Queer Demos Prioritize Busby Race
Mark Gabrish Conlan/Zenger’s Newsmagazine,

Francine Busby Despite her disappointing five-point loss to Republican lobbyist Brian Bilbray in the June 6 special election to fill the Congressional seat left vacant by Randy "Duke" Cunningham's bribery conviction, Francine Busby got a heroine's welcome from the predominantly Queer San Diego Democratic Club August 24. The club voted to make hers a priority campaign, which means they will make special efforts to mobilize volunteers and donate money for her rematch against Bilbray this Movember.

Tijuana Report On the Edge: Juarez Femicides
Yolanda,

Sara Ruiz, whose daughter Sarita was murdered in Tijuana Between 70 and 80 people were in attendance at the Teatro de la Casa de la Cultura in Tijuana for Steev Hise's film On the Edge: The Femicides in Ciudad Juarez.

Lourdes Diaz, Director of Tijuana’s Women’s Municipal Institute gave the introduction. After the film about 80% of the audience stayed for over an hour of discussion with Steev Hise and Mrs. Sara Ruiz, moderated by Carmen Valadez of the Feminist Binational Collective.

Mrs. Ruiz’s daughter Sarita was abducted, assaulted and thrown from a moving car last December on to the streets of Tijuana by Pueblo Amigo, about four blocks away from the San Ysidro Port of Entry. She died six days later. Mrs. Ruiz carried out a 9-day hunger strike in June and says many mothers whose daughters have been victimized are afraid to speak out and have asked her to carry on for them also.

Majority awareness and actions are needed to halt and stop the spread of out-of-control atrocities. As evidenced by the reception of the screenings in San Diego and Tijuana this last week, On the Edge is an important step in this direction.

Juarez Femicides Film Screening
queer-j brad,

Mothers of Juarez For more than a decade, the cities of Chihuahua and Juarez, near the US-Mexico border, have been killing fields for young women, the site of over 400 unsolved femicides. Despite the horrific nature of these crimes, authorities at all levels exhibit indifference, and there is strong evidence that some officials may be involved. Impunity and corruption has permitted the criminals, whoever they are, to continue committing these acts, knowing there will be no consequences.

A significant number of victims work in the maquiladora sector - sweatshops that produce for export with 90% destined for the United States. Despite the crime wave, they offer almost no protection for their workers.

Small advances in the struggle for justice are due to the perseverance of victims' families who cannot be silenced despite the efforts of state and federal authorities to keep them quiet. Often grassroots groups work in a climate of threats and defamation by government officials for making one simple demand - STOP THE FEMICIDE!

On Wednesday, 26 July, SDIMC, in collaboration with the Young Adult Mystery Squad and Voz Alta, showed two documentaries concerning the situation in Juarez at the First Unitarian Universalist Church in Hillcrest: On the Edge, by Steev Hise, and The Mothers of Juarez, by Zulma Aguiar. Steev Hise introduced the films and answered questions following the films. Audio Duration: 1min 50sec, 1min and 27min 50sec.

Film Screening: Juarez Femicides -- July 26th

Juarez Mothers FILM SCREENING:
On the Edge: The Juarez Femicides by Steev Hise
The Mothers of Juarez by Zulma Aguiar
Discussion with Steev Hise
Wed July 26 6:30 p.m.
Bard Hall, First Unitarian Universalist Church
4190 Front St. Hillcrest
$5 Donation Proceeds to Nuestras Hijas de Regreso A Casa (May Our Daughters Return Home) and SDIMC.

For more than a decade, the cities of Chihuahua and Juarez, near the US-Mexico border, have been killing fields for young women, the site of over 400 unsolved femicides. Despite the horrific nature of these crimes, authorities at all levels exhibit indifference, and there is strong evidence that some officials may be involved. Impunity and corruption has permitted the criminals, whoever they are, to continue committing these acts, knowing there will be no consequences.
Small advances in the struggle for justice are due to the perseverance of victims' families who cannot be silenced despite the efforts of state and federal authorities to keep them quiet. Campaigns by local, national and international non-governmental organizations are also important. Often grassroots groups work in a climate of threats and defamation by government officials for making one simple demand - STOP THE FEMICIDE!

Rather than provide an easy, murder-mystery style solution to the crimes, On The Edge sets out to explain the social, cultural, and economic factors that have created this situation where the killings can continue, and continue to go unpunished.

Anarchist Elected City Commissioner in FL
Mark,

anarchist Cara Jennings, an anarchist, has just been elected to the City Commission in Lake Worth, Florida.

