Blackwater-Potrero Protest
Louis (text added by sdimc volunteer),

Crowd Blackwater USA (1 | 2) is planning to open a training facility outside of Potrero, a rural community in southeast San Diego County. Blackwater is a rightwing mercenary corporation with close ties to the neocons which has operated in Iraq, New Orleans after Katrina and elsewhere. County officials are enthusiastic. Residents, environmentalists and those disturbed by trends towards privatizing military and police functions are opposed.

On thursday, a protest against Blackwater preceded the first hearing where the public has had a chance to ask questions about the plan. Photos from the Protest and Hearing

Comment from John B.: Scary -- Having read the book "Blackwater: The rise of the world's most powerful mercenary army" the thought of them opening another training camp anywhere is frightening. Through their political connections they are getting enormous contracts without bidding. The actions of its army in Iraq are not allowed to questioned and the murders committed by them cannot be questioned or the murderers brought to trial. Block them from your area if you can.

Emergency Demo: No War Against Iran!
David Paul,

by GreyHawk The Bush administration continues moving closer to a nuclear attack on Iran. Last week, the Russian News and Information Agency Novosti (RIA-Novosti) quoted military experts predicting the US will attack Iran on April 6th, Good Friday. According to RIA-Novosti, the imminent assault will target Iranian air and naval defense capabilities, armed forces headquarters as well as key economic assets and administration headquarters. Massive air strikes will be deployed, possibly tactical nuclear weapons as well, and the Bush administration will attempt to exploit the resulting chaos and political unrest by installing a pro-US government... We, in the United States, have a MORAL OBLIGATION to try to STOP THIS ATROCITY FROM HAPPENING!

Congress is in recess, which means rep Susan Davis (D) may be at her office on April 4, 2007. The US may attack Iran on April 6, 2007.

Public Hearing: Blackwater Training Facility in San Diego?
Lance/reposts,

Blackwater, a multi-million dollar mercenary company owned exclusively by a right-wing Christian billionaire, is trying to develop an 824-acre military training facility in the rural community of Potrero in southeast San Diego. All of the land is either within the Cleveland National Forest or an Agricultural Preserve.

The citizens of Potrero are trying to stop its construction but are having a hard time stopping the political power of Blackwater. --Read More--

s t a r r: I work in the Cleveland National Forest, hiking with kids every day through the very meadowlands you describe. There is no way in hell Blackwater USA, war profiteers, Inc. are going to invade our public lands... Not only should Blackwater be dismantled, their activities in Iraq should be revealed. They send mercenaries in to kill, maim, and injure, and then deny negligence when their people get killed and dragged through the streets...--Read More--

Connie: Just what we do not need is the crazy making of war here in Southern California. Why is it that money talks so loud, there is no benefit to the citizens of the area, it is not bringing new revenue or jobs to the area. The land is better used as farm land, we need food not weapons. The Potrero Planning Committee have been seduced into believing this is in their best interest. I am wondering how many of them were enticed with favors and money? The military already have a training facility in that area, they take up a huge portion of the land with their military training. The sound carries for miles, the chopper activity, etc is heard everywhere. --Read More--

Locals Visit Cucapá Community
sdimc volunteer,

photo by lucha Since approximately 9000 years ago the Cucapá have lived in the land adjacent to the Rio Colorado, dedicated fundamentally to fishing. Eighteen years ago the Mexican federal government began passing laws that made it nearly impossible for the indigenous Cucapá to live in these lands. The rivers near the Cucapá are drying out because of the dams that have been built on the US side of the Colorado River. Therefore, the current fishing grounds have become a last resort for their survival. In addition, in these waters, fishing of any type of marine species has been prohibited. With the implementation of this decree, the life of the Cucapá has been gravely affected; putting at risk the existence of the Cucapá as indigenous people in Baja California.*

*previously posted for full press release CLICK HERE

a san diego indymedia volunteer got an opportunity to interview Fernanda Rios (collective zapatista, california coalition against poverty) and Andrea Donez (collective zapatista) who have contributed time to organize support for the Cucapá camp and who recently traveled to the Cucapá community

Q: How did you hear about the Cucapá situation?

F.R.: Sup came to the border and told us we should be supporting the indigenous communities nearby.

A.D.: After the commission visited the Cucapá, Delegate Zero said, “We have decided to send an urgent message to the Mexicans and Chicanos north of the Rio Grande to come here in order to maximize the number of people here, create a safe space, and protect the Cucapá and Kiliwa community during the fishing season.”

New Search Warrants in Migrant Camp Vandalism
Diane,

SAN DIEGO—Detectives from San Diego Police Department served two more search warrants this morning in connection with the vandalism of migrant camps in McGonigle Canyon. Vandals entered the camps on January 27, and slashed new clothing, tents, blankets, sleeping bags, and other personal property.

The search warrants were served at the homes of Jeff Schwilk, founder of the San Diego Minutemen, and Julie Adams, resident of Rancho Penasquitos and one of the organizers of the November 2006, McGonigle Canyon anti-migrant protests.

