"The Revolution Will Not Be Televised"
Mark Gabrish Conlan,
When Irish TV documentarians Kim Bartley and Donnacha O'Briain went to Venezuela in late 2001 to start a film about the country's populist president, Hugo Chavez, little did they know they'd be at Miraflores, Venezuela's White House, when a plot hatched by army officers, corporate bureaucrats and the private owners of five of the country's six TV stations organized a march aimed at forcing Chavez from power. For two days the coup -- supported, if not sponsored, by the U.S. -- succeeded in setting up a transitional government and holding Chavez under arrest, until a popular uprising supported by Chavez's Presidential Guard led to his restoration. The resulting film, "The Revolution Will Not Be Televised," shows from Friday, December 5 through Thursday, December 11, 5:05 and 9:40 p.m., at Landmark's Ken Cinema, 4061 Adams Avenue, (619) 819-0236.

Venezuela?s slum army takes over
Reed Lindsay, London Observer,
The movement of the Left in Venezuela is moving beyond the preservation of embattled, populist president Hugo Chavez in power. Poor and working-class Venezuelans are increasingly forming "citizens' assemblies," similar to the "autonomous collectives" of the Zapatista movement in Mexico and the unemployed workers' groups in Argentina, to take more of the traditional functions of government into their own hands and challenge private ownership of land and the media.

Free Trade Proponents Cut Their Losses in Miami!
sdimc,
In Miami yesterday the FTAA decided to cut their losses with a "success" rather than allowing the talks to break down. The agreement that was signed consists of several key points, but each is to be negotiated individually in the future. None of the details that would have led to disagreement were discussed. In the streets the security forces used oppressive tactics. Hector de la Cerva Mexican Action Network on Free Trade commented that this was one of the most undemocratic protest environments he had ever seen. Riot cops used storm trooper tactics to clear the streets. They shot rubber bullets and tear gas at the protesters. Several protesters were arrested. Later at a jail solidarity rally, police moved in, dispersed the crowd and then attacked and arrested more activists. late, breaking news at FTAA IMC | Police disregard protesters' belongings | Silly Reporters, embedding is for WAR! | Good collection of IMC articles and other media | Democracy Now!