Jennings was greatly outspent by big developers and sugar interests. Turns out people in Lake Worth don't like big developers and sugar interests.

Seems to me we could use a few good anarchists on our City Council and Board of Supervisors here in San Diego. Anybody feel like running for office?

"I and other anarchists believe that there should be no hierarchy, and that all decisions should be made on a community level by individuals on a voluntary basis."

"So it’s been difficult running for office and acknowledging that I’m putting myself in a perceived and sometimes real position of power over other people. The reason that people are excited to see me out there, like at an immigration rally, is because they know, whether I like it or not, that I have additional power that they don’t have. I don’t want to claim the assumed power that comes with winning an elected office, but at the same time, I’m in this position to leverage that power, and be outspoken about things that are wrong and receive attention for that. I don’t know really how you do that without falling into that trap of getting credit for a position of power that shouldn’t exist in the first place. It’s challenging."

"The practical reality is that in Lake Worth there’s not a large anarchist community, and there’s not even a large progressive community. So in order to make a better impact, I decided to run for office. I don’t think it was the most anarchist thing to do, but it was a responsible thing to do."

Audio: Discussion of Human Trafficking
queer-j brad,

Manolo Guillén On March 28 at Voz Alta, SDIMC and the San Diego Chapter of the Peace and Freedom Party presented the film Darkside of Cancun, which exposes the sharp economic divide between wealthy tourists and indigenous peoples in the resort town of Cancun, Mexico, and the widespread sex tourism and trafficking in women and children in Cancun. Following the film, Manolo Guillén, Program Manager for the B-SAFFE Project on Human Trafficking at San Diego Youth and Community Services, spoke about the human trafficking in the San Diego/Tijuana region, and Austin Choi-Fitzpatrick, outreach coordinator for Free the Slaves and lecturer in Political Science at San Diego State University, spoke about the global context within which human trafficking takes place.

Leslie Feinberg Lecture: brief report back
concerned student,

. Leslie Feinberg spoke earlier today (3/28/2006) on the SDSU campus at 2PM in Hepner Hall 221, as close to 200 students filled the seats, stairs, and floors with eager faces. Leslie talked about his experience as a lesbian / transgender / genderqueer in the struggle for gay liberation and his experience as an activist who relates to the struggles of people of color because it was the right thing to do at the time and still is. Leslie mentioned the inspiration he has received from the large turnouts in Los Angeles and other cities in opposition to the Senssenbrenner bill HR 4437. Leslie ended the speech by addressing the struggle of Pat Washington, who was fired from the Womens Studies Dept in 2002 and has is suing SDSU for discrimination. After most of the audience had gone, a couple of women from the department began their defensive attack against what they felt was Leslie's attack on them.

Art and Revolution … Re-examining Frida Kahlo
E.A. Barrera, Espresso Newspaper,

Pat Washington, Ph.D. appeal support
posted by Pat Washington supporter,

When I filed my retaliation complaint against the Women's Studies Department at San Diego State University with the Chancellor's office, SDSU hired an attorney, Nancy Spiezny, to investigate. Spiezny is one of the "civil rights" attorneys SDSU routinely hires to conduct investigations of complaints against the university. Spiezny found evidence of many "troubling" actions against me, but ultimately concluded that "the weight of the evidence did not support my discrimination and retaliation complaint. "

When we challenged her findings, pointing out many of the flaws in her own arguments and evidence that she was taking undue license in explaining away what had happened to me, I came to understand that finding in favor of SDSU represents repeat business for Spiezny, I didn't. The EEOC later investigated and found "reasonable cause" that I had been discriminated and retaliated against and urged SDSU to take corrective action, including promotion and tenure, back-pay, benefits and tenure.

Judge Jay Bloom, who is up for reelection on June 6th, later granted SDSU a summary judgment motion, indicating that it was obvious that my WS colleagues "didn't like me" but that nothing could be done about that in a court of law.

The Court of Appeals will hear oral arguments in my case on March 16th at 9am.

European Writers Defend Cartoons!
repost by pipard,

US Left makes common cause with reactionary 8th Century Fascists! While many in the U.S. Left trip over themselves in typical Workers World-like tailist fashion to suck up to the "offended" Islamo-fascists on the controversial "Cartoon Question", brighter and braver folks on the other side of the Atlantic are taking a more principled and progressive stand. Here is the Manifesto of some Europeon Writers supporting freedom of speech and opposing Islamo-fascism.