Michael Parenti Speaks on "Culture Struggle"
Mark Gabrish Conlan/Zenger’s Newsmagazine,

Michael Parenti From Mark Conlan: Michael Parenti, Berkeley-based Leftist author and professor, gave several talks on a recent tour of San Diego, inclding one at the Malcolm X Library March 7 on "The Culture Struggle." Parenti analyzed the connection between culture and class in Marxist terms, saying that culture is the way an owning class trains the working class to have the values that will make working people content with their lives and disinclined to challenge the existing ownership and control of the means of production. In his speech, and his similarly titled book, he also scorned "cultural relativism" — saying the idea that people brought up in one culture can't judge those from another has been used to defend social evils like slavery and rape — and also talked about capitalism has increasingly turned culture into a commodity.

From white m@le fed up with White Males: What a surprise to see a white male criticizing the experiences of people of color, women, and queer folk. and also surprise, he's a marxist! congratulations sir, you and your irrelevant ideology are part of the same culture that aims to perpetuate the oppression of people of color, women, and queer folk. of course the experiences of black women (for example) are subordinate to your epistemological claims! because you follow a long tradition of western enlightenment thinking that has hegemonically controlled the discourses of truth for hundreds of years!...

From shine: i am a queer female, and i was not offended by parentis words at all. i don't think he was "critisizing" our experiences as you say. in fact i think they are largely right-on. though i do find a unique solidarity amongst other queers or other womyn (and could understand why blacks would find a unique solidarity with each other or diabled folks would) i ultimately think parenti is right that our focus should be on the ruling class and should be on the ways in which we are all subservients and need to take back power... the fact that marx and parenti were both white males doesn't make their words untrue...

More from white m@le fed up with White Males: ...the idea that all hierarchy can be reduced to simple class functionalism is absurd. which is essentially the problem with marxism as a whole and the focus for the majority of criticism of the ideology by people who are actually interested in eradicating hierarchy. sure, we can all fall into step behind this notion that class is the only thing that matters, but will that topple patriarchy (the mujeres libres ran into this same problem in the spanish civil war)? racism? homophobia? are we really expected to believe that these are only tools utilized by the bourgeoisie to oppress the workers and not completely enculturated patterns of behavior representing hundreds of years of life under oppressive governmental and economic systems?...

From anarchomarxist: ...The slippery slope of identity here reduces to either the individual's own oppression being different from any others' resulting in the assertion of the individual as the main agent of history (the re-assertion of liberalism) or the next step in the critique which is the deconstruction of the individual as anon [white m@le fed up with White Males] suggests. The former brings with it all the problems of liberalism from the enlightenment that Hegel, Marx and many Anarchist theorists sought to problematize, critique and move to something more liberatory (theoretically only in the case of Hegel) that would not only better explain phenomena but lead to a sustaining practice. And the later results in a never ending negation of all postulates that seek to get agency off the ground (the postmodern predicament). Anon [white m@le fed up with White Males] suggests the later is how we should view individuals but fails to acknowledge the theory and practice problems that comport to this mode of discourse...

Urgent - Eric McDavid in Need of Funds
Sacramento Prisoner Support,

from greenscare.org Adapted from greenscare.org: Eric McDavid and two other codefendants now cooperating with authorities were arrested on January 13, 2006, although they had not committed a crime. The three are accused of "conspiring to damage or destroy by explosive or fire" cell phone towers, power plants and US Forest Service facilities. He faces 5-20 years in prison if convicted.

The three allegedly fell into federal hands because of a paid informant named "Anna," a very militant-sounding "activist" who was paid $75,000 plus expenses for her time "embedded" in the group.

To date, his time in prison has been arduous. He was not being fed vegan food and went on hunger strike to protest his improper treatment. He fell ill and lost a great amount of weight before the prison began to meet his dietary needs. Eric has been refused bail as a "flight risk" or "danger to the community," so he has been detained in solitary confinement at a Sacramento jail since his arrest.

One codefendant, Lauren Weiner, agreed on May 30, 2006 to cooperate with federal investigations and pled guilty to a lesser charge of conspiracy. She has been released on bail. According to a press release on Wednesday, July 19, Zachary Jenson also has pled guilty and has agreed to testify against Eric.

Eric still maintains his innocence and needs support.

From Sacramento Prisoner Support: After paying for all of Eric's legal fees for over a year, his family is in need of assistance. His trial date is approaching and the legal fees are mounting. We need to raise $15,000 to ensure that Eric's legal fees - lawyer, investigators, etc - are covered through trial. --Read More--

San Bernardino Marches Against the War on Iraq and the War on Migrants
Leslie Radford,

The War on Iraq and the War on Migrants came together in a march and rally in San Bernardino.

About 700 anti-war, pro-migrant demonstrators marched through the streets of San Bernardino (pop. 185K) and rallied at the steps of city hall. On the fourth anniversary of the war in Iraq, anti-war rallies in larger cities, with their made-for-video traffic snarls and performance art, filled progressive news outlets. But around the nation, local communities like San Bernardino rose up, too, to say "no mas" to President Bush's terrorism.

For the mostly Mexican-American San Bernardino protesters, the terrorism is too near to think about photo ops and dress up, too real for carnival masks. The Department of Homeland Security's ICE division at least twice now has rousted hundreds southern Californians like them from their beds and hauled them off to prisons and deportation.

