Supremes Won't Stop Queer Marriage in MA
posted by Mark Gabrish Conlan,
The U.S. Supreme Court on May 14 refused to delay the issuance of marriage licenses by the state of Massachusetts to same-sex couples. Here's how the mainstream media reported the decision and the ongoing debate over same-sex marriage, including the bizarre contention of opponents that somehow their opposite-sex marriages are weakened or jeopardized by the government's sanction to loving Gay and Lesbian people in equally committed relationships.

OTC Emergency Contraception Rejected by FDA
Kate A.,
Outrageously, after more than one million of us Marched for Women’s
Lives in Washington, DC, the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) late
Thursday decided to reject over-the-counter status for emergency
contraception. We must now make our voices heard once again
expressing our anger that the FDA has allowed right-wing politics to
trump women’s health.

Marriage Equality in Spain!
posted by Mark Gabrish Conlan,
As if he hadn't pissed off Bush enough by pulling his country's troops from the coalition of the no-longer-willing in Iraq, Spanish prime minister Jose Luis Rodriguez Zapatero has announced plan to legally recognize same-sex marriages. From the Netherlands this wasn't a big surprise, but SPAIN? Just goes to show what you can accomplish once you get rid of a religious dictatorship ...

Was Artist Jessica Lawless Censored?
Mark Gabrish Conlan/Zenger's Newsmagazine,
Was Queer artist Jessica Lawless censored when her three pieces, "Blue Things I Wear" — one of which depicted a dildo — were removed from an art show at the University of San Diego last February? An on-campus forum held to discuss that highlighted not only the expected issue of artistic freedom but also the limitations on Queer activists on a Roman Catholic campus and the fear they work under than their groups can be shut down at any time by administrative fiat.

Same-Sex Marriage Forum at Malcolm X Library
Mark Gabrish Conlan/Zenger's Newsmagazine,
A coalition of Queer community groups in association with the local chapters of the NAACP and ACLU held a community forum March 29 at the Malcolm X Library to discuss whether the U.S. Constitution should be amended to ban same-sex marriage. Four of the five panelists opposed the proposed Amendment as a constitutional sanction of discrimination that could be used later as a precedent against people of color and other oppressed groups.

NTAC Media,
Recently, one of Scott Bloch’s first acts as newly appointed Special Counsel to the White House was to instill fear in ‘homosexual’ employees of the federal government. In an increasingly common curtailment of individual rights, the Bush Administration has removed decades-long protections from employment discrimination against those who serve our nation.

Same-Sex Marriage Rally Article, 3/18/04
Mark Gabrish Conlan,
Over 100 people attended a rally outside the San Diego County Administration Center downtown on March 18 to call for California to recognize marriages between same-sex partners as legal, despite only two days’ notice and a near-exclusive reliance on e-mail to publicize the event. Their primary demand was for action at the state level: specifically passage of a bill called the Marriage License Nondiscrimination Act, which would make marriage “gender-neutral” and available equally to same-sex and opposite-sex couples.

Jeffrey Mittman: Equality & Same-Sex Marriage
Mark Gabrish Conlan/Zenger's Newsmagazine,
The statewide Queer lobbying organization Equality California [EQCA] — which until recently was called California Association for Pride and Equality [CAPE] and before that was the Lobby for Individual Freedom and Equality [LIFE] — has sent Bay Area attorney Jeffrey Mittman to San Diego as the first official in any California statewide Queer organization to be based here. What’s more, EQCA has chosen San Diego to be the pilot city in an ambitious electoral outreach program called the California Voter Project. Zenger’s interviewed Mittman on March 17 and mostly discussed the same-sex marriage issue.

Queer Film Opens at Landmark Hillcrest 3/12
Mark Gabrish Conlan/Zenger's Newsmagazine,
It’s really just your ordinary fish-out-of-water, unlikely-romance movie — ruthless Gay sexual predator Christian (Wes Ramsey) sets his sights on Aaron Davis (Steve Sandvoss), Mormon missionary who has been dropped into another unit of his West Hollywood apartment complex, and grabs the brass ring of Aaron’s body but gets far more than he bargained for in the process — but Latter Days, written and directed by Sweet Home Alabama screenwriter C. Jay Cox, manages to transcend the clichés through a suprisingly deep portrayal of the central characters’ emotional pain.
