Over 250 Attend Marriage Equality Rally
Mark Gabrish Conlan,

Over 250 San Diegans turned out Thursday evening, August 12, for a rally and march at the Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transgender Community Center to protest that day’s ruling by the California Supreme Court invalidating over 4,000 marriages between same-sex couples in San Francisco. The court ruled unanimously that San Francisco Mayor Gavin Newsom had exceeded his authority by ordering city staff to issue marriage licenses to same-sex couples between February 12 and March 12 of this year.

Today's OTHER Gay Rights Defeat
Kynn Bartlett, Inland Anti-Empire,

The Murrieta school board voted, 3-2, to reject a proposed policy banning bullying and harassment of students "respect to ethnic group, religion, gender, sexual orientation, color, race, national origin and physical or mental disability or the perception of one or more of such characteristics." Ironically, the real danger here will not actually be borne primarily by the gay, lesbian, bisexual, and transgendered teenagers who are so despised by these Christian [sic] zealots. There are far, far more black, Latino, Asian, Native, Jewish, Muslim, atheist, Buddhist, Mormon, immigrant, and disabled kids in the Murrieta school district than there are LGBT children, and ALL of those kids are at risk from a school board which is willing to condone harassment as long as some of that harassment is directed at gays.

AIDS Trade Show
Mark Gabrish Conlan,

The recently concluded AIDS conference in Bangkok, Thailand was yet another pharmaceutical industry trade show, devoted to pushing the highly expensive, insanely toxic so-called "life-saving" anti-HIV medications onto Third World countries even as the lack of any real scientific progress only underlined the bankruptcy of the chemotherapeutic approach to AIDS treatment.

Stand Up, DO SOMETHING !!
Christopher R. Stanley,

Hello,

My name is Christopher Stanley. I am sure that in the past few days, like myself, you have been glued to TV because of the gay rights issues we are having of gay marriage. Let me start by saying that I am a 20 year old male, Originally from San Diego, when I was 14 years of age I use to attend a common ground meeting ( youth group) at the center when it was on Normal Street, Since then, I have pulled away from what I thought was my home (the gay community). In the past I have been to many political rallies and fought for many different things in OC for human rights.

Globalization vs. AIDS Treatment
posted by Mark Gabrish Conlan,

The latest news from the international AIDS conference in Bangkok, Thailand is about the clash between global pharmaceutical companies seeking to maintain their patents — and resulting ultra-high monopoly prices — on anti-HIV medications and governments in less-developed countries seeking to produce cheaper generic versions of the drugs. While my own view remains that much of what is called "AIDS" in the Third World is actually old, endemic infectious disease like tuberculosis and malaria, the attempt of the multinational drug companies to protect their patents no matter what bodes ill for the less-developed world's future access to health care in general and ALL prescription drugs in particular.

Queer Democrats Debate Strong-Mayor Charter
Mark Gabrish Conlan/Zenger's Newsmagazine,

Mike Aguirre San Diego's voters will decide November 2 whether to conduct a five-year trial of a radical new form of city government that will make the Mayor, not a hired city manager, the city's chief administrative officer. The San Diego Democratic Club debated the change June 24 and was skeptical about the claims of more "accountability" under a strong Mayor and the political motives of the proponents, as well as the secrecy with which the proposal was drafted.

Reagan's Dark Legacy
Mark Gabrish Conlan/Zenger's Newsmagazine,

Despite the near-deification in the official tributes to Ronald Reagan, his legacy on virtually every significant issue of his presidency — the economy, the environment, women's reproductive rights, Queer rights, labor rights, crony capitalism and U.S. financial and logistical support for international terrorism — was a disaster for the country. Reagan deserves to rot in hell for all eternity.

Queer Democrats Endorse Jackson/School Board
Mark Gabrish Conlan/Zenger's Newsmagazine,

Sheila Jackson In a surprisingly contentious 2 1/2-hour meeting, the predominantly Queer San Diego Democratic Club endorsed Sheila Jackson over Sharon Whitehurst-Payne in the citywide runoff election for the San Diego Unified School District board seat in District “E.” However, the club was unable to come to an endorsement decision in District “D,” though it rated one of the candidates, Benjamin Hueso, “acceptable.”

Queer theory and violence against women
Sisyphe,

I want to talk about how queer and ‘postmodern’ theory has affected the ability of feminists and lesbians to organise against, or even to recognise violence against women. In queer and postmodern theory, based on liberal individualism, important forms of violence are renamed ‘transgression’, ‘choice’ or ‘agency’. I shall concentrate on 3 forms of violence here, men’s prostitution abuse of women, the violence of transsexual operations, and the violence of the ‘body modification’ industry.

Unprecedented Week of Transgender Activism in
NTAC Media,

Group shot of NTAC lobbyists before hitting Capitol Hill. A bit of history occurred the end of April and early May. Three national transgender or gender-diverse civil rights organizations lobbied Capitol Hill simultaneously and, for the first time, all lobbied for the same issues. In addition, yet another rejuvenated national group conducted its first organized protest in years, and still another organization conducted a march to the Viet Nam Veterans’ Memorial, and conducted a historic wreath laying ceremony.
