outright murders of civilians and prisoners were wreaking on the Viet Namese people. That's a message the corporate media aren't making again this time around. Citing considerations of "ethics," "good taste" and "concern for families," the corporate media have united to suppress these images and give the American people the impression this is a "clean," sanitized war. Here is a sample of some of the images that have been posted to our site exposing the corporate media lies and the true horrors of this war. Share them as widely as possible and let the basic kindness and humanity of the American people do the rest of the work and raise a powerful demand to STOP THIS WAR NOW!

Analysis by Tom Kertes, exposing why you aren't seeing these images in the corporate media.

Anti-War Activism Rocks SD
,

Drummer at protest in the streets 3/19 IMC activists have been so involved in recent anti-war demos that we haven't updated the site in a while. Here's a look back at the past few days of activism. Especially noteworthy were the events of young activists who led "die-ins", blocked traffic, got arrested, made noise, reclaimed the Plaza in front of the Federal Building, and generally showed that there's a new way of doing things in town.

Latest peace events in San Diego:

1) U.S. military out of Iraq and ALL other countries in the Middle East.

2) U.S. corporate entities out of all other countries.

3) Triple the U.S. education budget and fund this out of a reduction in the defense budget.

S. Brian Willson: “Nonviolent Anarchist Bioregionalist” Speaks in S.D.
,

B. Wilson and Gelger 2-23-03 S. Brian Willson became a legendary figure in America’s peace movement in 1987, when he attempted to block a train carrying military supplies and lost both his legs when the train sped up and ran over him. But his speech in San Diego on February 23 went far beyond a simple call for opposition to the threatened U.S. aggression against Iraq. Willson’s speech included a slashing attack on the entire history of human "civilization" and a call for a simpler form of existence. Describing himself as a "nonviolent anarchist bioregionalist Buddhist," Willson called the George W. Bush presidency a "cosmic gift" whose function is to educate the population of the U.S. and the world in the unsustainability of the "civilized" lifestyle.

SEIU Local 2028 Joins Labour Against War
,

San Diego Service Employees labour union (SEIU Local 2028) has recently come out, officially, against the impending war on Iraq. This makes this one of the first few labour unions in San Diego to join other labour organisations accross the country and the world in opposition to Bush's planned invasion of Iraq. SEIU Local 2028 and its members have mostly been opposed to war, because they see the effects war has on the working-class. The National SEIU has drafted an anti-war letter to George Bush, Jr.

SEIU members, like other Americans, have a wide range of opinions about important policy issues, but we all care about human life and about our country. It is the working people of America and our children whose lives will be on the line if our government cannot resolve conflicts without war...(Read More)

U.S. “Justice” Department Presents: PATRIOT ACT 2!
,

It's hard to say what is worse about the U.S. “Justice” Department's proposed new Domestic Security Enhancement Act — a sequel to the U.S.A. PATRIOT Act of 2001 that not only further strips U.S. citizens, as well as legal immigrants, of their right to due process of law and to know about government abuses, it also allows the government to de-nationalize U.S. citizens and declare them “terrorists” — the text itself or the incredible secrecy with which the Justice Department drafted it even while denying to Congressmembers who asked that they were considering any additions to the original PATRIOT Act. Fortunately, a courageous individual within government leaked this horrific piece of proposed legislation to the nonprofit Center for Public Integrity, which in turn passed it on to Bill Moyers’ NOW program on PBS, which produced a TV report on it, transcribed here, aired February 7. Nonetheless, there has been almost no follow-up from the corporate media.

SEIU Local 2028 Organises Teachers
,

For the past couple of weeks, the SEIU Local 2028 labour union (from San Diego) has been organising working-class teachers throughout the County for better pay, living conditions, and social justice.

The campaign to unionise local teachers from the "Head Start" programme is coming to a successful conclusion. The SEIU continues to push for worker's rights in spite of employer attempts to propagandise and otherwise threaten the teachers into anti-union sentiment... (Read More)

Veterans Take Increasingly Active Role in the U.S. Peace Movement
,

Banner at January 29 demo Protests against the threatened U.S. aggression against Iraq are increasingly being led by people who have served in the military themselves. Not only did a new organization called San Diego Veterans for Peace lead a protest vigil outside Horton Plaza downtown on January 25, but on January 29 the San Diego branches of the International Action Center (IAC) and A.N.S.W.E.R. (Act Now to Stop War and End Racism) led a rally outside the Federal Building with speakers Tim Helsley, Carl Muhammad, Scott Cossette, Gregory Broderick, who recalled their own military experiences and the lies they were taught throughout their time in the service so they would obey and faithfully serve the imperialist and racist purposes for which the U.S. military exists.

William Pepper William Pepper, close friend and associate of Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. during the last year of King’s life, has devoted the last quarter-century of his own life to investigating and documenting the conspiracy responsible for what he calls the “execution” of King. He spoke in San Diego at Current Affairs Bookstore January 28, 2003 and outlined his reasons for believing there was a conspiracy to kill King, his attempts to secure justice for the King family and accused King assassin James Earl Ray (who died in prison in 1998) and his continuing belief in King’s anti-racist, anti-war and anti-capitalist ideals.

Former Weapons Inspector Scott Ritter Speaks in North Park Jan. 20
,

Scott Ritter at Current Affairs Former U.S. Marine and Iraq weapons inspector Scott Ritter spoke at the Current Affairs Bookstore in North Park January 20 and gave the message that has made him an unlikely hero of the current peace movement. According to Ritter, Iraq almost certainly has no weapons of mass destruction — if it did, he said, we would know about it — and the Bush administration’s grim, ideologically driven push towards war against Iraq flies in the face of public opinion not only in the world at large but even in the United States, where polls indicate that a majority of Americans would support a war only if it is definitively proven that Iraq actually has nuclear, chemical or biological weapons.
