Tijuana Workers Celebrate May 1st With Rally
Rocky Neptun,

Earth Day Sponsored by Starbucks!??! While San Diego's upscale progressive community, from feely-goody new age yuppies and aging hippies to the power liberals who run the pitiful left-wing response to Bushism in San Diego, flocked to the corporate sponsored Earth Day festival, May 1st; others, workers around the world, refused to give up the their traditional day to celebrate the world's
laborers.

Debtors of the World, Unite!
Yoshie Furuhashi,

The "bankruptcy reform" bill "passed the House on a 302-126 vote on Thursday, a month after the Senate voted 74-25." It is time for the American wing of the global justice movement, which has been struggling to force the International Monetary Fund and the World Bank to drop the debt under which peasants and workers of the global South groan, to take on the finance and credit industry that oppresses US workers by usury.

Service, Technical Workers Strike at UCSD
lotus at indymedia d0t org,

AFSCME went on stike today at UCSD and at all UC Campuses Across the state. UPTE, UAW came out to the support rallies. UPTE's contract says that they are entitled to strike in support, so as to not cross the picket lines. Many UAW teaching assistants are not working today. Some professors have cancelled their classes today. Some UPTE workers did not go to work as well.

The UCSD administration sent out a threatening email saying that the strike is illegal and that UPTE can't strike. Some workers were intimidated by this email and they did go to work. The AFSCME strike is for a 24 hour period. The university tried to find scab worker replacements for the day, but they were having trouble getting people to do that.

Service workers are janitorial, bus drivers, and many others.

Campus spending hundreds of millions of dollars uc wide. but they refuse 5% raise.

About 1000 workers on strike at ucsd. about 300 people at 4pm solidarity rally. Students spoke about how they appreciate the work being done by the service workers and how they feel in solidarity with them. union reps spoke at the rally as well.

People are upbeat about the strike having an effect on the negotiations. They want to send a message to the administrators that they're going to do what it takes to get a living wage. People are marching down one of the major streets in UCSD. Energy level is high. There are about 300 people there.

Corporate media presence is very light. Up to 6 officers were seen at campus rally, close to attendees.

San Diego Passes Living Wage Law, 5-4
Mark Gabrish Conlan/Zenger's Newsmagazine,

After organizing for nearly three years, supporters of a Living Wage Ordinance (LWO) in San Diego finally got the City Council to go along by a 5-4 vote after a six-hour hearing April 12. The ordinance will require that private contractors pay workers on city contracts at least $10 per hour if they also provide health benefits, or $12 an hour if they don't. As a compromise, supporters agreed to phase in the implementation of the ordinance over the next three years to give the city a chance to recover from its current financial crises first — but that didn't satisfy either the Council opponents or the speakers against it, many of whom relied on Libertarian arguments about the sanctity of the "free market."

Living Wage Ordinance to be decided on Tuesday
Interfaith Committee for Worker Justice c/o sd indymedia,

Joel Ramos from the Center on Policy Initiatives, a labor-funded think tank that studies San Diego’s low-wage workforce and makes recommendations for changes, announced to the San Diego Democratic Club March 24 that the San Diego City Council will finally hear the Living Wage Ordinance on Tuesday, April 12 at 2 p.m. — a rally at 12:30 in the Community Concourse, 202 “C” Street downtown, will precede the hearing — thanks to a discharge petition signed by four City Councilmembers (Michael Zucchet, Toni Atkins, Anthony Young and Donna Frye) after Mayor Dick Murphy, an outspoken opponent of the ordinance, refused to put it on the Council’s agenda.

Background Story on the Living Wage Ordinance

The Living Wage Ordinance will be heard by the San Diego City Council on Tuesday, April 12th at 2 p.m. in City Council Chambers (unless we are moved to a larger room because there are so many of us). We will begin the event with a Rally at Civic Center Plaza at 12:30 p.m.
