Lou Dobbs, Radical Populist
Lou Dobbs and Bill Moyers,
Who'd-a thunk it? Lou Dobbs, commonly regarded as a partisan, hyper-capitalist Republican financial commentator on CNN, goes on PBS's NOW WITH BILL MOYERS August 20 and says things about multinational corporations, exporting jobs, corporate power over American politics and media, and the dismal future of America's middle class you'd expect to hear from an anarchist at an anti-globalization rally. We'll sure miss NOW when it gets cut to half an hour next year due to pressure from Right-wing corporate funders and the Bush administration.

U.S. Poor, Uninsured Increase
Los Angeles Times Web site,
The U.S. Census Bureau just released its annual report which revealed that the numbers of poor and uninsured people in the U.S. is steadily increasing. Median income is remaining the same while expenses are rising. This report is usually issued in September but Democrats are accusing the Bush administration of pushing it up so it's less of a factor in the election.

Pat Washington Support Committee Meets
Mark Gabrish Conlan/Zenger's Newsmagazine,
The support committee for Dr. Pat Washington, former women's studies professor at SDSU who's been engaged in a three-year legal battle to get her job back, held a teach-in at Springfield College August 24. The event showed both the wide range of community support she enjoys inher struggle and the dramatic obstacles she still faces — including having to find new lawyers since her previous ones quit the case when she wouldn't agree to a settlement that would pay her money but end her chances of reinstatement.

Jim Hightower Draws 600 in San Diego
Mark Gabrish Conlan/Zenger's Newsmagazine,
Progressive author and organizer Jim Hightower spoke to a standing-room-only audience at the First Unitarian-Universalist Church in Hillcrest Friday, August 20. Hightower’s message was that progressives and populists must do all they can in this election campaign to make sure Democrat John Kerry beats George W. Bush and becomes President — but that’s only the beginning, not the end, of the task. “Beating Bush is not a progressive victory; it just brings us to ground level,” he said. “The day after the election we’re going to have to be in the face of the Kerry-Edwards administration to make them as progressive as we can,” he said.

The People Win in Venezuela
posted by Mark Gabrish Conlan,
Venezuela's populist president, Hugo Chavez survived an attempted recall August 15 with 58 percent of the vote, according to official tallies confirmed by Organization of American States (OAS) observers. Note to Gray Davis: Chavez proves that you CAN survive a recall if there are enough people in your electorate who believe you stand for something more than just getting your next contribution check from a corporate fat cat.

Teamsters Strike at Coca-Cola, Intl Day of Action against Coke
PR Newswire and FSRN c/o lotus,
Teamsters in San Diego, California, who produce and distribute Coca-Cola products for Coca-Cola Enterprises went on strike today to protest the company's demand to dramatically increase workers' health care costs."Coke's greed has put nearly 500 San Diego families in jeopardy," said Jack Cipriani, International Vice President and Director of the Teamsters Brewery & Soft Drink Workers' Conference. "It is unconscionable that Coke would turn on the very people who work so hard to make the company the number one selling soft drink brand in the United States. Paying for those health benefits would have cost CCE less than what the company earned in 17 minutes last year."
The World Social Forum declared tomorrow, the 22nd of July, as an International Day of Action against Coca Cola. Organizers are encouraging schools and organizations to stop stocking coke machines and are asking individuals to refrain from buying Coca Cola products. In the US the campaign to boycott ‘Killer Coke’ is spreading across college campuses and communities around the country. The boycott was launched last year by the Colombian food and beverage workers’ union, SINALTRAINAL, to bring attention to the murders of Coca-Cola trade unionists there that they believe were executed by company-hired death squads in a country often described as the world’s most dangerous place for labor activists.

SEIU Convention Offers Same Old Policies
Richard Mellor,
To Many young activists, SEIU is considered the progressive Union. But, in the last analysis, the policies of SEIU's leadership are no different from those of any other AFL-CIO Union. They fail to take on the employers in a serious way and refuse to break politically with the Democratic Party.

Reagan on the Ten-Spot? Not!
Mark Drolette,
A move is afoot to supplant Alexander Hamilton’s image on the very currency he helped strengthen with that of a recently-departed president whose main political achievement was establishing style over substance. Queer Democrats Debate Strong-Mayor Charter
Mark Gabrish Conlan/Zenger's Newsmagazine,
San Diego's voters will decide November 2 whether to conduct a five-year trial of a radical new form of city government that will make the Mayor, not a hired city manager, the city's chief administrative officer. The San Diego Democratic Club debated the change June 24 and was skeptical about the claims of more "accountability" under a strong Mayor and the political motives of the proponents, as well as the secrecy with which the proposal was drafted.

Reagan's Dark Legacy
Mark Gabrish Conlan/Zenger's Newsmagazine,
Despite the near-deification in the official tributes to Ronald Reagan, his legacy on virtually every significant issue of his presidency — the economy, the environment, women's reproductive rights, Queer rights, labor rights, crony capitalism and U.S. financial and logistical support for international terrorism — was a disaster for the country. Reagan deserves to rot in hell for all eternity.

Queer Democrats Endorse Jackson/School Board
