Marjorie Cohn Speaks on Bush's Legal Abuses
Mark Gabrish Conlan/Zenger’s Newsmagazine,

Marjorie Cohn National Lawyers' Guild president and Thomas Jefferson School of Law professor Marjorie Cohn gave a talk to Progressive Democrats of San Diego July 19 on the long train of legal abuses and usurpations perpetrated by the Bush administration, from lying their way into Congressional and public approval for an illegal war against Iraq to torture, targeted assassinations and "extraordinary renditions" abroad, indiscriminate killings of civilians, surveillance at home and flouting the authority of Congress.

Black Thursday
Mark Gabrish Conlan/Zenger’s Newsmagazine,

Two things that happened on Thursday, June 28 were so dire in their portents for America’s political future that the day may well go down in history as “Black Thursday.” First, the U.S. Supreme Court threw out two attempts to integrate public schools in Seattle and Louisville on the ground that school districts can’t make race a factor in assigning children to schools even to undo the effects of over a century of past discrimination against students of color. Then, the U.S. Senate overwhelmingly killed a bad immigration “reform” bill because of organized political pressure from talk-radio hosts and other members of the rabid Right because it wasn’t punitive enough against so-called “illegal” immigrants. These events are a wake-up call to people still naïve enough to think the results of the 2006 election are the beginning of a progressive revival.

Convergence for Climate Action - August 8-14
Rising Tide North America,

Convergence for Climate Action - August 8-14 COME CO-CREATE AN ALTERNATIVE TO AN ENERGY-DEPENDENT WORLD!

Just under a month from now -- August 8-14th -- regional North American Convergences for Climate Action will bring hundreds of social justice and environmental activists together to fight the fossil fuel empire and create truly sustainable, bio-regionally appropriate and community-based responses to climate change. The events on the West Coast and in the Southeast are modeled after the inspiring 2006 Climate Camp in the UK, which will reemerge this year at Heathrow Airport from August 14th-21st.

Part networking and activist skills training, part community sustainability demonstration site, the Convergences aim to invigorate the Climate Movement by pulling together communities of resistance. We aim to inject an anti-oppression, justice-focused agenda, and to demonstrate examples of truly sustainable, less energy-intensive lives that don't depend on the oppression, thievery, and destruction attached to fossil fuel extraction.

Femicides in Guatemala
.,

As femicides continue in Juarez, Iraq and elsewhere, and corporate media ignores them, further reports of the pervasive nature of atrocities against women continue to accumulate. A report on femicides in Guatemala by Parenti and Munoz:

"While these murders may seem like little more than random thrill killings to some observers, in fact they serve a function of social control much as would any form of state terrorism. The violence perpetrated against individuals creates a pervasive climate of fear and horror within the victimized families and communities, thereby discouraging social protest and popular resistance. Instead of organizing around any number of crucial politico-economic issues, many of the demoralized and traumatized families cower in stunned silence." (Parenti and Munoz)

More than 15,000 Immigrants Marched in LA
Alliance for A Just and Lasting Peace (AJLPP),

More than 15,000 immigrants and advocates militantly but peacefully marched last Sunday, June 24 in Hollywood to express their sentiments on the ongoing immigrant rights bill in the U.S Congress.

Despite the oppressive heat and under the watchful eyes of hundreds of police and county deputies, the more than an hour immigrant rights march occupied more than six blocks from Sunset Street to the rally site at Highland Street in Los Angeles.

Although the march-rally was smaller than the earlier marches and rallies that saw police repression and threats of deportations, immigrants and their advocates marched in militant, peaceful and festive mood

Gracia Molina de Pick Speaks on Juárez
Mark Gabrish Conlan/Zenger’s Newsmagazine,

Gracia Molina de Pick Veteran local activist Gracia Molina de Pick and professor Ricardo Griswold del Castillo spoke to the San Diego Humanist Association June 17 about Benito Juárez, president of Mexico from 1859 to 1872 and a leader in the struggle for indigenous rights and a modern Mexico. Juárez fought the power of the Roman Catholic Church and was instrumental in drafting Mexico's progressive 1857 constitution, which guaranteed the separation of church and state. Molina de Pick also discussed her grandfather, Andrés Molina Esquivel, who wrote the first sympathetic Spanish-language biography of Juárez and also wrote "Los Grandes Problemas Nacionales," a 1909 exposé of the corruption of Mexico's dictator, Porfirio Díaz, which helped inspire the Mexican revolution the following year.

Why your revolution is no liberation!
MAD Cologne,

fight antisemitism During the recent weeks and months a spirited debate developed in different German left wing newspapers and groups about the sense or non-sense, the perspectives and the means and goals of the mobilisation against the G8 summit. Different German and Austrian anti-fascist groups started a campaign to criticise a wrong analysis of capitalism widely spread in the anti-globalisation movement. In the context of this campaign several public discussions and lectures were held, a special webpage was set up but above all reader was published that contains a set of basic texts referring to this problem. This reader is available in German and English and will soon also be published in French in order to spread the debate also across other countries. Check it out: www.no-liberation-reader.tk

Arab-American Teach-in Explores U.S. Policy
Mark Gabrish Conlan/Zenger’s Newsmagazine,

L to R: Babak Rahimi, Michael Provence, Nasser Barghouti Any resemblance between what the mainstream U.S. media say about American involvement in the Middle East and reality is, if not purely coincidental, at least far-fetched, said three speakers at a teach-in on Middle East issues May 31 at the Four Points Sheraton on Aero Drive. Sponsored by the American-Arab Anti-Discrimination Committee (ADC), the Alternate Focus public-access cable-TV program on Middle Eastern issues, the San Diego Coalition for Peace and Justice and the San Diego chapter of the National Lawyers’ Guild, the event showcased UCSD Iranian studies professor Babak Rahimi, UCSD history professor Michael Provence, and San Diego ADC president Nasser Barghouti, all of whom built their presentations around the contrast between what our media tell us about the Middle East and what’s really going on there.
