Starbucks Adds Rats in the Cupboards to Rats in the Boardroom
nobux,

anti-starbux demo in hillcrest, 2002 (with apologies to rats for comparing them to corporate monsters)

The primary role of Starbucks in society seems to be to destroy local businesses and exploit workers in this country and others in the pursuit of obscene profits.

Starbucks serves milk containing genetically engineered recombinant bovine growth hormone, a danger to dairy cow and human health, and only a tiny percentage of their coffee, 3,7%, is fair trade.

Starbucks is strongly anti-union, squashing workers' rights by intimidating and firing union organizers for the nascent Industrial Workers of the World Starbucks Workers Union, including the recent termination of IWW barista Daniel Gross. The IWW filed a complaint with OSHA over unsafe working conditions associated with rats and roaches at 44 NYC Sbux outlets.

Starbucks attacks local businesses with buy-outs, "cluster bombing" tactics, and market cannibalization. Starbucks outlets recently opened across from popular local businesses in two central San Diego locations: Urban Grind in Hillcrest and Claire de Lune in North Park. The Ocean Beach Grassroots Organization has been fighting Starbucks and other chain stores for years.

The Starbucks website lists over 200 stores in San Diego County.

I think you know what to do.

Introducing Ghost Troop to the Army Inspector
Captain Eric H. May,

The strange near-death of an active Army Ghost Troop seems more than suspicious, as the unit leader, Captain May, explains in this most revealing report to the Army Inspector General. Are Ghost Troops, who serve on a mission of conscience to spread the word about the 911 set up -- and prevent future ones -- on the Bush League hit list?

FREE ALL POLITICAL PRISONERS IN PHILIPPINES
E. San Juan, Jr.,

The massive human rights violations in the Philippines perpetrated by the illegitimate Arroyo regime have been universally condemned throughout the world. Amnesty International, UN Human Rights Committee, Asia Human Rights Commission, National Lawyers Guild, Reporters Without Borders, and other groups have protested the warrantless arrests, kidnappings or forced "disappearances," and extrajudicial killings of over 700 Filipinos since 2001. The Tasaday 5 illustrates the daily repression inflicted on activists working for justice and human dignity. U.S. citizens should demand a halt to their tax dollars given by Bush--tax dollars being wasted on military aid to the brutal Arroyo military used to suppress the civil liberties of women, workers, peasants, professionals, indigenous communities, and other citizens. Stop Arroyo/Bush State terrorism!

4peace,

Update on the AFP Military Rebels
AJLPP-USA (Alliance-Philippines),

For the people’s democratic forces, it is just plain killings, disappearances or torture in jail.

For military rebels, it’s a different kind of torture. News sources revealed today that the combination of “solitary confinement, intrigues, unsolicited acts of kindness, and even continuous blaring of [heavy] metal music” has taken a toll on the detained Magdalo rebel soldiers, according to the former legal counsel of one of them.

Deport Bolante Back to the Philippines
AJLPP-USA,

San Francisco -The Alliance for a Just and Lasting Peace in the Philippines (AJLPP-USA) scores the hypocrisy of the US Ambassador Kinney’s announcement that the US government “would be helping the Philippine government to fight corruption.” We believe that if the US government is serious in its campaign against corruption, it should start revealing details of why Arroyo’s former agriculture undersecretary Jocelyn "Jocjoc" Bolante who was taken into custody in the United States and is now applying for asylum in the United States is not being deported back to the Philippines.

On Iraq, Lieberman, McCain, Perle, and Hoffa
NonNeocon,

Senators Joe Lieberman and John McCain aren't merely "hawksih"; as "Honorary Co-Chairmen" of a pre-Iraq-war spin machine called The Committee for the Liberation of Iraq, they were leading cheerleaders for a war that now threatens to mushroom out of all control--unless we remove the Liebermans, McCains, and their fellow war cheerleaders from our U.S. Congress.

Global Protests Slam G8 Pollution of Climate
Rising Tide North America,

The protests included large "banner drops" in multiple cities, protests of coal and oil companies, and rallies at the U.S. embassy in London and the Washington, DC home of U.S. Secretary of Energy Samuel Bodman. On Friday, protestors showed up at Bodman's home, demanding that the United States and the G8 abandon the focus on nuclear, coal, and on oil wars as "energy security." Anti-G8 Protest Successful in Russia
author: LINK/Berlin anti-G8 Press Group,

Despite the fact that as many as 200 potential anti-G8 protesters have been already arrested just before the arrival of President Bush in Russia, activists yesterday successfully organised a large carnival protest in Moscow without a single person being detained. However, illegal harrassment and detention of people remains a large civil rights problem.

Cop Crackdown On the Eve of G8 in Russia
repost from email,

moscow anti-g8 action july 11 Russia is on the verge of the G8 summit which is to be hosted in Saint Petersburg.

The activists belonging to different political and grass root organizations and groups scattered all over Russia are coming to Saint Petersburg to participate in the alternative "summit". These persons are being harassed and persecuted by the local police and security services agents on their way to Saint Petersburg.

Up to this date at least 100 people have been detained under various pretexts having no legal force. People are forcefully deprived of their documents, transportation tickets, stalked by unknown individuals and then once again arrested by police on the pretext of protecting their personal safety (!). On different occasions people have brutally been mishandled by police and secret service agents.

We are appealing to all people in the Western countries and asking them to voice their solidarity with the Russian political and social activists at this critical moment on the eve of the G-8 summit. We suggest that you picket the Russian embassies and consulates.

For more info about anti-g8 actions in russia, see
 http://int.ru.indymedia.org/

UPDATE:
Despite the fact that as many as 200 potential anti-G8 protesters have been already arrested just before the arrival of Bush in Russia, activists yesterday successfully organised a large carnival protest in Moscow without a single person being detained. "Russian citizens desperately need international help. The government, police and the justice system are only oppressing popular dissent. We urge people to put pressure on the Russian embassy wherever they live." The police have today cancelled the one previously permitted demonstration against the G8, making all public dissent now officially illegal.

Film Screening: Juarez Femicides -- July 26th
sdimc,

Juarez Mothers FILM SCREENING:
On the Edge: The Juarez Femicides by Steev Hise
The Mothers of Juarez by Zulma Aguiar
Discussion with Steev Hise
Wed July 26 6:30 p.m.
Bard Hall, First Unitarian Universalist Church
4190 Front St. Hillcrest
$5 Donation Proceeds to Nuestras Hijas de Regreso A Casa (May Our Daughters Return Home) and SDIMC.

For more than a decade, the cities of Chihuahua and Juarez, near the US-Mexico border, have been killing fields for young women, the site of over 400 unsolved femicides. Despite the horrific nature of these crimes, authorities at all levels exhibit indifference, and there is strong evidence that some officials may be involved. Impunity and corruption has permitted the criminals, whoever they are, to continue committing these acts, knowing there will be no consequences.
Small advances in the struggle for justice are due to the perseverance of victims' families who cannot be silenced despite the efforts of state and federal authorities to keep them quiet. Campaigns by local, national and international non-governmental organizations are also important. Often grassroots groups work in a climate of threats and defamation by government officials for making one simple demand - STOP THE FEMICIDE!

Rather than provide an easy, murder-mystery style solution to the crimes, On The Edge sets out to explain the social, cultural, and economic factors that have created this situation where the killings can continue, and continue to go unpunished.
