Chomsky's Film "Power and Terror" at Ken Through June 5
,

Noam Chomsky What’s the best way for the United States to stop international terrorism? “Stop participating in it,” says veteran political commentator and linguistics professor Noam Chomsky in the latest of several documentaries about him, “Power and Terror: Noam Chomsky in Our Times,” playing through June 5 at the Ken Cinema, 4061 Adams Avenue in Kensington. Awkwardly titled and even more awkwardly edited — it was taken from two lectures Chomsky gave in March 2002 and an interview filmed with him at his office two months later — it’s nonetheless a compelling film. Chomsky’s analysis of the September 11, 2001 terrorist attacks on the U.S. is available elsewhere — including a small book from Seven Stories Press called simply “9/11,” issued just months after the attack — but there’s a special virtue in seeing and hearing it from his own mouth on film.

City Activists to Discuss Council Scandal May 30!
,

Jess Durfee Is the current investigation of San Diego City Councilmembers Michael Zucchet, Charles Lewis and Ralph Inzunza a badly needed attack on campaign finance corruption or a coup d’état against representative government? Why have Republican Councilmembers who have taken "bundled" contributions from developers been let off scot-free for years while Democrats who allegedly did the same from a strip club are facing prosecution? Five local political activists and election professionals will discuss this issue at the San Diego Action Network meeting FRIDAY, MAY 30, 7 p.m., at the Joyce Beers Community Center, end of Vermont St., north of University Ave. (between Terra and Aladdin Restaurants) in the Uptown District, Hillcrest. The speakers are: JESS DURFEE (pictured), president, San Diego Democratic Club; ROCKY NEPTUN, member, City Heights Planning Council; editor, Street Light newspaper; JOHN McNAB, founder/chair, Save Our N.T.C.; CHRIS CROTTY, local political consultant; and LEE CRAWFORD, chair, San Diego Alliance for Clean Elections. FCC Deregulation Right Around The Corner - Help stop it!
,

Pirate Under the chairmanship of Michael Powell (son of General Colin Powell) the FCC is racing towards massive deregulation of media ownership restrictions. There are five voting commissioners on the FCC. Two -- Michael Copps and Jonathan Adelstein -- have been holding informal hearings across the country. At 7pm, Daniel Sheehan and others will be holding a meeting on FCC deregulation at West Los Angeles College.

Virtually the only readily available media outlet that has been covering this issue at all — especially in the detail it deserves — has been the PBS-TV program NOW WITH BILL MOYERS. Click these links to Moyers' general site on media consolidation and to read his interviews with dissident FCC commissioner Michael Copps, veteran radical media activists John Nichols and Robert McChesney, and a surprising dissident from the big media ranks, USA cable network owner Barry Diller.

Read this Moyers link to discover how the big media companies influenced the FCC Commissioners with all expense-paid trips to lobby them to pass the media consolidation on June 2.

Alternative Memorial Day Demonstration
,

Protesters march through balboa park Over 100 protesters gathered on Saturday in front of the war memorial building for an alternative Memorial Day demonstration. Organized by the San Diego Coalition for Peace and Justice, the message of the demonstration was "No More War!" A number of speakers made speeches about the importance of continuing the movement, creating the future that we want to see, and helping youth to create a just world. The highlight of the event was Fernando Suarez del Solar's speech and his laying of a wreath in front of the War Memorial building to honor his son, who lost his life in the Iraq war. “We are against the war but not against our troops,” said Fernando. “We support the troops when they are troops of peace.”

Local Activists Demonstrate Against FBI Harassment
,

May 19 protest A few dozen activists protested at the San Diego FBI headquarters on 9797 Aero drive on Monday against the treatment of local activist David Agranoff, who has received a grand jury subpoena, and who has been harassed at work and trailed on the street by the FBI. The activists held up signs saying, "Stop grand jury harassment of activists! No compliance!," "Dissent is not a crime," "FBI: hands off our community," "We will not be intimidated," and "Back off, James Motz" (the FBI officer in charge of the case). Agranoff, a San Diego activist, has been ordered to submit hair, saliva, palm and fingerprints for a grand jury investigation in his home state of Indiana. He has refused to submit to this violation of his own rights. The original deadline was Tuesday, May 20, but it has been extended. David at this time has committed no crime and does not know what the subpoena is about. The items which the FBI are demanding (fingerprints and photographs) are available to the FBI due to David's involvement in Civil disobedience protests over the years. That led the protesters to believe this subpoena is simply to harass and intimidate Agranoff and other activists. Read this article on the May 19 protest and view photos in the "comments" section.

