So-Called Mental Illness is Myth--new book!
anti-psychiatric liberation affront!,
This dialogue between the infamous (yet hardly known) Dr. Szasz and his critics allows him to once again articulate the argument he has presented so brilliantly and passionately for over four decades. . . . A profession that fails to learn from and respect those who confront it with controversial and discomforting ideas loses strength and vibrancy. Hopefully, at least some younger psychiatrists will be encouraged to read this book. They will find that their intellectual and professional lives will be enriched.

Tactical Escalation
tactical,
At the RNC, I noticed two conflicting trends, one hopeful and one disturbing.
At two separate events, fire was used as a tactic at the RNC protests. In both instances, organizers claimed that the people who had set the fires were undercover police and provocateurs. There was one trend, initiated by an unknown source to escalate confrontations, there was another to decry such escalation.

Venezuela: After the Referendum
El Libertario's editorial staff,
* The August 2004 elections legitimized Hugo Chávez's presidency, approved by the multinational powers-that-be, despite the opposition's claims of electoral fraud. We, at El Libertario (issue 39, September/October 2004), presented an indepth analysis of the consecuences of the referendum, as well as proposals for action in the new circumstances. We shall now quote a couple of notes from that issue that express the essence of the venezuelan anarchists' perspective.

The Feeling of Existence
Reinarto Hadipriono,
What actually is it that makes an object “feel” the presence of the other object when the two of them collide? Would it be possible for that object to “feel” the presence of the other object, if it were unable to “feel” its own presence? By what means then does it “feel” the presence of others? Take, for instance, that you are one of those who don’t believe that man has “the feeling of existence.” The question now is: “How then do you come to have the feeling that you are ‘always present’ and that you are always at the present?” Obviously, the feeling meant here is one that has nothing to do at all with your sensory feelings and neither does it have anything to do at all with your emotional feelings.

World emergency; lack of sanitation
posted by Mark Gabrish Conlan,
A chilling report of just how many people in this world are likely to die from lack of access to clean water and/or basic sanitation. And how is the capitalist system responding? With schemes to privatize water and to redefine the diseases caused by malnutrition and filth as "HIV/AIDS" and mount enormous corporate-welfare campaigns to pay billions to the big pharmaceutical companies for toxic "antivirals" when what's really needed are clean water and basic antibiotics.

Lou Dobbs, Radical Populist
Lou Dobbs and Bill Moyers,
Who'd-a thunk it? Lou Dobbs, commonly regarded as a partisan, hyper-capitalist Republican financial commentator on CNN, goes on PBS's NOW WITH BILL MOYERS August 20 and says things about multinational corporations, exporting jobs, corporate power over American politics and media, and the dismal future of America's middle class you'd expect to hear from an anarchist at an anti-globalization rally. We'll sure miss NOW when it gets cut to half an hour next year due to pressure from Right-wing corporate funders and the Bush administration.

U.S. Poor, Uninsured Increase
Los Angeles Times Web site,
The U.S. Census Bureau just released its annual report which revealed that the numbers of poor and uninsured people in the U.S. is steadily increasing. Median income is remaining the same while expenses are rising. This report is usually issued in September but Democrats are accusing the Bush administration of pushing it up so it's less of a factor in the election.

The People Win in Venezuela
posted by Mark Gabrish Conlan,
Venezuela's populist president, Hugo Chavez survived an attempted recall August 15 with 58 percent of the vote, according to official tallies confirmed by Organization of American States (OAS) observers. Note to Gray Davis: Chavez proves that you CAN survive a recall if there are enough people in your electorate who believe you stand for something more than just getting your next contribution check from a corporate fat cat.

ANARCHISM IN TURKEY - 2004
Batur Ozdinc,
Eighteen years have passed over since the publication of the first Turkish anarchist periodical “Kara” (Black) in 1986. In Turkey anarchist movement is enjoying its “youth years” now, a bit confused up what to concentrate on and how to organize better but day by day growing and becoming more effective. Lately, before and during anti-NATO protests against NATO summit which was held in Istanbul at the end of June, anarchists started mobilizing months before and it was the most active movement we have involved till now.
