CRISIS IN THE PHILIPPINES
E. SAN JUAN, Jr.,

A critical analysis of the inherent contradictions in the Arroyo regime in the Philippines would reveal the logic of irreversible fascist decay. While objective conditions have polarized and sharpened the divisions within the ruling bloc, the subjective forces of national democracy and anti-imperialism have not fully organized and united enough to deliver the decisive blow. Meanwhile, the U.S. and its agents are working behind the scenes to pick a successor to Arroyo and re-consolidate its neocolonial stranglehold. But will millions of concerned Filipinos allow the U.S. and its "guns, goons and gold" to determine again our collective fate and national destiny?

U.S. threatens military action against Iran
Sara Flounders,

The script of the Iranian nuclear threat is a rehash of the lead-up to the 2003 criminal invasion of Iraq. At that time every arm of the U.S. and British media gave extensive, daily coverage to charges that Iraq had dangerous weapons of mass destruction, chemical and nuclear. It was all a fraud. The major corporate media went along and endlessly hyped every fabrication, as did the leaders of both political parties. They never admitted what was so obvious after 12 years of relentless war, sanctions and inspections: Iraq had no WMDs.

"Why We Fight" Opens Today at Ken Cinema
Mark Gabrish Conlan/Zenger's Newsmagazine,

Eugene Jarecki's "Why We Fight," a powerful documentary on the imperialist agenda that has dominated U.S. foreign policy since the end of World War II, opens today (Friday, February 17) at the Ken Cinema in Kensington. Directed by Eugene Jarecki, the new film begins with former President Eisenhower's famous 1961 warning against "unwarranted influence, whether sought or unsought, by the military-industrial complex" and shows how that "complex" has become an integral and almost ineradicable part of American society. "Why We Fight" represents a major political advance over Jarecki's previous film, "The Trials of Henry Kissinger" — whereas "Kissinger" was a liberal film, "Why We Fight" is a radical one.

John Francis/The Man Who Wouldn't Talk
Mark Gabrish Conlan/Zenger's Newsmagazine,

John Francis, Ph.D. John Francis was a 24-year-old African-American hippie living in Marin County in 1971, when an accident between two oil tankers in San Francisco Bay changed his life. For the next 19 years he embarked on a worldwide odyssey, refusing to use ANY motorized transportation to take responsibility for the world's use of fossil fuels, and spending 17 years without speaking so he would be forced to listen to the world and the people around him. While maintaining his commitment to remain silent and not use motor vehicles, he nonetheless went to three universities and got a Ph.D. in environmental studies, which he later used as an environmental ambassador for the United Nations and an advisor to the U.S. Coast Guard on what to do about oil spills.

The Terrorists’ Veto
Mark Gabrish Conlan/Zenger's Newsmagazine,

The current controversy over the Danish newspaper Jyllands-Posten's commissioning and publication of 12 cartoons depicting and caricaturing Muhammad is proof that the so-called "war on terror" really IS a clash of civilization. Despite the legitimacy of some Muslim grievances against the West (particularly the ongoing Israeli occupation of Palestine and the U.S. aggression against Iraq), the attack on the cartoons by an organization of 56 Muslim nations and street activists constitutes an attempt to use the threat of terrorism to force Western media to abide by the medieval laws of Islam at its most intolerant. Jyllands-Posten culture editor Flemming Rose is a hero of free speech and the cartoons should be reproduced in all Western media.

Demonstrations Grow Against Anti-Immigrant Legislation
indymedia.us,

Alarm and opposition is growing nationwide to HR 4437, the Border Protection, Antiterrorism, and Illegal Immigration Control Act of 2005. The proposed legislation, which passed in the house in December, would declare all undocumented workers "aggravated felons." [In-Depth Coverage on Indybay]

On Saturday, the Coalition of Latino Pastors of Northeast Ohio organized a protest at the new office of House Rep. Ted Strickland, one of 16 democrats who voted in favor of the bill. On Tuesday, hundreds gathered in Philadelphia for a day-long strike organized by El Paro. Strikers called on employers to wake up to the potentially devastating effects of the bill. Israeli President Moshe Katzav aids fraud
Tony Ryals,

One can say of Saddam Hussein what they wish but to my knowledge Mr.Hussein never aided a penny stock fraud of a mafia connected con artist who may well be responsible for tens of millions of dollars if not well over $100,000,000 + in frauds against Americans caught up in his penny stock scams over the years. Israeli President Moshe Katzav gets credit for that....

CWD Presents The Miami Model at UCSD Friday
lotu5 for sd indymedia,

The Miami Model @ UCSD, Fri Feb 17th, 7pm Committee for World Democracy Political/Educational Film Series
Center Hall 109 Friday, Feb 17th, 7:00PM
Cost: FREE

THE MIAMI MODEL- In November, 2003, trade ministers from 34 countries met in Miami, Florida, to negotiate the Free Trade Area of the Americas (FTAA). Thousands of union members, environmentalists, feminists, anarchists, students, farm workers, media activists, and human rights activists who gathered in Miami to struggle against the FTAA were brutally attacked with rubber bullets, pepper spray, electric guns and shock batons, embedded reporters and information warfare, all coordinated by the new United States Department of Homeland Security. Against Capital's model of paramilitary oppression, information warfare, and corporate rule, we offered models of grassroots resistance, creative action and solidarity.

Indymedia Oncampus volunteer Michael Cardenas will be on hand to talk about Indymedia and the filmmaking process behind the Miami Model.

ASF in Caracas: voices from the left
Alternative Social Forum,

* In Caracas, Venezuela between the 23rd and 29th of January 2006, 10 local socio-political organizations offered an alternative forum and critique of national politics in response to the World Social Forum. The result was a smaller-scale event but self-directed and reflective of current self-organizing capacity. The alternative forum was independent, self-managed and borne out of years of experience of organizing in the Venezuelan context.

Porter Goss: CIA Cyber and stock fraud ops
Tony Ryals,

Ionatron that was a CIA investment that was 'touted' or promoted over the internet to increase demand and price of its shares that the CIA employee-investors then dumped on the market thus decreasing other investors share price, basically defrauding them...If the CIA wishes to use 911 to promote lesser civil liberties from now into the future perhaps they should at least pledge not to invest in and thus tamper with our stock markets.