PAAW exposes war profiteers
,

bloody hands award A group of 30-50 protesters marched down Balboa Avenue April 16, enacting a mock "tour" of local corporations profitting from the misery and death being enacted in Iraq right now. The police presence was significant, but they didn't engage in their usual abuse of demonstrators. The tour marched up to Lockheed Martin, L-3, Raytheon, Senior Aerospace Jet Products, Cubic, and the Naval Underwater Warfare Center. At each stop a tour guide read a statement about the atrocities enacted by each company and the huge profits they gained. The tour went on for about 2 hours, including a stop in front of Raytheon to sing songs, beat drums, and take a group "tour photo".

F***ing Drummers, Coalition Keep Peace Movement Alive April 11 & 12
,

Photo of April 12 march Despite the sham “victory” the U.S. has claimed in Iraq — even though Baghdad still lacks electricity, looting continues, U.S. troops have been drafted as police officers, the Iraqi people are resisting occupation the same way the Palestinians have (with suicide bombing attacks against their U.S. oppressors), there remains utterly no evidence whatsoeverthat Iraq had any weapons of mass destruction and the whereabouts of Saddam Hussein are still unknown — and despite the continued U.S. threats to carry their despicable imperialist “shock and awe” campaigns to Syria and other countries — the anti-war movement remains alive and well. The F***ing Drummers took the message to the affluent citizens of La Jolla Friday afternoon, April 11, and the following day the San Diego Coalition for Peace and Justice staged a mass rally and march through San Diego’s Gaslamp Quarter. Long live the people’s movement for peace, justice and an end to the capitalist system that generates these imperialist and racist wars as well as repression here at home!

Alternative AIDS Activist Speaks in S.D. April 25 & 26
,

Maggiore and her family “What If Everything You Thought You Knew About AIDS Was Wrong?” That’s the provocative title of Los Angeles activist Christine Maggiore’s 129-page book summarizing an alternative point of view on the most politically charged disease in human history. What we “think” we know about AIDS — that it’s caused by a sexually transmitted virus called HIV; that exposure to HIV almost invariably leads to AIDS and death; that, despite their fierce toxicities, anti-HIV drugs prolong the lives of people with AIDS and lower their risk of AIDS-related diseases; and that the standard HIV antibody tests are over 99 percent accurate and reliable — needs to be re-evaluated and questioned, Maggiore claims. She’ll be presenting her view in San Diego Friday, April 25, 7 p.m. at Current Affairs Bookstore, 2536 University Avenue in North Park; and Saturday, April 26, 3 p.m. at the Ocean Beach People’s Food Co-Op, 4765 Voltaire Street at Sunset Cliffs Boulevard. Read this article and a previous interview with Maggiore, as well as this interview with Maggiore's husband, filmmaker Robin Scovill.

HISTORY and what actions will take place locally
,

we are an army of dreamers May 1st, International Workers' Day, commemorates the historic struggle of working people throughout the world and is recognized in most countries. The United States of America and Canada are among the exceptions. Despite the fact that the holiday began in the 1880s in the USA, May 1st is linked to the battle for the eight-hour day and the Chicago anarchists. With workers being forced to work ten, twelve, and fourteen hours a day, rank-and-file support for the eight-hour movement grew rapidly, despite the indifference and hostility of many union leaders. So let's organize to commemorate their battle victory in a war which continues even today. Plans will be announced asap

Authors, Officials Speak for Peace and Justice
,

Howard Zinn San Diegans recently got some antidotes to the pro-war drivel passing for commentary on the “public" airwaves and major newspapers these days. Four powerful speakers — three authors and one California elected official — spoke at public meetings during the week of March 31-April 4 to offer alternative perspectives to the ones the corporate media are shoving down our throats.

HOWARD ZINN (pictured), author of A People's History of the United States and regular contributor to The Progressive and other non-corporate periodicals, appeared April 3 and served as the keynote speaker for a convention at USD. After speaking at USD Zinn went downtown to talk with a packed house of interested activists. See the photos from Voz Alta.

GREG PALAST, expatriate investigative journalist, spoke at the First Unitarian-Universalist Church April 2 and exposed the Bush/bin Laden connections, the corruption of the 2000 election process in Florida and what the war is really about. View announcement of a Palast speech 4/12 in CT.

MARK HERTSGAARD, author of The Eagle's Shadow: How America Fascinates and Infuriates the World, spoke at Current Affairs Bookstore March 31 and discussed how the rest of the world perceives Americans as arrogant and how that shaped their opposition to the war against Iraq.

California attorney general BILL LOCKYER discussed how he was able to use the powers of his office to stop the Riverside Police Department from harassing Blacks, Latinos and Queers and how he joined 21 other state attorneys-general to defend affirmative action before the U.S. Supreme Court.
