ARGENTINA - Encontremos a Marita...

Kushner's Play "Bright Room" All Too Timely
Mark Gabrish Conlan/Zenger's Newsmagazine,
Though written in 1987, Tony Kushner's play "A Bright Room Called Day" — the work of a playwright who is "out" both as a Gay man and as a socialist — seems all too timely in the era of George Bush II and American imperialism's push for world domination. Its subject is the paralysis and fatal divisiveness within the German Left in 1932, just before Adolf Hitler and the Nazis took power, and the political and personal dilemmas Kushner dramatizes so effectively in his script are those American Leftists are likely to face as the U.S. becomes increasingly imperialist and fascist. The play runs at Diversionary Theatre, 4545 Park Boulevard, through December 4.

The predominantly Queer San Diego Democratic Club endorsed two Latina candidates for San Diego City Council in the open seats in Districts 2 and 8 in the November 8 special election. The club picked Remy Bermúdez for District 8 at their regular meeting September 22 and upgraded their previous "acceptable" rating for District 2 candidate Lorena Gonzalez to a full endorsement.

Breaking Border Paradigms
Bob Alba w/sdimc,
Calexico had many successes Saturday and early Sunday morning. According to the public and most major news sources, the human rights protestors have effectively shut down or delayed the Friends of the Border Patrol (FBP) from inaugurating their fall vigilante watch. Here are some pictures from one of the insipiring parts of the day as we broke down Border paradigms.

A Call For Solidarity
David Agranoff,
David mailed me this statement asking for solidarity and asked that I post it on IndyMedia. There are only a few spelling errors/typos in David's letter because he had to write this in a bit of a hurry, but I will try to make them coherent while keeping as much of David's writing in it's original form as possible. Hopefully I don't add my own typos as I type this out.

The predominantly Queer San Diego Democratic Club was unable to agree on a candidate to endorse in the special election for City Council District 2. Lorena Gonzalez, the only person of color among the major candidates, came within one vote of the 60 percent needed for the club's endorsement and was ultimately the only candidate rated acceptable by the members.

“Lavender and Red”: Leslie Feinberg Speaks
Mark Gabrish Conlan/Zenger’s Newsmagazine,
Transgender Lesbian activist and author Leslie Feinberg spoke at the International Action Center in San Diego July 17 and discussed her series "Lavender and Red," published in "Workers' World" newspaper. She argued that not only does the U.S. need a socialist revolution but that racism, sexism, anti-Queer prejudices and all other forms of oppression need to be dealt with now, not "after the revolution," to build the unity needed to win. Feinberg also discussed the so-called "REAL ID Act" and how it will hurt Transgender people and women who've fled abusive relationships, as well as the undocumented immigrants it deliberately targeted.

Queer Demos Discuss Religion and Politics
Mark Gabrish Conlan.Zenger’s Newsmagazine,
The July 23 meeting of the predominantly Queer San Diego Democratic Club featured Rabbi Leonard Rosenthal of San Marcos and self-styled “progressive Catholic” activist Ronni Friedman Barone, along with a Queer Muslim representative who requested anonymity, discussing the dynamite topic of religion and its influence on American politics. Rosenthal argued that the church should stay out of politics rather than take stands that polarize practitioners, while Barone said that like it or not, Americans overwhelmingly believe in God and expect their politicians to profess strong faith, and only people who come from strong faith backgrounds themselves can reach out to voters inclined to the religious Right.

“For Reasons That Remain Unclear”
Mark Gabrish Conlan/Zenger’s Newsmagazine,
Playwright Mart Crowley is known almost exclusively for his pioneering Gay play, “The Boys in the Band,” from 1968, but he’s written better works since, including “For Reasons That Remain Unclear,” playing through July 24 at 6th @ Penn Theatre, 3704 Sixth Avenue in Hillcrest. A tightly knit 90-minute drama about two Americans who meet in Rome and explore each other’s sordid pasts, “Reasons” contains a surprise twist and builds to an intense climax, and the well-acted 6th @ Penn production makes an excellent case for Crowley’s script.

Mayor’s Race: To 9 or Not to 9?
Mark Gabrish Conlan/Zenger’s Newsmagazine,
To 9 or not to 9 — as in Chapter 9, the part of the federal bankruptcy code that covers local governments — was the big topic at a forum for San Diego mayoral candidates June 17. Though the forum's location was the Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transgender Community Center in Hillcrest and the sponsors were Queer organizations — the Community Leadership Forum and the Gay & Lesbian Times — Queer issues barely came up in a forum that focused mostly on the city's pension crisis and whether or not to “9.”

Yes, There IS Queer Sex in the Military
Mark Gabrish Conlan/Zenger's Newsmagazine,
Two authors on Queers in the military spoke June 12 at Obelisk Bookstore in Hillcrest. Rich Merritt, author of “Secrets of a Gay Marine Porn Star,” described growing up in Greeneville, South Carolina; attending Bob Jones schools until his second year in college; joining the Marines after his expulsion; doing porn videos with a San Diego company while still on active duty; leaving the service and falling into a drug habit before cleaning up, finishing law school and becoming an attorney. Alex Buchman promoted his two books, “A Night in the Barracks” and “Barracks Bad Boys,” describing real-life accounts of Gay sex involving servicemembers.

Queer Democrats Endorse Frye for Mayor
Mark Gabrish Conlan/Zenger's Newsmagazine,
The predominantly Queer San Diego Democratic Club overwhelmingly endorsed City Councilmember Donna Frye for mayor in the July 26 special election to replace Dick Murphy, whose resignation from the mayor’s office takes effect July 15. Despite concerns raised by Gay & Lesbian Times publisher Michael Portantino — who appeared at the meeting and claimed that a handful of Queer Democrats, including some club members, had held a private meeting aimed at recruiting another major Democrat to run — Frye won the votes of 54 of the 58 club members present.

Queer Community Warned about Crystal
Mark Gabrish Conlan/Zenger’s Newsmagazine,
Psychotherapist Neva Chauppette, Psy.D., spoke to an audience of about 150 at the Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transgender Community Center Monday evening, May 23 about the dangers of methamphetamine use and its potential threat to the Queer community, Gay men in particular. Though the title of her presentation was “Methamphetamine Use: Reasons, Risks and Practical Interventions,” a good part of her talk also condemned the sexual culture of Gay men — particularly the heavy emphasis on casual sexual contacts made in bars, at circuit parties, on Gay cruises or via the Internet — and accused Gay male meth users of jeopardizing the respectability Lesbians in particular have worked to win for the Queer community.