Mexican Native Speaks for American Nativists
Diane,

Claudia Spencer speaking at a press conference in Escondido In the past year, Claudia Garcia Spencer has emerged as a new voice in the anti-immigration movement, which relies on Spencer’s Mexican heritage to add a patina of legitimacy to known nationalist organizations. Spencer, who says she speaks on behalf of the majority of American Hispanics and Latinos, claims that the American way of life is threatened by “hordes of shameless, ungrateful, illegal foreigners,” who are turning US cities into “third-world cesspool[s].”

dj lotu5,

freEtech 2007 -- an (un)Conference: san diego, march 25th

why freEtech 2007?
Community. Free Software. Openness. All of the values of the Free Software movement are totally violated by O’Reilly publishing’s conferences. These same values are what has made internet culture exciting and vibrant and an important social force, and they are also the words that O’Reilly uses to market its $1500 per seat ETech conference.

If you care about creating and sustaining a technological culture that is accessible to everyone, instead of being accessible to those who have $1500 to blow on a 4 day conference, then help us create freEtech, a free and open unconference in San Diego on March 25th, the day before eTech begins. There’s a reason why the list of presenters is overwhelmingly white men, we’ll talk about why...

50 activists led by the Brown Berets marched from Emerald Hills Park to the site of the shooting to demand JUSTICE for Noé Rojas!!!

According to eye-witnesses, they shot him down with his hands in the air and then claimed he had a gun which they say now was actually plastic. Two family members in the car at the time said there was no such gun. If one turned up, then AS USUAL, the police planted it.

Pittsburgh Organizing Group Shuts Down Defense Contractor
repost from pittsburgh organizing group,

pittsburgh organizing group shuts down def contr http://organizepittsburgh.org On Friday, March 2, Pittsburgh Organizing Group (POG) and supporters set out to shut down the National Robotics Engineering Center (NREC), a largely Pentagon-funded venture of Carnegie Mellon University (CMU) that has become a world leader in warfare robotics. The action succeeded beyond the organizers' expectations.

Two actions were organized for the purpose of creating a barricade. The first was a non-publicized effort by four affinity groups to barricade the main entrances through the use of lockboxes (long pipes through which people's hands are locked together), u-locks, and a tripod. These groups deployed at 5am, before police were on the scene. This action alone blocked all vehicular access to NREC and severely disrupted the possibility of pedestrian traffic. [14 arrests, all released]. The second piece of the action was a publicly announced 7:30am march from Friendship Park to NREC, which also intended to barricade the facility. As expected, a large number of police were deployed at various locations to ensure the march would not be able to successfully create a barricade.

AntiGenocide Activists in Guatemala Kidnapped, Threatened
repost from twin cities indymedia, translation: sdimc volunteer,

An indigenous rights organizer pursuing the national genocide cases in Guatemala was recently kidnapped in Guatemala City while other members of the activist legal team with whom he works have received written threats and incurred other types of intimidation.

On Feb. 2, Otto Navarro, a lawyer with the Center for Legal Action in Human Rights (CALDH), found the tire of his car slashed. Later that day, Josè Roberto Morales, CALDH's indigenous rights coordinator, was kidnapped by two armed men in a carjacking in front of his house. They released him in another neighborhood, advising him that if he activated the vehicle's alarm they would return to his home to murder him. His vehicle was later uncovered with all of his belongings, including a laptop computer, intact.

That weekend, from Feb. 3-5, unknown assailants broke into the offices of three other organizations: Human Rights Defenders Protection Unit, National Movement for Human Rights, & Communication Association for Art and Peace. Their files were searched, and computers and film equipment were stolen. On the morning of Feb. 5, as members of these groups waited for the authorities to arrive, a red Toyota Corolla drove by and filmed the group.

Also on Feb. 5, a note was left on the windshield of CALDH lawyer Angèlica Gonzàlez, saying: "Stop bothering with protection, protect yourself which you do not understand despite so much warning, tell Pancho [CALDH's legal coordinator] to take care of himself and his children and the wife that is always alone, we see them and you Lawyer-Gangster pieces of shit that only want money. Look for another job but one of these days we will go out for lunch together, as always it's on us. Understand, you sons of bitches."
El lunes 5 de febrero, una nota fue dejada en el parabrisas del carro de Angélica González, abogada trabajando en el área legal de CALDH. La nota decía: "DEJA DE FASTIDIAR CON PROTECCION PROTEGETE VOS MISMA QUE NO ENTENDES CON TANTO AVISO DECILE AL PANCHO QUE SE CUIDE [...] Y LA MUJER QUE SIEMPRE ESTAN SOLOS SIEMPRE LOS VEMOS Y USTEDES ABOGANSTER DE MIERDA QUE SOLO DINERO QUIEREN BUSQUEN OTRO TRABAJO SINO UN DIA DE ESTOS SALDREMOS A ALMORSAR JUNTOS COMO SIEMPRE NOSOTROS INVITAMOS "ENTIENDEN HIJOS DE PUTA".
