Salvadoran Refugee Tells His Story … Again
Mark Gabrish Conlan/Zenger’s Newsmagazine,
Oskar Torres, actor and screenwriter whose remarkable personal story formed the basis of the film "Innocent Voices," came to San Diego December 30 to introduce the film at a showing sponsored by Activist San Diego to raise money for Salvadoran textile workers. The film tells the story of Chava, an 11-year-old boy growing up in El Salvador during that country's civil war in the 1980's and trying to avoid being kidnapped and forced to serve in the U.S.-backed military against a popular armed struggle.

RIZAL IN THE U.S.A.
E. SAN JUAN, Jr.,
The anniversary of the death of the Philippines' national hero Jose Rizal this Dec. 30 affords us the occasion to reassess his work, particularly in the context of ongoing fierce class war in the Philippines between the oppressed, impoverished majority and the few privileged landlords and politicians bought by global capital. This is taking place at a time when the Philippines is being re-colonized by the U.S., the world's imperialist hegemon. Would Rizal want the country partitioned by greedy transnational corporations and their racist elites in the brutal terrorist war against peoples of color? These reflections hope to provoke a re-thinking of what it means to be a Filipino with the Philippines in dire crisis, using Rizal as a point of departure, especially in the light of its citizens becoming an embattled diaspora--more than ten million OFWs as exploited domestics and contract workers scattered around the planet, while the country's rich natural resources, cultures and traditions are wasted by foreign profiteers supported by local comprador parasites currently headed by the corrupt Arroyo regime. "O where is the hope of the motherland...."?

Buy Nothing Christmas
,
Introducing Buy Nothing Christmas
This Christmas we'll be swamped with offers, ads and invitations to buy more stuff. But now there's a way to say enough and join a movement dedicated to reviving the original meaning of Christmas giving.
Buy Nothing Christmas is a national initiative started by Canadian Mennonites but open to everyone with a thirst for change and a desire for action.
Buy Nothing Christmas is a stress-reliever, and more people need to hear about it. You can change your world by simply putting up one of the posters (or make your own) in your church, place of worship, home or work. Be sneaky about it if you have to. The point is to get people thinking. It's an idea whose time has come, so get out there and make a difference!

International Human Rights Organization Opposes HR4437
AFSC,
The American Friends Service Committee (AFSC) vehemently opposes the anti-immigrant Border Protection, Antiterrorism, and Illegal Immigration Control Act of 2005 (HR 4437), which has been introduced by House Judiciary Committee Chairman James Sensenbrenner (R-WI). This bill does little to address the root causes of migration to the United States, or the underlying social and economic conditions of both legal and undocumented workers.

Mass protests meet WTO in Hong Kong
from www.indymedia.org,
The 6th Ministerial Conference of the WTO is taking place from December 13th through 18th in Hong Kong. Negotiations have been continuing on key controversial issues such as agriculture, services, and market access for industrial goods and natural resources. The meeting will shape the final agreement of the Doha Development Agenda, which members hope to complete next year. What is wrong with the WTO? Conferences, cultural events, mass mobilizations, and direct actions are being planned for the dates between December 11th and 18th. Organizations that are mobilizing to protest the WTO meeting and corporate globalization, and to present alternative proposals, include peasants and small farmers from the Philippines, Indonesia, Taiwan, Thailand, and Korea. Events: A new media and social transformation conference and workshop will take place in early December. Global Exchange will bring a delegation/reality tour to Hong Kong and parts of China in December. >>> Latest news: (and more from outside and inside the WTO negotiations).
