Zapatista! the Movie at Voz Alta, Wed, Apr 26 7pm
sdimc,

UPDATE: Correction on times. The Tactical Ice Cream Unit will be on hand from 7-8pm, with a presentation from 7:00-7:30. The film will start at 7:30pm.

From June 17-19th, Delegate Zero of the Zapatistas will be coming to Tijuana as part of La Otra Campana. People will converge on San Diego and Tijuana from all over the US for this historical opportuniy to meet the Zapatistas first hand and take part in La Otra Campana, a new campaign aimed at radically transforming politics through coordination of groups on the left organizing outside of electoral politics against capitalism. A member of the o.r.g.a.n.i.c. collective will speak about the plans for June and what you can do to help!

FILM SCREENING, Wednesday, April 26, 2006: ZAPATISTA! is an inspiring first-hand account of a struggle that will challenge the way you think about the world. Armed with sticks and words against a 'First World' military, the Zapatistas were able to hold their ground. Ignored by a mainstream press, the Zapatistas have used poems, children's stories, videos, and the internet, to permanently transform the political imagination of a nation.

The film starts at 7:00pm at Voz Alta on 1544 Broadway, downtown San Diego. $3-$5 donation, light refreshments. Learn more at:  http://www.bignoisefilms.com/zap

Also, the Tactical Ice Cream Unit will be on hand as part of the Center for Tactical Magic's West Coast tour! The Tactical Ice Cream Unit (TICU) rolls through the city in an act of intervention that replaces cold stares with frosty treats and nourishing knowledge. Combining a number of successful activist strategies (Food-Not-Bombs, Copwatch, Indymedia, infoshops, etc) into one mega-mobile, the TICU is the Voltron-like alter-ego of the cops' mobile command center. Macho Men and State Capitalism ...
Hanna Dahlstrom,

* Latin America is boiling with revolutionary potential these days that could redefine economics, politics and social relations. But sometimos things aren't always as they seem. Venezuelan President Hugo Chavez is widely seen to be at the center of Latin America's transformation by building a regional trade bloc through the creation of ALBA and Venezuela's membership in Mercosur to oppose U.S. dominance and its constant push for free trade agreements with Latin American governments.

May 1st 2006: General Strike | Huelga General | Boycott | Walkout | Buy Nothing | Sell Nothing
graphic by schock at riseup d0t net

Quick on the heels of the massive March 25th mobilizations and the student walkouts during the following week, April 10th was a historic day of action for immigrant rights across the USA. Tens of thousands of people took the streets in Los Angeles [ 1 | 2 ] and in Santa Ana, while 5,000 marched in St. Louis and 10,000 raised their voices in the largest march in Fresno's history. San Diego also made history with a march of up to 100,000 people on April 9th. There were mobilizations in the Bay Area, in Tennessee, in Rochester, NY, and in DC. In Portland, up to 8,000 marched, while thousands gathered in Love Park in Philly. Allies mobilized in Pittsburgh. In Arizona, people were on the move in Flagstaff. There were major marches and actions in NYC and Boston, and Houston Indymedia provided a blow by blow of actions in Texas. In Puerto Rico, hundreds took the streets of Barrio Obrero. (These amazing stories are just a small sample of coverage of April 10th actions across the country; for more go to your local IMC.) Congress has been forced to backpeddle on brutal anti-immigrant legislation, but they are nowhere near to meeting the demands of the movement, especially amnesty for all. So the movement for immigrant justice keeps rising, with more major actions planned in the coming weeks: April 15th is a student day of action, and May 1st will be a historic day of action, with calls for a general strike, boycott, no sales or purchases, walkouts, marches, and actions in financial centers and at anti-immigrant corporations throughout the country.

New Grand Jury Convened in SF
indybay, reposted by sd indymedia,

one of three SF G8 arrestees in 2005 SF Grand Jury Targets G8 Protest & Independent Journalist - Yet another Federal Grand Jury in San Francisco targeting local activists has been convened. This time the apparent reason for the Grand Jury is to investigate the anti-G8 solidarity protest held in the Mission District of San Francisco on July 8, 2005, during which a local police officer was injured. Charges against three people in connection with the protest are pending in San Francisco Superior Court. Independent journalist and videographer Josh Wolf, a frequent poster to Indybay, has been subpoenaed to testify and to provide any notes taken and the full and unedited videotape recorded during the demonstration. The National Lawyers Guild is representing Josh Wolf and has filed a motion to quash the subpoena on several grounds including First Amendment journalistic protections and that the FBI is on an illegal "fishing expedition" aimed at aiding the separate local investigation by San Francisco police and prosecutors. On March 30th, a press conference was held on the steps of the San Francisco Federal Building before the hearing on quashing the subpoena. A written decision on the motion will be delivered at a later date. Josh Wolf urges people "to talk to your friends and neighbors about how the grand jury system (is) a vicious unconstitutional implementation of the law that is being used for political purposes."

Leslie Feinberg Lecture: brief report back
concerned student,

. Leslie Feinberg spoke earlier today (3/28/2006) on the SDSU campus at 2PM in Hepner Hall 221, as close to 200 students filled the seats, stairs, and floors with eager faces. Leslie talked about his experience as a lesbian / transgender / genderqueer in the struggle for gay liberation and his experience as an activist who relates to the struggles of people of color because it was the right thing to do at the time and still is. Leslie mentioned the inspiration he has received from the large turnouts in Los Angeles and other cities in opposition to the Senssenbrenner bill HR 4437. Leslie ended the speech by addressing the struggle of Pat Washington, who was fired from the Womens Studies Dept in 2002 and has is suing SDSU for discrimination. After most of the audience had gone, a couple of women from the department began their defensive attack against what they felt was Leslie's attack on them.

The Culeros Get Chased Out - La Gran Marcha

A short clip from La Gran Marcha 2006, a massive march in Los Angeles against HR4437 and for amnesty. The corproate media put the size of the march at 500,000. Univision said the march was 2 million people. The police and mayor said it was the largest protest they have ever seen. What happens when 30 riot cops try to enter into a crowd of that size?

FILIPINOS IN THE U.S. AND AROUND THE WORLD
E. SAN JUAN, Jr.,

About ten million Filipinos are now scattered in the U.S. and around the world, chiefly as exploited migrant labor. Meanwhile, 87 million Filipinos--with the exception of a tiny privileged minority--are suffering and resisting the current repressive regime in a rapidly deteriorating neocolonized social order. The Philippines has one of the most durable and vibrant revolutionary traditions in the whole world--the first Asian people to revolt against Western (Spanish) colonialism. 4.1 million Filipinos died opposing U.S. domination in the Filipino American War at the turn of the last century. Today Filipinos are engaged in a popular democratic revolutionary process against U.S. imperialism and its local agents. Can overseas Filipinos contribute to the radical transformation of a world afflicted by the atrocities and terrors of global capitalism?
