Former Ugandan Parliament Member Speaks in SD
Mark Gabrish Conlan/Zenger’s Newsmagazine,

Miria Matembe Miria Matembe, former member of the parliament of Uganda and longtime women's rights activist there, spoke at the Mission Valley library July 2 and rankled many local activists — including Ugandan émigrés — with her insistence that the government's treatment of the Acholi people in the north is not an act of genocide but an attempt to protect them against terrorists. Matembe also described the horrible state of Uganda's rape and domestic violence laws and the issue that led her to break with her long-time ally, Ugandan president Yoweri Museveni: his insistence on amending the constitution so he could run for a third term as president.

Palast Skewers Democrats in New Book
Mark Gabrish Conlan/Zenger’s Newsmagazine,

Greg Palast (file photo) Journalist, economist and activist Greg Palast came to San Diego June 10 in defiance of his publishers to promote his new book, "Armed Madhouse." The book attacks American politicians of both major parties and celebrates independent figures like Venezuelan president Hugo Chávez, former U.S. Presidential candidate H. Ross Perot and the late Louisiana governor Huey Long. It also offers a provocative explanation of what the war in Iraq is really about — not getting Iraq's oil, but quite the contrary: keeping it off the market in order to raise the price and increase the already swollen profits of Big Oil.

Mexico's Continuing Revolution: A Dispatch
rocky neptun,

Whether the election is stolen or not, the Mexican people and its continuing revolution will be strengthened today.

Today, Mexicans will move to the left. They have no choice. The forces of greed and privilege continue to exploit workers, destroy the rural economy (under U.S. dominated trade laws), and stands poised to hand over to foreign corporate control all of Mexico's natural resources - oil, gas, water, and, even, the land itself.

The big question for this evening, will be whether the Mexican power structure will allow democracy to work; whether they will turn over the Presidency to Andres Manuel Lopez Obredor.

Tony Ryals,

I believe the unaccounted for and unaudited penny stocks alone that the SEC and the W Bush administration allow to be pumped dumped around the world not only can aid money laundering but drug trafficking and terrorism or even political dirty tricks. Skyway Communications, that both Titan Corp of San Diego,California and Jeb Bush's Florida Department of Transportation promoted in press releases as a viable and credible company, used both to promote(pump) and dump worthless shares on defrauded investors. And again,Saudis or Arabs and right wing Israelis were both involved !

Viva Evo Morales
Faruque Ahmed,

There was a guarded reaction from the oil club, including BP and BG
Group. They are modest players (British Gas gets less than 3 per cent
of its production from Bolivia) compared with Petrobras of Brazil,
which accounts for more than 45 per cent of Bolivia's gas production.
But the latest manifestation of the political shift in Latin America
is producing food for thought in the boardrooms of oil companies and
other foreign investors.

Anarchist Elected City Commissioner in FL
Mark,

anarchist Cara Jennings, an anarchist, has just been elected to the City Commission in Lake Worth, Florida.

Jennings was greatly outspent by big developers and sugar interests. Turns out people in Lake Worth don't like big developers and sugar interests.

Seems to me we could use a few good anarchists on our City Council and Board of Supervisors here in San Diego. Anybody feel like running for office?

"I and other anarchists believe that there should be no hierarchy, and that all decisions should be made on a community level by individuals on a voluntary basis."

"So it’s been difficult running for office and acknowledging that I’m putting myself in a perceived and sometimes real position of power over other people. The reason that people are excited to see me out there, like at an immigration rally, is because they know, whether I like it or not, that I have additional power that they don’t have. I don’t want to claim the assumed power that comes with winning an elected office, but at the same time, I’m in this position to leverage that power, and be outspoken about things that are wrong and receive attention for that. I don’t know really how you do that without falling into that trap of getting credit for a position of power that shouldn’t exist in the first place. It’s challenging."

"The practical reality is that in Lake Worth there’s not a large anarchist community, and there’s not even a large progressive community. So in order to make a better impact, I decided to run for office. I don’t think it was the most anarchist thing to do, but it was a responsible thing to do."

L.A. Urban Garden Eviction Update
Mark,

The backbreaking work and careful cultivation over 14 years of small plots sown with food and medicinal plants was destroyed by bulldozers in hours.

Remember your pre-school days, when you would carefully pile up a stack of blocks only to have some bully come along and gleefully knock them over? Those bullies have grown up and are now the CEOs of multinational corporations and big developers like Horowitz in L.A.

Mike Davis on Slums
queer-j brad,

Mike Davis On May 11 in International House's Great Hall at UCSD, urbanist, author and Professor of History at UC Irvine Mike Davis spoke to an audience of about 200 people about slums. Citing the UN-Habitat report, "The Challenge of Slums," Davis outlined the tragic facts about slums, including 1 billion current slum dwellers, an overlapping 1 billion people with no formal connection to their national or the global economy, and 2-3 billion people over the next half century most likely destined for slums. Summarizing his recent book, "Planet of Slums," Davis argued that slum expansion has reached a limit - an absence of free squatable land and the declining ability of slum dwellers to occupy survival niches has given rise to sectarian violence, child abandonment and other rational responses to desperate circumstances. He concluded with the hopeful picture of slums as incubators for burgeoning resistance movements.

A Long Walk Home: Moving Film on Sudan
Mark Gabrish Conlan/Zenger’s Newsmagazine,

Filmmaker Grace Smith "A Long Walk Home," a 42-minute documentary on Sudan produced by a team of San Diego filmmakers and directed by Tiffany Frances Huang, was shown at the Media Arts Center in San Diego May 18 and proved to be an intensely moving depiction of the plight of southern Sudanese refugees stuck in Cairo, Egypt. They flee there in hopes of getting help from the United Nations High Commission on Refugees (UNHCR) — only to wait months or even years before the commission even opens a file on their case. The film isn't all depressing, though; it also shows the dance and theatre group some of the refugees formed to keep their spirits up and celebrate Sudanese culture. Grace Smith, a member of the filmmaking team, appeared at the showing and took questions.

“Munich” on DVD: Spielberg’s Masterpiece
Mark Gabrish Conlan/Zenger’s Newsmagazine,

Steven Spielberg's film "Munich" was released on DVD on May 8 after a disappointing box office in its theatrical run — largely due to attacks by Right-wing critics who hated the film's moral complexity. All the more reason for progressives to see it: its in-depth depiction of the morals of the so-called "war on terror" and whether, in adopting anything-goes tactics against terrorists, we reduce ourselves to their moral level, makes it not only a must-see but quite likely Spielberg's masterpiece.

Solidarity Statement by U.S. Prisoners
Mark,

U.S. prisoner organizations have issued a statement of solidarity with those fighting for the rights of workers in France and the U.S.

"As those struggling for freedom in the context of the anti-prison movement, we as affiliates of the Allied Resistance Network send our strongest wishes of solidarity to the re-emerging workers' and migrants' movements spreading across the globe. We fight the same fight, whether it is in the streets, our workplaces, or the prison yard.

The movements for freedom do not exist separately from each other. Here in the United States, where over 2 million of the poorest populations are locked away in cages, we know firsthand the hardships and horrors of a society based on exploitation and authoritarian power structures that give the few the control over the many.
